shipping one women with countless men is inherently misogynistic. and i’m not just talking about within the harry potter fandom, i’m talking across all fandom but of course i’ll be using hp as my focus point considering that’s what i’m most familiar with. specifically, hermione granger.
she had one (1) canonical boyfriend who she ended up marrying and having two kids with. MAYBE two if you count krum, but they say that they never really label it or anything so we’ll go with one, that being ron. there’s also cormac but she canonically only entertained him because she thought it’d make ron jealous.
of course i get fandom shipping (not specifically with ron and hermione considering they’re canonically soulmates) and wanting them both to be with other people, but in the terms of romione somehow hermione is always the one that people want with somebody else. ron is constantly put with somebody random just as an excuse to get him out of the way, or even worse, made abusive or a cheater which… boy i could go on about that one. but i digress (for now).
despite her canonically not have a s/o until ron she is relentlessly shipped with her oppressors such as lucius malfoy, draco malfoy, tom riddle/voldemort, scabior, and so so so many more. you shouldn’t need an explanation on why that is wrong. then, of course, your regular pro ships like her with sirius black, remus lupin, severus snape, etc. which is appalling that i feel the need to explain that even though she’s an adult by the end of the series (without 19YL) she met these men at 11, 13, and 14. and yes, it’s more than “fiction.”
the urge that people, and sadly specifically women, feel to ship her with these men that sound insane when you explain it in simple terms like “this is a muggle-born and someone who wants her dead” or “this is a man and girl that he met when she was a preteen” is rooted in misogyny in hatred for who hermione really is, a “not like other girls” archetype. and no, i don’t really like the archetype and the portrayal but it’s really and truly who she is. she’s a bookworm and her two best friends are boys, throughout the series she makes fun of more traditionally feminine girls (lavender, fleur).
and while it’s okay for women to do whatever they want, it’s harmful to not allow them to do so, in the case that hermione granger’s character and personality is changed simply for the sake of shipping. passing her around to multiple men, who she canonically hates, is destructive to her character and her stance on political issues as a woman during a war where she is a main target for oppression. it itself is oppressive.
when a woman’s personality is taken away, changed, obstructed, or anything else that takes away from what she really is for the sake of putting her with a man it is misogynistic. dampening a female character’s traits for the sake of putting her with a man is misogynistic. giving hermione granger the personality of a brick to ship her with a death eater is misogynistic. and no, don’t ship hermione with someone other than ron as a “gotcha” moment toward jkr. i’m sure she doesn’t give a shit what you think, ship people who make sense. not ones you think someone would dislike.

Not disputing you ofc but do you remember the exact line about ron looking like bill perchance? I would love it for referencing purposes
thank you very much for the ask, anon!
and i am afraid that you're getting a more long-winded answer than you may have been hoping for...
male weasleys are split down the middle into two camps, physically:
charlie, fred, and george are described as being short and stocky [although "short" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, since they're all taller than harry: fred and george shrink when they take polyjuice potion to transform into him in deathly hallows].
the implication - i think - is that charlie and the twins look like molly, who is described several times as short and plump in build. ginny is also described numerous times in the books as short and is said in chapter thirty-three of order of the phoenix to resemble fred and george facially, which, since's she's described in deathly hallows as having her mother's brown eyes - which probably triggered some sort of freudian shudder in harry - means i think we can conclude that this half of the family all look their mam.
[and also that molly is a hottie herself. she often gets turned by the fandom into a fairly sexless being - even though she didn't have those seven children immaculately, did she? - with a strict, prudish vibe. and - to do some discourse for a moment - we all know that the fact that she's described as fat is the direct cause of this. but several men are canonically ready to risk it all for ginny - and it's time we all acknowledged this is because she inherited her bonafide baddie powers straight from molly.]
percy and ron - on the other hand - are, like arthur, described as being tall, thin, and gangly. bill is never explicitly said to be slender, but he is described in the fifth chapter of goblet of fire as "tall" immediately after harry has stated that charlie is short[ish] and broad - which allows us to reasonably infer that he's on the arthur-weasley-skinny-legend side of the family.
and we can also assume - since ron is never said to resemble molly, nor [to harry's great relief] ginny, facially - that his features - his long nose and blue eyes - come from his father, who is also the source of percy's short-sightedness.
and, while harry [the narrative perspective] never says that he thinks arthur is hot - because why would he? - nor percy and ron [although i think it's worth noting that he doesn't consider it ridiculous that both of them manage to pull - and it's never suggested that penelope clearwater and lavender brown aren't cuties] it's actually possible to justify the idea that they are canonically fit using more than pure hot air...
[harry does - obviously - think bill's a babe. he sees fleur checking him out and immediately thinks... same.]
because a very striking narrative choice that the series makes is the idea that all pureblood nuclear family units look identical to each other - which serves as a visual metaphor for the importance of blood-status and lineage within the wizarding world. this is why narcissa malfoy is as pale and blonde as lucius and draco [even though bellatrix and andromeda are dark haired] and why molly is a redhead even though red hair and freckles are stated in the text to be weasley - rather than prewett - traits. harry's resemblance to his pureblood father eases his passage through wizarding society. voldemort's lack of resemblance to his pureblood mother does the opposite.
the weasleys and the malfoys are narrative mirrors within the series - with the fact that ron and draco are both so near-identical to arthur and lucius as to be immediately identifiable as each man's son by anyone who meets them part of this mirroring. it makes sense, then, that since the non-ron weasley children don't have a specific malfoy mirror, the same general principle applies, and the three weasley brothers who are built like arthur also strongly resemble him facially - and that bill also has a long nose [and a long something else, i'll wager!] and a cracking pair of baby blues.
or that if bill is hot, arthur is hot - and therefore if arthur is hot, ron is hot.
[where bill outpaces his brothers, i fear, is that he clearly has rizz - whereas ron's seduction skills are famously weak before he gets his hands on a copy of twelve fail-safe ways to charm witches - i.e. when he cockblocks harry spectacularly by beefing with cho unprovoked about the quidditch team she supports, which always sends me - and percy is... percy.]
[if ron had simply played it cool he could have finessed going to the ball with fleur, and i'll die on that hill...]

