Tuesday 8th February 2022 Tencent's senior vice president Steven Ma talks about how the metaverse is one element of a new future where games transcend their medium. It wasn't long ago that video gaming indicated playing Pong in an arcade or firing up an eight-bit home console to shoot blocky area invaders. Today, we play games with 3D graphics at 4K resolution on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X - if you can discover one - or on your state-of-the-art smartphone. And significantly, as hardware specs improve and designers develop new material by slipping on a VR headset and getting in a 360-degree virtual world. Games are created for home entertainment, whether they use cards, a board, a mobile phone, PC, console, or headset. But a funny thing has happened since the world of gaming moved from analog to digital, from real-life to virtual ones: never before have so many around the globe been in touch with each other. To offer you a sense of size and scope here's but one example: considering that Tencent Games released PUBG MOBILE in 2018, players have downloaded the game over 1 billion times. That's roughly one out of every 7.7 individuals in the world downloading and playing a single video game with each other on their cellphones. And daily, some 50 million players from dozens of countries, including the UK, United States, Brazil, and more, team up in PUBG MOBILE to achieve their mission. So, as the head of Tencent Games - the world's largest games platform company by many measures - it occurs to me that it's time for game developers to accomplish ours. We might savor the popularity of our excellent video games and the income they generate. But that would misuse a much-bigger opportunity to make the world we reside in much better. Startup founders and executives typically wave the wand about greater purpose and altruism, and however, we all understand that real magic is in action and outcomes. The video games sector has reached an inflection point. For a company like Tencent, our company believes that it includes many duties when you have such a big, engaged global audience. While we will continue to blaze a trail with advances in technology and player experience, we must apply them to the requirements of broader society. And keeping the international neighborhood in mind is quite in line with Tencent's overall mission statement: "worth for users, tech for good." " We think it's on other developers of groundbreaking innovation and us to tackle real-world problems." I enjoy music and culture. I was recently advised of how games can play a role in preserving and promoting both when my country's most popular video game-- Honor of Kings-- produced a new in-game skin inspired by traditional Chinese Yue Opera. Attendance at live efficiencies has, unfortunately, dwindled recently. Envision my surprise, however, when I discovered some 80 million players had utilized the skin, exposing them to the category and its characters and producing renewed interest in what previously seemed passing away art form. A Powerful Medium Using video games and technology to help provide better results in education. In 2018, Tencent buckled down about Serious Games, publishing ones that taught users typing and geometry at their speed - and in an enjoyable and engaging method. A year later, we demonstrated our technological prowess with a game that allowed the aesthetically impaired to play. Another enabled the visually unimpaired to experience the world without full vision. Last year, I was thrilled to hear about the 'MindPod,' a video gaming experience aimed at assisting fix the brains of stroke victims from MindMaze Healthcare. I saw the video game put to practical use in the UK's Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital. Our responsibility as a leading game platform likewise indicates a healthy environment for all, with a particular focus on our more youthful players. As such, Tencent is associated with numerous programs, including the #WePROTECT Global Alliance, which aims to offer a safer and more secure internet for teenagers and children. The honor of Kings has helped improve conventional Chinese Yue Opera I marvel at how technology - the hardware, software, connection, coding, and more - has fundamentally changed the method we engage and play with each other; we must bear in mind gaming is not all about technology. Blending Experiences This brings us to the metaverse and what it suggests to Tencent and the whole video game sector. For us, it is but one iteration of lots of versions of what we refer to as 'Hyper Digital Reality' in our future and present. Some of the game tech examples above program how we and others are currently integrating the real and virtual worlds. We see this sort of varied experience in esports, where arenas worldwide are filled with fans cheering on teams playing a digital sport. At the same time, millions more view live streams remotely and engage with each other using online chat and social platforms. And, as the world discovered itself highly limited from live performances last year, millions of gamers of Fortnite were treated to an interactive, in-game Ariana Grande musical trip, just the most recent demonstration of Hyper Digital Reality by Epic Games. We see that some pioneers have started to realize their vision with a purpose-built metaverse of their own, migrating their content and audience to a pre-formed digital destination. Our approach is various. We are a technology company. Drill into us, and at our core, you will also find a material- and experience-driven company. Our company believes in using innovation to push the limits of excellent content, allowing and creating brand-new experiences for our community. Discover more tasks in games. What I'm saying is the metaverse's day will come. And likewise, keep your eyes on the material and user experience. It's again still primitive, speculative, and since of technological momentum, going to alter and improve rapidly, as all digital platforms and hardware have over the past four years. I'm unsure precisely where video gaming is heading. Nevertheless, I do understand that when your VR headset hiccups or your screen freezes or drops frames, that's a reminder it is still in its infancy. And as far as we've already come, technically, experientially, and otherwise, what delights me is I am 100% sure that the best in video game content, experience, and technology is still ahead of us.

