where they all had to perform songs + dances and there were hilariously bad contestants. like some demon over here trying to perform skz god's menu with a squeaky voice. and jinu is clutching his ears in agony. and the other demons get a little bit of say in who makes it to the next level through voting and its one way they get entertained under the honmoon or whatever their little demon realm is called

he then trains the winners from the ground up.

annabeth: neurosurgeon

duh i feel this is self explanatory. there's always so much more to learn about the brain and annabeth would love that. and also she would be great at leading in the OR.

she would also be commited to being a lecturer and doing presentations as well

the type of person who everyone wants as a mentor

but also very no nonsense as she has high expectations for everyone, but not the type that would yell but just be demanding because she knows people can do it.

hobbies of martial arts (nobody at judo knows that she's a doctor til a medical emergency happens and she's like "i got this" and they're all astonished

percy: ER 

he doesn't hesitate and he wouldn't care about fame. he just wants to make people's lives better, whether that be stitching up some teenager who fell off their skateboard or something else

also he's chaotic, and if anything about the ER that i've learned from TV shows (okay so not the best source material...) is that they're chaotic too

he doesn't hesitate to make decisions and he's not the type to spend hours wondering what the course of action is. impulsiveness can be a plus.

his OR has such vibes as he plays music (it helps him concentrate) and everyone wants to be in there. he never yells at people either. he's a guy everyone likes (unless you manage to get on his bad side..)

his hobbies are of course swimming, and going on the ocassional boating trip

he's the type of guy that he'd end up helpign with flood or hurricane relief, even they're off work. doctors without borders or wtv that's called.

leo: pediatric surgeon

Okay so he totally took biomedical engineering in college but idk he changed his mind

He has nimble hands that would suit the smaller space that you would have to work on

his attidute would be a hit with all the kids as he brings a sort of "fun" to a perhaps tense atmosphere and he explains things better too

But don't forget his inventions, he would tinker with medical tech on the side. bringing new innovations to the field to better the lives of his patients as notices stuff they need or want

he knows what its like to be a small and scared kid and he would want to do everything to bring comfort to his patients.

like percy he would play music in the OR

also he's a total car guy. on the times he's not at work, you find him in the garage.

Lockwood and Co. AU for SoC (title in progress) - the first mission with Kaz, Inej, and Jesper. This is the beginning of them turning from strangers to mates they would trust w/ their lives.

Wylan Character Study (Sort of) (Title is also in progress)- Wylan kind of burning out/losing motivation and then starts gaining a love for mechanical engineering while trying to cure the loss of motivation through attending lectures at Uni

Matthias isn't my favorite character, but his personality and growth holds my heart.

His deeply religious background and how he tries so hard to keep his faith. His love for someone whose always been deemed "unnatural" in his world. His inner war with himself as he tries to balance his beliefs and nina.

it's beautiful towards the end, when he finally finds a way to merge his beliefs. I think I can read that chapter over and over again because it had been a long time coming and boom he had that revelation. It's beautiful.

how beliefs that encourage hatred and division can be altered to something that breeds love. it's a matter of perspective in religion. religion can be used to aid conquest, commit murders, everything and more. but it can also be used to spread love. Matthias is proof of that, he never got to spread his new revelations but the fact that he had them showed that change was possible. showed hope for a future not built on hatred and religious justification.

his story is one of hope to me. that one day religions can stop being used as tools of hate. that people can change. that people are not stuck in a box. that people can learn that there are no "unnatural" people and there just are people.

I know practise is the one true way to get better at something: but what other tips do you have for others to improve their writing? What has worked for you? What hasn't?

Generally though, here's a few things off the top of my head.

Just Do it

You got it, the only way to get better is practice, and that means sit down and write. Don't get intimidated by a blank page, something is better than nothing, but also don't be afraid to rewrite an entire thing if you need to.

Just sit down and do it.

Get Someone to Look at it, Get Their Real Opinion

Get someone to look at your work and ask for honest feedback. Ideally, this is someone whose writing you admire/think you can learn from. Regardless, though, you have to make it clear that you're not afraid of honest to god criticism and do actually want to improve.

A lot of people I see asking for advice substitute it for asking someone to a) validate their writing b) tell them only when they have a few typos. This encouragement is nice, crucial even, but it won't help you improve.

You have to be willing to be honest with yourself and have others be honest with you in turn.

Read Everything

Read things that are good, read things that are bad, think about why you find them to be good or bad.

What Doesn't Work

Any cheap trick that will tell you "all you need to be a good writer is to do A, B, and C, and always avoid D" if it was that easy, everyone would be Shakespeare.

