First Base Tapes: First Kiss Compilation
It all started when nine friends met working at Radio 1190 in Boulder. Their passion and dedication to the local scene led them to start First Base Tapes in October of last year. With three solo releases now under their belt, they have decided to put together a compilation. I caught up with Caden, one of the founding members, to discuss their new release.
Why did you decide to put together a compilation? What do you think the advantages are to a compilation over the traditional album format?
The First Base Tapes compilation was something we envisioned from the beginning as a great way to unite some of our favorite local artists in one package, creating something that’s greater than the sum of its parts. Variety is the key difference between the compilation and a traditional record, and the release will help to establish the identity and sound of the label. We’re a small operation, and not every artist involved with us has the means for a full length release yet, so to us this was the perfect way to showcase our current favorites.
Do you have a specific genre/region/style that your label tends to gravitate towards. Why or why not?
So far, we haven’t serviced anything outside the Denver-Boulder crescent, but we’re not limiting ourselves to that and we could possibly see more distant acts on our label in the future. Since we formed, we’ve put out a lo-fi rock record, an electronic record, a post-punk record, and we’re set to release a compilation tape on March 5th with a ton of variation in genre and style.
How did you choose the artists when it came to putting together this compilation? Did you have any specific criteria?
After our first few releases, we got some attention from friends and local artists who wanted their music released through us, and most of the tracks came to us this way. We didn’t have any criteria other than uniqueness and originality, and as the tracks started to roll in we knew that this release would be special and distinct.
What are some of advantages/disadvantages of working in the medium of tape as oppose to digital or vinyl.
Tapes have the potential to be highly personal and unique, and using cassettes gives us the opportunity to do the heavy work ourselves. Digital formats are so ubiquitous these days that it’s hard to say they’re personal, but regardless all of our cassettes come with free digital downloads. We’ve expressed interest in trying vinyl in the future, but no official plans have been made yet.
Is the process of putting a compilation together harder/easier then the traditional album format? Why or why not?
It’s significantly harder, because instead of assembling tracks from a single artist we assembled them from 18 separate ones. This makes the process a bit more complicated, but we’re very excited that it has all come together so nicely.
Tell me about some of the highlights from this compilation.
Scary Drugs and Wrinkle produced some of the best tracks for the compilation, and we’re proud to say that we recorded the tracks ourselves. A few of the tracks were recorded with more professional means, but most of them were done independently and completely from scratch. Even with that in mind, the tape as a whole sounds really great and consistent while also spanning lots of different genres and styles.
Where do you see First Base Tapes in a year? What is your goal with First Base Tapes?
Our goal with the label is to make friends, release great music, build relationships, help the local music scene, service national artists, establish a firm base in Denver, and possibly get live music space in the area. In a year we’d like to be doing bigger releases, perhaps doing vinyl releases, and hopefully be running our own shows.
You can purchased the tape at their release show on March 5th, and they will also sell tapes at Twist & Shout, Wax Trax and online through their Bandcamp page. Additionally,  you can check out First Base Tapes on their Facebook page and Bandcamp for more information on their upcoming releases.

Exhibit A: Chad Saxton, Dryer Plug Studios
In this series, I want to highlight the stories of people working in the local music scene who you may not know much about. In this first installment, I sat down with the owner and engineer of Dryer Plug Studios, Chad Saxton.
It all started in a small town east of Denver, where Chad grew up.  Chad started playing music at a young age, but he attributes his current music taste to his older brother. “ I would steal his punk rock CDs. I went to my first show with him...” This led Chad to start his own punk-rock project in High School. “I didn’t realize it until just recently that I created a DIY scene in this small town”. With very few venues in town, local bands did what they could to continue playing shows, including playing at a house demolition.
Around this time, Chad first found his love for recording. The house Chad grew up in had an unfinished basement. He made a deal with his dad that if he helped finish the basement, he could turn one of the rooms into a recording studio. The first band he recorded was his own, using a Shure SM57 microphone and an SM58 knockoff, a three-way car speaker wired in reverse and and a sub-woofer as his microphones. He used this set up to record his project to a 4-track tape recorder. Of these recordings, he said, “They were awesome in their own right, but also pretty terrible”.
After high school, Chad was unsure how to go about working in music, so he decided to work on an oil rig. Speaking about this time in his life, Chad said that It sucked and he was unhappy.
After his time on the oil rig, Chad went up to Fort Collins looking to find a way back into recording. He went to a recording studio known as The Blasting Room and begged for an internship. After several attempts at getting an internship, they finally gave him one. The work he did at the start of his internship was mostly janitorial. “Eventually they let me touch microphones..” and from there, he got a job as a staff engineer. When no one was in the studio, Chad was allowed to record his own projects.
Having doubts about a career in the recording industry, Chad left his job at The Blasting Room and got a job with Live Nation. With Live Nation, he worked as the operations manager at The Fillmore and Fiddler’s Green. While he was working for Live Nation, he occasionally recorded at home. This is where  Dryer Dryer Plug got its name “I had to stretch a cable through the house to the dryer plug to get enough power to power all the equipment”. As he was with Live Nation, Chad slowly realized that recording was what he loved to do; so after five years with Live Nation, he left.
A month after Chad left Live Nation, he got a job engineering and mixing all of the KBCO Studio C and channel 9.33 garage sessions for Clear Channel. Chad admitted that he was probably not qualified for the job when he started with Clear Channel, but it gave him the financial opportunity to open Dryer Plug Studios.
The lease was signed on Dryer Plug on October 1, 2013, making the space two years old last month. Within five days of signing the lease, Chad was moved in and working on recording.
The equipment at Dryer Plug Studios Chad has collected over time. “ I haven’t gotten rid of very many things in my life. I’ve kinda been collecting stuff for ages.” He got a huge break when one of his mentors sold Chad a lot of equipment for pennies on the dollar. “ I got about 50% of my gear from that deal.”
Chad still works with Clear Channel as his “main bread and butter gig”. Since it is a contract gig, he gets to spend a lot of time at Dryer Plug working on other projects. “...every day I wake up and think about this is my job, this is my job and its fucking amazing, people say their living the dream I’m living my dream”.
“I am thankful for every musician, every person, who has ever helped me. Anyone. Anyone who gives me money, I’m extremely grateful that people continue to give me money to do this. It blows my mind. I cant believe it sometimes. This is what I do.”
