Alex Danvers and alcohol wasnât how Lena had been intending to spend her evening. She thought she would have a few dances with Kara, perhaps flirt a little, maybe finally go in for the kiss she had been wanting since the moment they met, if things went well. But things hadnât gone well. They hadnât even finished their first dance, and now here she was with Alex sitting in Karaâs empty apartment, that even with the lights on and with Karaâs warm decorations everywhere felt so cold and so dark.
Lenaâs body tensed as Alex spoke to her about âsomething they could tryâ. She wrinkled her brow in concentration, paying close attention fo Alexâs words and feeling as if she had to be hearing things. âInterdimensional Extrapolator?â Lena repeated, slowly and carefully. Lena knew what those words meant, and she could piece together what it was, even if she wasnât entirely familiar.
âA device that creates passages between dimensions? Thatâs only ever been theorized, as has the idea of the multi-verseâŚâ She studied Alexâs face. They were dead serious. âAgent Danvers, you donât really work for the FBI, do you?â
Alex nodded, as Lena thought about it. They had a small amount of regret over sharing that information about the I.D.E., as the technology was clearly far more advanced than anything the FBI could come up with.
Considering this, and Lenaâs knowledge of alien technologies and engineering, Alex was not surprised that the L-Corp CEO had put two and two together. âYes, that device has been theorized, but I guess what Iâm saying is, it does exist. As does the multi-verse.â Alex said plainly, their eyes never leaving Lenaâs, even as they shook their head. Their secret was out.
âI work for a federal agency, that part is true. But I donât work for the FBI no. I actually work for the DEO, also known as the Department of Extra-Normal Operations. As an agency, Iâve been a part of several missions to take down rogue metahumans and organizations like Cadmus with Supergirlâs help.â They paused to take a breath, hearing Jâonnâs voice in their mind about oversharing not being the best course of action. âLong story short, we have the device in question, we still need to get it working, because Supergirl and the speedster are on another Earth, Earth-1.â

âA little bit,â Laurel laughed, âItâs a little nicer than my old office, bigger too - though I suppose that comes with setting up your own place,â She had never taken the plunge before, though sheâd consider it. As it turned out, all that she needed was a push.
The blonde was surprised at the offer and Laurel turned to look at them, âI mean if you donât mind?â She laughed a little. âItâs old paperwork really, I just have to move a lot of it into the filing cabinets. I just like to have on handâŚjust in case,â
Plus back up outfit in case she needed to rush out from her office, but sheâd marked that one. She couldnât rumble herself in her first day.
âI suppose so.â Alex agreed, getting a better view of the space that Laurel had made her own. âI love how spread out the office space is, Iâm sure youâll have things rolling in no time.â
Alex shook their head. âOf course I donât mind. I could use something to do and organization is kind of my obsession.â They said honestly. âItâs pragmatic of you to have lots of information on hand, should you need it.â

âNo worries.â Lucy sighed, coming closer now that it was safe. She knew Alex must be stressed out at this time and the last thing she wanted to do was to make it worse. âWeâll find her, Alex.â Lucy gently reassured, knowing if anyone could get themselves back home itâd be Kara.
âWeâre all working on trying to figure things out.â Maybe itâd be better to know that they werenât the only one who was concerning themselves with Kara. Lucy hoped that in getting Kara back, the speedster would come along with her and theyâd get an answer for what he did at the fundraiser.
âI know we will Lucy. Itâs just not hearing about how she is thatâs driving me crazy, you know?â Alex smiled, appreciating the fact that Lucy took the time to console her.
âI know, and I can never thank you all enough for working so hard to find Kara.â Alex said, smiling even wider now. âWhat do you hope to accomplish once we have Kara and Wally back?â

Vasquez had never seen anyone go as hard as Alex did for Kara. Most people loved their siblings, but Alex and Kara was something special. It was the kind of profound bond that seemed to put all others to shame. Vasquez had never managed to feel that strongly about anyone. She couldnât imagine what Alex was going through right now.
âSomeone oughta put you on firearm lockdown,â Vasquez answered with a hollow chuckle. Alex was usually the most put-together agent in the DEO, closely tied with Lucy. They must have been on edge to have become this grumpy. âThank God for the coffee machine, right?â Vasquez sighed, making her way over to her work station and pulling up some charts and co-ordinates.
âWhereâs that I.D.E.? I gotta get it working if weâre gonna get Kara and the Speedster back.â
Alex appreciated Vasquezâs help in their time of crisis. For the first time in what felt like years, they actually laughed. It was a stupid joke, but any type of humor was more than welcome as their stress continued to grow, threatening to explode over the edge.
âI suppose that would be a wise choice. But for now, Iâll try to keep in it my pants, just in a case.â Alex said slying, smiling as they drank caffeine, hoping that the caffeine could take over for the adrenaline coursing through their veins, if only for a few moments. âThank god indeed.â
Alex had to give Agent Vasquez a lot of credit. They never had to ask too many questions of her before any task, big or small, was accomplished. âThe I.D.E. is in storage, but we can set it up in the main bay, so thereâs enough space to transport Kara and Wally through when itâs setup.â Alex rubbed their face, feeling a bit awkward as they mentioned a few more players that agreed to work on the I.D.E also. âI hope you donât mind a few extra sets of hands. Clark, myself and Lena Luthor have agreed to offer their services so we can bring Kara and the speedster back safely.â They sipped coffee to cover their hesitation, unsure of just why they felt so nervous, since they were, along with Lucy, one of the higher ups in command with Jâonnâs absence. But here they were.

