A deep meditation on dissociation, addiction, and the self. The Drunk, The Gambler, and The Lover is an internal narrative made external, flush with dialogue and metaphor. As The Drunk struggles to write her book we follow her into her struggles with her body, her addiction and holding her liquor. This book requires your whole undivided attention and is all the better for it.
Nothing occurs. Time passes and more things do not occur.

Thinking about how wild it is that enshittification starts as a way for the rich to squeeze the populace for more money but ends up infecting everything so even luxury products decline in quality. They’ve got more money than fucking God now and for what? Literally they can’t even buy fun nice stuff for themselves because they killed craft.
Anyway this post is about Dhaka muslin but it’s also about everything.

Hand sewn skirt project review

Right, so!
My first hand sewn project and I'm calling it a: SUCCESS!
Issues:
ㆍThe skirt is more like a wrap around strapless dress. Should have measured WAY more carefully before cutting. I did realize midway through, but I was too committed to the bit then to actually change it up. Besides, that might have been a little wasteful, and it doesn't really matter, because these are house clothes anyway.
ㆍBad construction. The pleating and gathering were only barely successful, this material really wasn't conductive to the pattern I wanted to use, so I had to pivot and pivot HARD. The stitching is thus, too messy, but again, not a big deal beyond cosmetics.
Improvements:
ㆍQuick work! Even for a skirt, hand sewing took TIME and I'm surprised I was able to do it in 3 days, especially because it's my very first.
ㆍGood cutting: Way less messy than my first attempts. Even the back stitch is less flip floppy and more aligned. Some of that is just the fabric, but I'm giving it a part of it to myself too.
ㆍImprov success: There were times where I was just making it up as I went and it did not ruin the final product! also a success, considering past failures.
All in all, I'm giving myself a solid..... 7.2! Not Bad, definately achived the final goal, but there's a lot of room for improving and learning. And because the stakes were low, not the end of the world when things went south.

I recommend Jenni Dobson's Making Kimono for resources in historical and not so historical Japanese clothing construction. She has great chapters on Mompe pants and Hippari
I think one of the Worst Things about wanting to find period clothing from other cultures, is trying to find fucking casual/work clothes. Like no, I do not want to see all these fancy intricate kimonos, I want to see jinbei, and field work outfits so I don't put a damn obi on this poor boy so he has a belt to hang his knife from.
