          georgia had a lot of dreams. one of those being getting married by a lake side with flower petals covering the aisle and some devilishly handsome man waiting for her to bleed dry for the rest of his life. but bleed dry with love, of course. one of those other dreams, since high school, was to attend new york fashion week. it was one of those obscure, way out there dreams she had thought was too far to become a reality. yet there she was, sitting in one of the seats beside eliza at the elie saab show. she’d managed them a couple spots with some of her connections. sure, it was a dream, but it was also for work. not like wedding dresses were apart of her job, it was just an excuse to validate it. “i will never get over you doing this. i might just burst into flames.” she grabs eliza’s knee, giving it a far too tight squeeze. “thank you.” she looks at her with intense eyes. she’s honestly a bit giddy. the show was everything she’d ever dreamed of and more. being one of her favorite designers, she honestly didn’t even need to see the rest of the shows. “god i wish i made that kind of money to wear her shit.”

     after all of the heartbreak brought on by naivete, there was one thing eliza could always thank her first fiance for: bringing her to the fashion world of the new york area. every day there was a new trend. would she wake up and see that bell-bottoms were back in style? or maybe she’d go online and learn that gucci was literally making memes of clothes and people loved it. she never knew what to expect, and the wonder of it all had truly fueled her passion for fashion. watching the models before her strut the latest of elie saab’s eclectic taste reminds her of these things, and her blue hues are caught, starstruck and distracted from the notes she’s meant to be taking for her own research. the feeling of her plus-one’s nails digging into the flesh of her exposed knee is the only thing that pulls her back to reality – a jolt in her system that sends her careening back below the clouds. she looks to georgia, confused for a moment as she processes her friends words, and then lets out a soft snort. “ honey it’s the least i could do for everything you’ve done for me the past couple years, ” she gives georgia’s hand a squeeze, one much softer in comparison to the death grip the other has on her leg. “ right ? that’s a bit out of my league too. ” she sighs dreamily, cocking her head as she takes in the stunning silhouettes of elie’s fall bridal collection. “ but i suppose that’s what a sewing machine and a dozen yards of silk and satin are good for. ”

he knocks on the door and the last summer filled with memories washes over him. it’s not like he doesn’t talk to his best friend or that they haven’t seen each other in eleven years - but it sure feels like so. especially since he has been holding out from texting him to avoid spoiling the surprise, although it would’ve been nice to have an ally in all of this plot −especially since he wanted to do something significant for nilly− but now he was here and he hadn’t done any of those things and honestly did it matter? when alex opened the door while fixing his glasses and caleb was already giving him a big hug accompanied with an “i missed you, bro.” no time left to react. he just hoped alex didn’t have a heart attack.

     the gorillaz album bumping from his alexa is a nice accompaniment to his deafeningly silent thoughts and the blood rushing to his temples as he hangs his head off the back of his couch, but he almost misses the door because of it. he considers not getting up at all, just allowing whoever it was to leave ( it was probably the jehovah’s witnesses that show up every monday anyway ), but his feet are moving without his permission and he doesn’t have the mental fortitude right now to stop them. its just one of those days, it seems. a day where body does things and all alex’s conscious can do is watch from the sidelines with the expression of a baseball coach seeing his team strike out over and over: disappointed and unamused.

     there’s somethi– someone– on the other side of that door that sends his mind scrambling to get back inside though. caleb harris, the man who could probably be accurately described as alex’s best friend. it isn’t like they’ve been estranged from one another— sure, caleb has been away to chase his career, but so has alex, and they talk online pretty often, but person-to-person contact ? its been a hot second. or, well, it was until caleb was practically leaping onto him, leaving a dissociating alex just blinking in his wake. “ caleb ? ” is all he can manage, but a crook of a smile rises on his features, betraying the depersonalization he feels. it’s hard not to feel real around caleb harris.