Microsoft's enormous offer to acquire Activision Blizzard might face a challenging review procedure. According to a report from Bloomberg, the Federal Trade Commission will evaluate the request instead of the Justice Department. The deal, which Microsoft anticipates to close by the end of fiscal Q4 2023, will see Microsoft gain control of major franchises like Call of Duty, Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. Microsoft has mentioned that it is preparing to keep releasing much of these video games on Sony's PlayStation platform, as long as current contract arrangements are in location. Still, the capacity remains for Xbox to shut its competitor out of a few of the biggest franchises worldwide in order for deal to go through. While both of these United States regulatory bodies supervise evaluating acquisitions, one generally takes the lead, and in this case, that will be the FTC, headed up by Lina Khan. Both the FTC and the Justice Department have promised to be harsher on big tech; however, Khan has been especially outspoken in her opposition to potential monopolies. RELATED What the Activision Blizzard deal means for video game devs and platforms. Microsoft closed a similar, however more minor, deal to acquire Bethesda early in 2015; however, that deal's procedure began under the previous administration's regulative bodies and concluded before Khan and her more stringent stance reached the FTC. Microsoft's deal isn't the only video gaming acquisition announcement in the last number of weeks either. On Monday, Sony announced that it is getting Bungie, the studio behind Destiny, in a $3.6 billion deal that will undergo government approval-- though the procedure is most likely to be a little less complex because the offer is so much smaller sized. Large-scale acquisitions of this type usually have been safe on the home entertainment side, with moves like Discovery's acquisition of Warner Media anticipated to go through. Still, Microsoft's participation, and the regular use of terms like metaverse, could turn this into a tech problem, which could prompt closer scrutiny from Khan's FTC. While all of these elements are likely to make the acquisition more questionable and challenging for Microsoft, we likely won't understand whether or not the Activision Blizzard deal will go through until several months from now, if not next year.

After 18 years, Wow is finally relaxing its deep, historic faction divide between Alliance and Horde players and letting them play together at last. As Blizzard announced today, an update is currently in the works to permit Alliance and Horde players to form parties together for dungeons, raids, and ranked PvP. Not readily available yet, the change is prepared for release as part of an eventual 9.2.5 update at some point after the upcoming significant patch, Eternity's End. The shift is, by requirement, somewhat restricted in scope. It has to be. World of Warcraft has always followed its Warcraft heritage in dividing the Alliance and Horde into warring factions-- in fact, the majority of the game is built on and around that divide. It has traditionally pursued stories that set the two groups at odds, pit the two against one another in PvP, and separated the groups for social structures like guilds, celebrations, and even interaction out in the world. One of its more current growths, Battle for Azeroth, explicitly focused around that faction dispute, though its resolution ended in a tenuous truce. Gamers will be able to straight welcome members of the opposing faction to parties if they are currently pals through BattleTag or RealID or members of an existing cross-faction community. When making pre-made groups in the Group Finder tool, they can open applications up to members of both factions or just their faction. Guilds and all random matchmaking activities will stay the same-faction, and gamers will stay hostile out in the world even if they are at a party together. A handful of instances with explicit faction-divided elements will likewise not work with cross-faction groups at least at the outset, consisting of Battle of Dazar' alor, Trial of the Crusader, and Icecrown Citadel. However, these might be revamped in the future. Cross-faction play is something the World of Warcraft community has been asking about for years now. And revisiting things we've stated 'no' to that people in the community have asked for ... And one of them has been the desire for cross-faction play in some type ... The answer had always been, well, it's Warcraft, people versus orcs, and it's Horde versus Alliance. Hazzikostas starts to compare it to Star Wars, suggesting that you wouldn't let Jedi and Sith cooperate in a Star Wars video game. Then he corrects, saying that the example is, in fact, somewhat various. "Someone selects to stroll the path of the light or to go to the dark side ... You're