Character sheets are nonsense. They turn whatever character you have into a 2-D pile of waffle. If a character is only a pile of traits, likes and dislikes, they fail to be real on a page. And you can almost always tell what quirky character came from a character sheet.

There are no golden dos or don'ts. Having a character more powerful than other characters isn't always bad. Having a character with 'flaws' doesn't always make them good and complex.

The Hero's Journey and other plot structures are helpful only to a limited degree. Yes, you need a climax and catharsis, but don't marry yourself to a particular outline and tell yourself that you can't stray from it because you have to follow the structure.

I am rereading SoC/CK for the second time and I realized I got Wylan wrong.

He literally explicitly stated in the book that he doesn't like chemistry. He's good at it but that's not his jam. He likes equations, music, etc. and he also likes knowing how things work (the parallels with him and Kaz are a whole thing I wanna get into too)

So I put forth the idea of Wylan as an engineer, maybe a mechanical engineer. He's good at drawing, math, etc. The mechanics are intriguing. He never really thinks about becoming one until everything is kinda in a lull, don't need to spend too much time with finances etc. And just decides to study it.

And realizes how much he loves engineering. The numbers and practical applications. He would devour lectures about all this and becomes an frequent presence at the university where he isn't a student but still pays yknow.

it's time for another round of making fanon concepts funny to me, personally.

this tim we'll tackle tim drake, home alone at age 8.

so we set the stage: tim drake is at home, and his parents are nowhere to be found. he's just a poor 8 year old little boy, eating nothing but cereal and microwaved hot dogs and granola bars because he does know better than to use the stove without adult supervision.

nobody would notice poor tim's plight, except one night he orders pizza and dick-as-robin just happens to be undercover as a pizza delivery boy because mad hatter's been targeting pizza delivery boys for something or other and he gets to be the one to deliver this really weirdass pizza (who orders canadian bacon and artichoke hearts? that's weird enough that dick is already like. heightened awareness)

so undercover and disguised dick delivers this weird pizza and an 8 year old comes to the door with money in his hand to pay. which. is a little strange. actually, now that dick is paying attention, he's not hearing any other signs of life in the house. and like, he's robin. this kid's parents could be passed out drunk upstairs leaving him to fend for himself (not good) or they left an 8 year old home alone for dinner (which. isn't great either.) or maybe they did a quick run to the store for soda or something (best case scenario). now dick is smooth, and doesn't want to spook the kid by prying too much because he's disguised as a pizza delivery boy and he doesn't want to come across weird so all he says is "sorry, we need an adult to pay, is mom or dad home?"

and the kid turns white and his eyes dark right and left and he's says "um, sorry nevermind. we don't need pizza anymore" and slams the door in dick's face. and doesn't answer when dick rings the doorbell again. which, points for tim for stranger danger but now dick is Suspicious.

but there's nothing he can do now, cause henhas to go finish his shift. and he eats the dumb gross pizza because he's hungry and his boss will be taking the cost of it out of his wages anyways so he may as well (which, dick is so going to report him once he's solved this mad hattet case) and he can't stop thinking about weird kid.

is it an attempt at trying to signal to someone he's being abused? are his parents junkies and he's trying to hide it? whatever it is, dick can't stop thinking of it. so he brings it home to bruce, who agrees they should look into it. a search of the address shoss it's a townhouse belonging to one jack and janet drake, parents one one son, timothy (weird kid). clean records, frequent donaters to charity, no obvious red flags of any kind. tim attends boarding school during the school year, his grades are good and no teachers have ever noticed anything out of sorts--by all accounts, tim is an extroverted, friendly, upbeat kid.

the case is getting curiouser. then again, sometimes it's never what you expect and dark things can be hidden under the surface. a quick glance at drake industries' itinerary show that jack and janet are supposed to be in beijing right now. the horror sets in....was tim left home alone? batman and robin are on the case.

they go to the townhouse and find tim, alone. tim is naturally terrified, because they came to interrogate him and making implications about his parents. who aren't bad people like batman and robin are implying. he's on the verge of tears. he loves batman and robin and why is this happening to him. he's fine. fine. this is not fine. "no" tim insists. "it's not like that"

"son," batman says kindly. robin is nodding along. tim is mortified. he will never live this down, batman and robin coming to save him. "it's okay to love your parents, but sometimes parents don't do the right thing."

tim starts crying now. "no," he says. "you don't understand. they didn't leave me alone, they wouldn't. they're home, i promise. don't put them in jail they're not criminals"

"tim'" batman says. "we just want to help-"

at that moment a large banging is heard on a door. batman and robin look over--they see a door that's got a chair in front of it jamming it. a home invader? unlucky. robin is at the ready.

