thinking about how in dragon games apple refers to her and raven’s story as “our” happily ever after. i truly think she believed that. i think in her mind the point of their story was to bind them together, to seal their fate as each other’s soulmates — raven is my happy ending, so i must be hers. apple never saw what raven saw in the mirror. i think apple always thought once she woke up she and raven would go back to being friends, and it would be their happy ending because they were both still here, and they were together, and all of the bad stuff had already happened, so they were all right. anyway. rapple should’ve been endgame.

Haikara Character Profiles

Thanks for watching the Haikara stream. There's so much new info, it's going to be split over multiple posts... (Please also forgive any mistakes that arise from this post, in particular.)

Before we begin:

Names are in English order with first name, then last name.

Romanisation not confirmed, as of this translation.

So we have:

Shinkurou Unzen, voiced by Taiga Takano. A 2nd year at Binan High School. He lives his life in the Kurotama dorm [1]. His favourite thing is "haikara". He likes new things, so when he takes in interest in something, he calls it "haikara", to the point the phrase has become meaningless. There are times where he kind of can't read the atmosphere, too. He's childhood friends with Domeki the student council president, who he calls "Su-san".

[T/N 1: It is unknown at the time of translation whether there is a single dorm or many dorms.]

Narushi Sukayu, voiced by Ryuuho Nagaoka. Binan High 3rd year. He lives his life in the Kurotama dorm [1]. He likes beautiful things. A super narcissist, where among beautiful things, he himself can be called the most beautiful thing of all. Every month on the 27th, he participates in the Binanshi Contest at school as the consecutive winner. It seems he also has a lot of fans, but...

Sousuke Unohana, voiced by Noriaki Kanze. Binan High 3rd year. He lives his life in the Kurotama dorm [1]. Cooking, laundry, sewing - he's the guy who can do anything household-related. He holds a mother-like position to everyone in the Kurotama dorm [1]. There are times when you seemingly can't tell what he is thinking, his emotions don't show on his face and he is terrifying...?

Ushio Oshamanbe, voiced by Takahiro Koike. Binan High 1st year. He lives his life in the Kurotama dorm [1]. At any rate, a big eater. He has an abnormal obsession with food. He's usually mild-mannered, but if he goes over his limit with how hungry he is, he'll suddenly become wild. When he's hungry, it seems he can see Aso's (Aso shares a room in the Kurotama dorm with him) leg as a daikon radish. He's worried he has no other especially strong points to his personality, aside from being a glutton...

Akuta Aso, voiced by Taichi Kusano (...yes, the same guy from Fairy Ranmaru). Binan High 1st year. He lives his life in the Kurotama dorm [1]. He's the kind of shitty brat who thinks he's the cutest of all. He likes teasing others. Actually, he comes from generations of ninjas. He's the younger brother of the Kurotama dorm [1], but at home, it seems he's a good older brother to his younger brother [2].

[T/N 2: At the time of translation, it is unknown how many younger brothers Akuta has.]

Nuru, voiced by Tomomichi Nishimura. A Pallas's cat (manul) who suddenly appeared in the bath at the Kurotama dorm. No matter where he [3] is, he'll slip into and out of those places [4]. It seems he came to save the earth from danger. He uses cat science to transform the Defence Club and to the very end, he takes no responsibility for their wellbeing for the sake of his own autonomy.

His favourite food is neko manma [5].

[T/N 3: The pronoun is unknown as of this translation, but presumably - as per the "there are no girls in Boueibu" rule and the male voice actor - this animal is a "he".]

[T/N 4: Wordplay - "manul" is manuru, "slip" in this case is nurutto.

[T/N 5: Could refer to 1) cat food or 2) a dish of rice and miso soup or bonito flakes.]

Straight Domeki [6], voiced by Tomoaki Maeno. Binan High 3rd year. Student council president. From a noted noble family, he is the legitimate heir to the Domeki title [7]. He was brought up strictly from a young age. He's the perfect boss character who's good to his subordinates, but he slips up on this occasionally, so it's also hard to dislike him. When he met the prarie dog Kyan, Kyan bestowed upon him a mysterious power to become the Bankara Shin'eitai. In order to drive out a world without discipline, he aims to elitely conquer the world with discipline. When it comes to Unzen, he gets irritated...

[T/N 7: The Japanese says his title could either be "prince" or "duke", but which it is has not been confirmed as of this translation.]

Samon Nyuutou, voiced by Youhei Azakami. Binan High 2nd year. Student council vice president. From the noted noble Nyuutou family [8]. From a young age, he has been Domeki's rear-guard and follows him around, serving him. A hot-blooded idiot, he disregards the fact swords are banned and always carries around a Japanese sword by his side, but...there is a rumour he is not strong. It seems there's also a rumour he's dumb and the lowest academic position of his year, but he's hiding it at all costs in front of the student council. As Domeki's read-guard, anywhere Domeki goes, he goes too!

[T/N 8: The Japanese says his title could either be "count" or "earl", but we don't know, as of this translation.]

Tasuku Nekoma, voiced by Daiki Yamashita. Binan High 1st year. Student council secretary. Born to the noted noble Nekoma family, but he's a baron in name only and his family is poor. It seems he grows tubers [9] in Nekoma Farm [13]. He's smart and vigilantly seeks to overthrow his superiors, so he makes snide remarks and gets irritated at the hot-blooded Nyuutou without telling him. He has a complex because his social standing is lower than Domeki and Nyuutou's.

[T/N 9: The Japanese says imo, which could cover potatoes, yams and taro. The exact type of tuber is unknown, as of this translation.]

[T/N 13: Might be a farm or a plantation.]

Kyan, voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto. A mysterious prarie dog manipulating the student council. Domeki found him [3] in an abandoned (?) mikan [10] box. His favourite food is mikan. He says "CAN CAN YOU CAN" and such, which in some way seems to be based on a president's words [11].

[T/N 10: Mikan are a citrus which are kinda like mandarins.]

[T/N 11: Hard to tell if it's an anachronistic reference to President Obama's "yes we can" or not, as of the time of this translation...Also note mikan is not pronounced "me can" ("me can", as per English pronunciation, would be "mi- kyan" in Japanese), but there's wordplay potential there...]

Dorm Head Gotenba, voiced by Tomokazu Sugita. He's the leader of the Kurotama dorm. He chops wood at the back of the Kurotama dorm for heating the bath. In the era [of Haikara, i.e. Taisho era], one would wear undershorts, but he wears a fundoshi. Incidentally, his first name is unknown. There is also a rumour his name is Nanigashi [12].

[T/N 12: Nanigashi is written in katakana here so it should be treated as a name, but when written in kanji (何某 or 某), the closest appropriate meaning would be "Mr So-and-so".]