born Alliance, you're born Horde. That's something that's assigned to you, and that predestined fate isn't necessarily something that we want to stand by necessarily, the idea that your lot in the world because you were born an elf, you should dislike giants, and nothing can change that. "That's not the world we want to develop, but it's also not the world we have been developing or the story we've been telling for the last 20 years and going back to Warcraft 3. It had to do with the factions coming together to beat Archimonde to stop the significant risks to our world." Because communication outside of World of Warcraft has altered over the years, another big reason the change is taking place now is. Seventeen years back, Hazzikostas says, people satisfied their online good friends and communities through the game and their factions. Progressively over the years, that's changed significantly. "It was just sort of among those accepted guidelines at that time if you meet a friend, and you discover that you use different servers, oh well, you're never going to get to play with your buddy. That's just how WoW is. Whereas those borders have increasingly been taken apart and tons of neighborhoods have formed, and there are Discords and WoW individuals and communities who are friends on Twitter and other locations. The downside of keeping that hard-line grows with each passing year. "We frankly most likely reached the tipping point a bit earlier. In a video game like this, we're persistent and traditionalists, and it isn't very comforting to state: let's uproot this fundamental pillar of what the video game has been for over the years. However, it's time." Hazzikostas wants to stress that, a minimum of, for now, Blizzard isn't ready to jump to extremes like getting rid of factions entirely and letting a bunch of humans into Orgrimmar. That would weaken Azeroth's shared reality. Keeping it focused on cooperative play allows gamers to specify their limits for faction identity while easily letting them play with friends who happen to be with the opposing faction. That said, another reason they're keeping the change within scope, for now, is since it's a technically huge endeavor, touching on systems from how mission credits are shared to trading products to simple interaction in between players. Hazzikostas states there most likely won't be a story acknowledgment about the gameplay change, as the factions are presently already at an armistice. He does think it unlikely they'll ever do an "all-consuming faction conflict expansion once again" like Battle for Azeroth. He believes it most likely they'll concentrate on a wider variety of perspectives on the divide through characters and missions, such as the survivors of the burning of Teldrassil, Genn Greymane, members of the Forsaken, and all those in between-- all while letting gamers decide on their own where they stand concerning the opposing faction. Hazzikostas thinks they will not have either technical or ideological reason to execute the modification in World of Warcraft: Classic; he's open to hearing neighborhood feedback and reconsidering if the desire is there. And he acknowledges they might go down the line to consider other elements for the Retail variation, like cross-faction guilds. "At this point, I understand much better than to close any doors," Hazzikostas states. "This is a one-way process only ... We're not going to loosen up guidelines, allow social bonds to form or communities to grow, and after that, all of a sudden turn them back and state, nevermind, that was a mistake ... Technical considerations aside, something like outside gameplay would be a mammoth endeavor because of how all of our missions are built. Those considerations aside, we want to be conservative here. Still, we're going to be listening to our community, directed by the outcomes of how this experiment plays out, and still attempting to maintain Alliance and Horde identity; however, do so in such a way that is unified with how the game is played and how our gamers feel in 2022 and beyond." Considering that Hazzikostas had described the faction war as a "foundational pillar" of World of Warcraft, I asked him what, then, World of Warcraft's fundamental pillars are with this one uprooted. "It's simple to presume as shorthand that the core concept is Horde versus Alliance. I believe if you go back to like Warcraft 1 or Warcraft 2, well then yes, that held because it was simply a two-faction RTS game where the plot was created as a contrivance for why these factions are battling each other. "But really, from Warcraft 3 onwards, I think the perfects of Warcraft have been adventure, expedition, but likewise the truth that we have more in common than what separates us. That Alliance and Horde are both defending their homes, searching for homes, defending household, for honor, for justice."