"is someone there? tim, are you okay? whoever you are--if you hurt my boy, i'm going to get you--tim, for the last time, open this door and let your mother and i out!"

nobody says anything for a bit. tim's just sniffling. batman goes and removes the chair blocking the door and opens it. jack and janet drake are standing there. batman blinks. jack blinks.

the whole story comes out. jack and janet had come home from beijing because tim had a medical emergency at his summer camp and had to come home. it was a ruse by tim though--you see, he had seen a movie recently where this kid's parents had been fighting and planning on getting a divorce and he and some other neighborhood kids decided to lock their parents up in the basement until they learned to love each other again. so tim, in all his 8 year old wisdom feigned a medical thing at camp and got his parents to come home so he could try in on them because their fights had been getting worse lately. and after he locked them in there, he got a little nervous about it but then his dad was really mad so maybe they just needed a little more time....and also once they got out he was so grounded.

so there's no bad guy, no abuse. just a kid and his parents who were glaring daggers at each other. dick thinks that the whole locking them together might've had the opposite effect that intended. poor kid. batman and robin leave, and batman gives tim a stern talking to (mortifying. absolutely mortifying). and jack and janet thank them for being worried and checking in on tim. as they leave they hear the start of another argument--"tim, you're grounded for the next three years." jack says. "jack," janet admonishes. "this is a cry for help, clearly." "janet," jack says through gritted teeth, "the boy locked us in the basement for a day." "well, yes. but."

jack and janet end up getting divorced way sooner than before. dick puts the kid out of his mind until years later, when a 12--no, 13--year old boy finds him at the circus, saying batman needs help.

"and what, pray tell, do you think i should do about it, exactly," dick says. "lock him in the basement until he behaves or something?"

Also Note: these are recs that I've read more than a year ago, so forgive me for being vague. There's a high possibility I don't remember much except main plot points (and maybe even not that). And I don't have enough time to reread them all (I wish I did).

Reverse Robins: Joker Junior series by miyaji_08 (complete)

Tim Drake centered. Basically he's joker junior, shenanigans occur, especially in the second one.I LOVE THESE. I am not kidding when I say I have read these two fics multiple times over. The writing style is incredible. The batman family feels very unified, which is at odds of canon but I'm a sucker of family <33. And it is reverse robin, but such an interesting take. Tim isn't Red Hood (joker junior as it says in the title), but he does kill people I believe. Idk it's been a while. Anyways, If you find the concept of reverse robins interesting, this one is definitely a must-read!! The second one also features the core-fore mildly so there's that to look forward to.

when doves cry by Scarlet_Ribbons (complete)

This is a masterfully written one shot. It's gorgeous and painful in the best ways possible. Tim drake centric (wow seeing a theme here eh) with brother Jason Todd. This is a sort of drakes were neglectful type fic but that's not the main focus. I think it was more about Tim and Jason's relationship. This was BEAUTIFULLY written. The author is terrific at what they do and my eyes were blessed.

I don't remember much of this one, but I can remember the association of angst I felt with it. It was a good read, but do be mindful of the tags for triggers or anything of the sort. It features Ra's and Tim, and it's just owiefaksdfkwkf. Now I gotta go reread it wow. Maybe this list is just a reread list for me lmao.

oh man. This is a one shot btw. I just reread this because the title hit me in the gut and also to refresh my memory. And holy cow. This was omg. Neglectful Drakes and baby Tim. It was hurt/comfort. It's a really good read and I recommend it fs.

Oneshot! This is the first one shot I read with trans Tim and it was brilliant. I love the interactions in this fic and I'm glad it introduced me to this head canon! I think Jack Drake is an alright parent? very mediocre in this but not abusive I don't think from what I can recall. Great writing <3

Running Rings 'Round by justapoorboy (incomplete 2/4)

This is a crack-ish fic, but I enjoyed it immensely. It really spoke to my soul in critiquing the status of the healthcare system through its ability to favor the rich and really leave the poor to fend for themselves. Basically Tim and morally-grayness occurs through his entrance to the black market (?? Sort of??). I'm not describing it very well, you'll just have to read it and see ig.

Can't Stay Down (a documentary) by SonoSvegliato (complete)

Tim gets his tonsils out (wow he's down a lot of organs lmao). The amount of effort the author put in is clearly visible. I don't recall much other than good dad bruce and so much comfort. It was great!!

