This is why that crack about the mining drill to Mensah lands so hard -- "We're not used to violence," oh, unless you're killing SecUnits, and THEN....

The thing that really got me in episode 7 of murderbot is that the hostile unit used it's buffer/canned lines when it attacked. I think this hints that these secunits that are attacking them are people who are trapped in service to the corporations rim just like murderbot was. Which, yeah, obvious to us. But to presaux, who say all the right things but still have deep rooted biases against secunits (example: cheering when they killed hostile secunit at deltfall but moralizing and shying away from murderbot for killing leebeebee). It shows how even well-intentioned people can still be prejudiced, especially when they have never been around someone who challenges those preconceptions. I think Mensah and murderbot's relationship is a good example of how it isn't murderbot's responsibility to teach presaux to be better. It is their responsibility to do the work of dismantling their prejudice. Mensah is doing the work. She is a good leader. I adore her. The line about having to reckon with attacking that unit at deltfall was so fucking good. It really shows that Mensah truly sees murderbot and other units as people, or is at least beginning to internalize that they are. I love this show.

See also Fanny Price in Mansfield Park. She's pious, timid, unable to stand up for herself, not nearly as attractive as the Crawfords (the villains of the book), and yet also caring, careful, thoughtful, and moral in the best sense of that word. Her main flaw is loving Edward, at least IMO. But being who she is, she couldn't have loved Henry Crawford, which is the ending I always want.

nah cause the fact that jane austen wrote a character like emma woodhouse is still insane to me. she threw all the standards out the window and was like hey, here’s this incredibly complex and nuanced character, she’s selfish, privileged, manipulative and arrogant, but she’s also really fucking kind, she would do anything for those she loves (including sacrificing a lot of her liberties), she is able to admit that she’s made a mistake and grow from it, because those things are not mutually exclusive. and i think the reason why everyone is trying to girlbossify their heroines to make them like lizzie bennet (which is an insult to her character but that’s another story) is because they’re scared to write characters like emma. which is understandable, because she’s unlikeable-ish, and they don’t want to take that risk.

honestly the way jane wrote emma is IMPECCABLE and not everyone can pull it off, but i wish female characters with actual flaws were more popular.

murderbot had no business being this adorable in the last episode

In Murderbot’s head trauma hallucinations Dr Mensah takes the place of Captain Hossein. It might not consciously think it, but obviously subconsciously it considers Mensah to be a real-world equivalent.

And, while it’s in a standard crew uniform (not even a special one), it’s being asked to provide navigation for the ship. Which it doesn’t know how to do. All it can offer is to stay behind and distract the ‘raiders’. Even in its’ dreams all it knows how to do is sacrifice itself and die. As an analogue for the real world action… Stab me in the heart.

Because society views us as monsters. And when you’re viewed that way you have two options.

The first, you can break yourself. You can take a knife and carve off all the corners, take sandpaper and smooth all your rough edges, you can take everything remotely variant about you and you can try and obliterate it in order to make yourself acceptable to people who do not know you and never will.

The second option is that you can say “okay, if I’m a monster I’m going to enjoy being a monster. I’m going to take those rough edges and rough them up some more. I’m going to take all my sharp corners and make them knife edged. I’m going to embrace how weird and broken and fucked up I am and I’m going to make it a part of me. I’m going to love, fight, live, and die as a freak, but I’m going to do it on my terms and no one else’s”

I’m never going to be cis. I’m never going to be straight. In fact I’d rather die than be either of those. So I’m going to take what I am and make it my power instead of my shame.