The Best Videogames of January 2022 The computer game market has started 2022 with a bang. While Elden Ring is postponed beyond January 2022 and AAA shooter Rainbow 6 Extraction was a stinker, many great video games came out in January. From the most enthusiastic Pokémon video game yet to an indie video game that mastered the art of progression, there are five January 2022 video games in particular that you better not miss. Pokémon Legends: Arceus The Pokémon series is a popular franchise that frequently gets a lot of flack for not taking enough creative threats. Pokémon Legends: Arceus aims to alter gameplay that looks like Monster Hunter more than traditional Pokémon. Players slowly study and catch Pokémon, new and old, around an old version of Diamond and Pearl's Sinnoh region. "Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes a lot of experimental swings-- and numerous of them are successful," Digital Trends Gaming Editor Giovanni Colantonio composes. "The pivot to research-driven gameplay does a much better job at satisfying players for every little thing they do." In recent years, gamers who have gotten tired of the Pokémon formula will undoubtedly find Pokémon Legends: Arceus an appealing and revitalizing experience. It's the best AAA video game to release this month and the current must-play for Switch owners. Pokémon Legends: Arceus $ 60 FROM BEST BUY $ 60 FROM GAMESTOP Windjammers 2 Gamers wanting to have some exciting arcade enjoyable with buddies can't fail with Windjammers 2. This fancy sports game is a sequel to a 1994 NeoGeo arcade game where two gamers wildly throw a disc back-and-forth while attempting to score points in their challenger's objective. While the gameplay hook is simple and the arenas are minor, the range of characters and special relocations players have at their disposal means that no two matches feel the same as the disc zigs, zags, and bounces all around the arena. This sequel's fluid animation and online play provide the classic experience a modern-day feel, and a close match can feel even tenser than Rainbow Six Extraction. If your pal group took pleasure in Knockout City, Windjammers 2 is a far more bite-sized but just as engaging take on a similar formula. If you have Xbox Game Pass, windjammers 2 is the most okay multiplayer game to release in January 2022 and worth downloading and attempting. Major Sam: Siberian Mayhem Major Sam: Siberian Mayhem is the best shooter of January 2022. That comes as a surprise considering that this is a stand-alone expansion to the frustrating Serious Sam 4. While Serious Sam 4 from the series developers at Croteam was rife with technical problems and had developed levels, Siberian Mayhem was made by the fans-turned-developers at Timelock Studio. It fixed all of Serious Sam 4's worst problems. Most significantly, the level and opponent encounter style are more engaging. Instead of puzzling maze-like arenas, Siberian Mayhem's five phases are interactively created, have good time set pieces, and motivate continuous motion and combat. The story is a lost cause at this point as this is an interquel to a prequel of a prequel (Serious Sam tradition is strange), but that does not matter much as your character spouts cheesy one-liners while blasting through hordes of enemies. The video game even features co-op play. While it isn't as revelatory as Sonic Mania, Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem is yet another video game that demonstrates how some series are better in the hands of fans than the designers who developed them. Explorations: Rome Explorations: Rome is a meaty method RPG for history fans and hardcore PC gamers. Set throughout the height of the Roman empire, Expeditions: Rome follows Legatus (high-ranking Roman military officer) sent away from Rome after his family is betrayed and his dad is killed. The game features prolonged turn-based technique battles were picking the best gear, positioning, and moves for your characters. There's a surprisingly detailed story in between fights that includes characters like Julius Caesar and is full of player choice. It certainly can get overwhelming, especially for those less acquainted with the category or Roman history. Still, this is a method game for fans of record that will keep you enthralled for lots of hours. It's not for everybody. However, PC gamers who enjoy deep, nuanced technique games and timeless computer system RPGs like Baldur's Gate will find a lot to enjoy in Logic Artists' and THQ Nordic's most current. Nobody Saves the World If there's one video game you play this month, make it Nobody Saves the World. This indie game from Guacamelee and Severed developer Drinkbox Studios is one of the most charming