Statue of Limitations by Oka_Hills1232 (complete)

BILLY BATSON. Aren't you guys glad its something other than batman (I know I am, wow I had a phase). One shot of Billy revealing his age to the justice league and shenanigans occur. This is hilarious and I remember mentally giggling so much during it. It's so fun and if I ever have a bad day, I would want to end it off with this, just to make things better.

The Time Lost in Between by Magical_Devil_Alex (complete)

ANOTHER BILLY BATSON. Oh captain marvel, here to save us from the excess batman. Oh never mind, this is centered around batman and captain marvel. I vaguely remember this fic and Billy is trying so hard to outmaneuver the world's greatest detective and it is brilliant. It's a great concept and executed very well! Terrific!!!

Settle Our Bones series (Idk if it's complete but there are 8 works)

Okay I'll be honest I don't really remember anything about this and it's too long to reread. (wow am I secretly dory) Here's what I do remember tho: The characterization Is magnificent. Everyone has their flaws, especially because of past traumas/events and their actions make sense and I don't ever see them as irrational. It's a fix it of Jason never dies but Tim is still there for the ride. I believe there's bad parents Jack and Janet, but I'm not 100% sure. It's a great (and long) series so definitely read it if you can <3

Just A Kid by sardonic_sprite (incomplete 3/?)

Jason Todd and his goons and ig the bats added to the mix. That's it. It's hilarious and the humor is *chefs kiss*.

A Good Soldier by VioletVain (complete)

I was locked into the idea of social media AUs in the DC universe, and that's where this came in. It's one of the best social media AUs that I've seen from whatI can remember. It's great, IT basically talks about the debate of in-universe outsiders talking about child soldiers and just robin. Great take on internet discourse that would undoubtedly occur within the DC universe!

stay gold by airyfaerie (complete)

OH MY GOSH. I VIVIDLY RECALL THIS ONE SHOT. This was a gorgeous fic dedicated to Damian and Duke's relationship, especially as people of color. It talks about their different cultures and Damian's experience with his culture. This is especially important to me because the amount of times I have seen people white-wash characters within fandom spaces is insane. BUT THIS ONE. This one, you can tell the author has done their research or knows their stuff, because the feelings that Damian emits, I can feel. I feel seen with this fic. With complex undertones and how do you find your place in a world that is so different from your culture. It talks about food and. Im just, it's gorgeous and PLEASE READ IT AND COMMENT ON IT I BEG.

The other works in the series are terrific as well!! This is just the one that struck me right in the heart and I will forever yell about it.

This concept is so funny. Jason coming back just to be a coffee shop owner. I loved it!! It's a fic about Jason getting back to the family and STEPH!! Oh how I've missed her.

oh wow. complex mother Janet, oh how I love complex female characters. The exploration of the mother/son relationship that Janet and Tim possess. This is beautiful and intricate and it touches my heart. Everyone's just trying and sometimes that's not enough and its just *sigh*. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous writing. But then again, anything by this author is beautiful. It's a sign for all of you to binge everything this author has written RIGHT NOW.

"4 batkids walk into a bank" great summary of it truly. It was a funny fic and please! I sound like a broken machine but do read this one too!! It's *mwah*.

alternate universe!! This was my first damijon (Damian Wayne and Jonathan Kent) fic that I've read and it is the reason I like the pairing. It's such a cute little coffee shop AU, where Jon is a barista bc poor guy just wants a car and Damian is a regular. It's great!! I'm so glad this was my introduction into the damijon ship.

Straight on Til Morning by Merils (complete)

OKay,, THIS IS THE KON EL AUTHOR AND THE KON FIC. This Is what got me to read earlier comics and really superman comics as a while. The author is spectacular and really knows what they are doing. I could rave on and on about this fic. Kon and his relationship with growing up and adult hood and what was his adolescence ( did he even really have one ).

There is timkon, but that is definitely not the full focus of this fic and do not focus on the bats when the supers have such a complex relationship with each other. KonEl is spectacular and this fic really shows his chracterization and his relationships with other characters like Clark and his father/brother/uncle who even knows type relationship with him, And then the core four too!!. PLEAE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS I BEG OF YOU ON MY KNEES AND UNDERSTAND HOW BEAUTIFUL TH ESUPERS ARE AND OMG

This is so cute!! Marinette and Jason Todd get paired up together. I think Jason thought Marinette was some trafficker but soon realizes she isn't and they help each other out (sort of). I don't remember much but I do recall it was great !!