god sorry i usually like to keep my discourse to twitter but are u stupid
Have you noticed the difference between Dramione and Romione Fanfics?
In Dramione fics, it’s mostly based on Ron bashing, his death, blood supremacy, rape, and non-consent.
While Romione fics are mostly based on Heart warming fics, angst is there is some of them, smut is sure there, and the relationship they have between each other is shown and their kids.
This is why I hate Dramione, it is always based on negative things. Always rape or non-consent or adultry or bashing. Smh, I worry about the authors mental health.
Peace out.

Thank you, thank you thank you to everyone who submitted, read, reblogged, and supported the fest again this year! We wouldn't be successful without YOU!
Just like last time we created a feedback form for you to tell us what you liked and didn't. And we'd love to see what tropes you want to read next time!
And I've corrected the link to actually be the form (and posted on the right blog. reasons why adenei should not mix work and fic. woops)

romione in terms of “spice”
this is going to be a lot less nsfw than you think it is
unfortunately anyone who has tiktok knows that there’s this thing called “booktok” which had led to horrible things in literature like trope marketing, glorification of domestic violence and abuse, and other things. one thing to note is that a lot of these (mostly) women on booktok are looking for one thing in particular when they read a book; romance. or at least that’s what they call it. i feel as if anyone who has romantic experience finds it anything but that, but either way. when it comes down to it they think good romance = good smut. and good smut actually means bdsm.
tldr: people don’t like romione, or romione smut because ron isn’t dominant.
i was unfortunate enough to come across a tiktok—posted by a dramione, of course—where it’s a filter and it does the characters and it gives a trope, an ending, “spice levels” and other meaningless things meant to interest people. the results of said person’s filter are below.
Tumblr media
the characters were obviously ron and hermione but it uses rupert and emma’s faces and i don’t like to consider them at all, especially when talking about something nsfw so just pretend it’s there!
anyways yeah sure whatever. i open the comments. the first one is below.
Tumblr media
which this is just a bit confusing even when it comes to surface level canon… didn’t he spend a great part of the sixth book sucking face with a girl he didn’t even like? consider how much more has to be happening between him and someone he’s actually in love with.
the second concern is the line “we all know ron[‘s] personality.”
ron’s personality is not dominant. romione’s and dramione’s alike actually agree on that one thing, for the most part! but why exactly should ron’s personality and ron’s personality only define how “spicy” they can get in the bedroom?
like i said in the first paragraph, they see “spice” or good sex as bdsm. and as we’ve established most romiones don’t see or write ron as a traditional “dom” in anyway. if anything, more of us think hermione is the dom and there’s dramiones/romione antis who have agreed with this… but still don’t think they’re “spicy.”
if there’s still an s/m aspect to it… why is it not “spicy” anymore? it’s quite obvious to anyone (or at least i think so). they don’t find it hot because the man’s not in charge. because the woman isn’t be controlled, but instead doing the controlling.
and i know there are plenty of fics of dramione or any ship but romione out there of a mistress/sub man but in most m/f relationships the dom man/sub woman is a lot more popular, no matter the characters personality. i’ve seen it happen with romione where the writer would rather have a woman be out of character to be dominated than have hermione dominate, or even just tone down ron’s dominance to make it in character again.
i myself do admit that i have written some things where hermione’s a bit submissive but i try to never make ron dominant because he just isn’t.

I really wanted to animate one of these scenes where Ron and Harry are goofing off, because I think it’s interactions like these that make the books fun.
Ron is my favourite character. And you can tell just from watching my other videos. The movies did my boy so dirty, this is my way of giving him the spotlight for once.