games I've played in a long period and a master class in keeping the player engaged. While games such as Rainbow Six Extraction draw out XP-rewarding objectives like a mobile video game, Nobody Saves the World takes that formula and overwhelms the gamer with things to do. You can become 17 various forms, and each type has its ranking, special relocations, and obstacles to complete to level up. There's a vast world and numerous dungeons for players to check out, and players can switch passive and active abilities in-between forms at an impulse. There's constantly something you can advance or do in Nobody Saves the World, so it never gets boring. Combine that with amusing writing, a gorgeous art design, and a fight that's rewarding, however simple, and Nobody Saves the World is a video game that's difficult to put down once you pick it up. It's the best game of January 2022 and a must-play on Xbox Game Pass.

The 15 Most Anticipated Videogames Coming in 2022 Pokémon Legends: Arceus What is it? Pokémon Legends: Arceus re-imagines the style and instructions of the long-running franchise while retaining the core gameplay that has enabled the games to endure in fans' hearts for nearly 30 years. The video game's primary objective is to assemble Hisui's first Pokédex for the region's Survey Corps by capturing and studying the wild animals that live in the area. When can I play it? 28 January Passing Away Light 2 Stay Human What is it? After a struggling advancement cycle, which included writers and veteran employees leaving the business in the middle of rumors of conflicting visions of the video game, Techland's sequel to its cult hit of 2015 finally got gold status recently, validating its February release date. However, gameplay demos have revealed fans can expect much of the same, with improvements to the parkour and melee systems and a brand-new European setting. Techland has likewise excited the storyline, with different factions assuring multiple playthroughs to see everything The City deals. When can I play it? 4 February Horizon Forbidden West What is it? The follow-up to 2017's hugely influential Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West, will again see players take control of Aloy as she checks out a dystopian world of animalistic machines. The original was one of the year's games when it came out, and hopes are high for the sequel– offered it will arrive on a more powerful console in the PS5 and present several brand-new features, such as water expedition. When can I play it? 18 February Elden Ring What is it? Among the more intriguing video game collaborations, director Hidetaka Miyazaki connect with Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin to develop a brand new open-world for players to explore. Fans of Miyazaki's previous games, infamously punishing titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, will likely expect a severe challenge. There have been hints that the trouble may have been dialed down a notch or two. When can I play it? 25 February Gran Turismo 7 What is it? 2021's saw the release of Xbox's killer racing app in the form of Forza Horizon 5, and now it's the turn of Sony to get in on the act. The most recent installment of the long-running series of driving video games makes sure to be another aesthetically impressive recreation of motorsports. It's much more practical than Forza's take on hurling supercars throughout the terrain; it'll still be a blast. When can I play it? 4 March Tunic What is it? Mixing components of old-school Zelda video games with battle reminiscent of Dark Souls' huge sword swings, Tunic looks set to be among the indie hits of the year. You play as an adorable fox adventuring through an equally enticing world, but don't let the cuteness fool you. There's lots of peril between you and your objective. When can I play it? 16 March Saints Row What is it? The Saints Row games began as a serious contender to Grand Theft Auto's open-world crown and welcomed silliness more with each brand-new installment. The last game in the series saw you playing as a superpowered president securing the world from an alien invasion. This reboot of the series somewhat dials back the madness, but we're sure it will still provide plenty of tongue-in-cheek moments. When can I play it? 26 August Starfield What is it? Starfield is most likely to be the next substantial open-world role-playing expedition game and has even been described as ‘Skyrim in space' by makers Bethesda– and they need to understand, they made Skyrim. Due to being launched in November, the game sees gamers assume the role of a character in space exploration organization Constellation in the wake of a civil war in the solar system. Bethesda guarantees an extensive, impressive universe filled with a range of quests and activities that every gamer's experience is different. When can I play it? 11 November Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga What is it? The very first Lego Star Wars video game was released way back in 2005, kick-starting an unlikely franchise of film/video game crossovers embedded in versions of their source products' world adorably recreated with plastic bricks. Combining platforming with puzzles, each game since has been a fun-for-all-the-family kind of affair. The Skywalker Saga is a new game with fresh recreations of the first six Star Wars episodes and Lego variations of the more recent three. It looks set to expand on the video gaming series' well-trodden format with some solid new ideas, interplanetary exploration. With 100s of tricks and characters to discover, it will undoubtedly be a charming addition to a Star Wars fan's collection. When can I play it? TBC Dead Space What is it? Released in 2008, Dead Space stays a scary classic (and one of this writer's preferred titles of perpetuity), dropping gamers into the climatic setting of a deserted area freighter overrun with deadly, zombie-like “xenomorphs.”. The graphics and lighting impacts of the time – not to mention excellent sound design – still hold up perfectly today. Still, this remake will benefit from far more powerful video games consoles to provide a much more high-fidelity experience. Not one for the faint of heart, Dead Space is an exhilarating sci-fi/horror experience and one that needs to be a lot more terrifying with a lick of graphical paint. When can I play it? TBC The Lord of the Rings: Gollum What is it? An intriguing prospect for fantasy fans, this curious release will check out the backstory of one of the category's most famous, however, least understood characters. While you might be imagining epic fights and savage action, the makers assure something a little different, with gameplay focusing instead on stealth and parkour elements. Crafting also assures to include highly, while players will experience the inner struggle memorably brought to life in the film series between the two sides of Gollum's personality. When can I play it? TBC Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora What is it? The first Avatar computer game – released to coincide with James Cameron's first film in 2009 – was a basic film tie-in affair that didn't create much excitement. There's not much to suggest Ubisoft's second attempt will do the same, and fans might lament the relocation to the video gaming giant's well-worn open-world format too. But, with early trailers showcasing lavish, jungle-like areas to explore and thrilling set pieces, could this be something of a sleeper hit? When can I play it? TBC The Callisto Protocol What is it? We've currently mentioned Dead Space's in-space horror previously in this short article. However, it gets a 2nd mention here with The Callisto Protocol. A spiritual sequel to that franchise, the first video game from Striking Distance Studios, established by Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield. In 2320 at a prison nest called Black Iron located on Jupiter's moon Callisto, the gamer takes the role of a prisoner finding themselves amidst an alien intrusion that appears to have been crafted by the jail's warden. When can I play it? TBC God of War Ragnarök What is it? The most recent installment in the series picks up a couple of years after the previous video game's events, with protagonists Kratos and his son Atreus searching for a method to prevent the prophesized Ragnarok– End of Days. Equipped with brand-new skills, powers, and weapons, you will go on a quest to save the Norse God of War, Týr, searching for responses. For the first time in the series, you will visit all of the Nine Realms. However, Thor and Freya are standing in your method, both of whom seek revenge for their respective kids' deaths at the hands of Kratos. When can I play it? TBC The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 What is it? When the initial Breath Of The Wild game was launched in March 2017 as a Nintendo Switch launch title, the vibrant step in a brand-new direction for the Zelda franchise was rightly declared as a work of art. The desire for a direct sequel has been strong ever since. Anticipation reached a fever pitch with the E3 2019 teaser trailer. Despite Nintendo staying tight-lipped on the video game's advancement since, fans of the series can anticipate a go back to the rich and lovely kingdom of Hyrule, as Zelda and Link aim to conserve the domain in another legendary adventure packed with ingenious puzzles and expedition aplenty.