wrath-of-kon:
Conner couldnât help the flush of heat that traveled up his neck and spread over his cheeks, his head ducking as he muttered a quiet âOh, stop.â He waved the compliment away but flashed the agent unappreciative smile before turning his attention back to his shoes.Â
He nodded his head as his throat bobbed, he had gone over as much of the data as he had access too and with Alexâs wording he was sure his fears had been correct.Â
There had always been something a little off whenever he was in contact with- him-
âHave Clark or Kara said anything about the DEOâs analysis, I mean-â He sighed, shaking his head, âDo they know about?â he trailed off, an eyebrow raising as he looked at the agent.Â
He leaned back on his hands and took a deep breath, he genuinely felt for Alex. He had a vague understanding of what they were referencing, though his knowledge was limited, and he wished that he could help. He cursed himself for not being more attentive while he was trapped in Cadmusâ base.
âJeremiah, right?â He asked tentatively, his eyebrows furrowing as he gathered his resolve, âItâs not really the same, and I donât think anything anyone could say would be the right thing to say but, I think youâre a good person.âÂ
He cleared his throat and tilted his head, it was times like this that mad him feel so alien.Â
âYou stay here and help people instead of looking for your dad. I havenât seen a lot of humanity but I think most people would be selfish. You and Kara and Clark,â He shrugged, âyou make me want to deserve to be a part of the family.âÂ
Alex shook their head as Conner asked if Kara or Clark knew about the DNA analysis. âNo, they donât know much about that. We have their DNA on file though, and weâll speak to them if need be.â
It was times like these that Alex truly hated Cadmus and its entire operation. They had half a mind to stalk off to Lillian Luthorâs cell to demand more answers, but leaving Conner behind without the answers he sought just didnât seem fair.
âYes, his name is Jeremiah.â Alex hated that it felt so foreign to hear other people speak of their father, what with his mysterious death (faked by Cadmus) and discovering heâd been working both sides, albeit under duress...âThank you Conner.â They said quietly, swallowing slowly. Why couldnât the Danvers family stay together and in one piece for five minutes without danger or secrecy breaking up the family unit?
Alex smiled warmly as Conner spoke of how selfless themself, Kara and Clark were, despite their traumatic experiences. âIt gives us each a sense of purpose. And helping people stay safe and protected can sometimes make up for what other people we thought we could trust have done...at the very least, we can forget the past for a while.â Alex patted Connerâs shoulder comfortingly before stating, âYou are part of our family Conner. Regardless of what any test might say. Just know you can always count on any of us for advice anytime.â

Vasquez threw up her hands. Alex must have been jumpy. Couldnât really blame them with that freaking Speedster running around. Even Kara wasnât faster than those people, and they seemed to be able to get in and out of anywhere. âWhoa, Danvers. Chill out. Itâs just me.â She rubbed her knee where sheâd hit it on some boxes that definitely hadnât been there when sheâd stumbled out of here late last night, or early this morning, knocking them to the ground.Â
âAnd if we could not tell Jâonn this just happened, thatâd be swell,â she said with a low chuckle, letting out a groan as she straightened her leg again, fixed the boxes, and headed toward the desk with a much needed coffee. âI swear I mustâve slept a total of eight hours this whole week.âÂ
Alex blinked, dawning on them slowly that Agent Vasquez was standing in front of them. How many times had they pulled their gun on someone today? Their legs ached, but sleep wasnât an option with Kara and Wally still at large.
Alex smiled, pulling her gun down, dropping it to the floor tiredly as they picked it up carefully, tucking it back in its holster. âNo problem Vasquez. Iâm sorry. Iâm tired...and apparently more jumpy than I should be, with Kara missing. But if it makes you feel any better, youâre only the fourth person to have my gun in your face today. Not that it justifies my actions or anything.â Sighing as they ran a hand through their scalp, scratching tensely, Alex smirked at their friend. âDonât worry. This is completely off the books. The last thing I want to do is file the paperwork or talk to Jâonn about any of this.âÂ
As Vasquez walked towards the coffee machine, Alex followed, taking a mug full, downing half the black caffinated drink before placing it on a nearby countertop. âIâve probably done the same, honestly. Between prepping for the fundraiser and the aftermath, Iâm sure to collapse at any moment.â

Lena was emotional. She was actually emotional quite a bit of the time, but her mother had always taught her to bury it. With the mixture of alcohol and the prospect of the best friend sheâd been desperately wanting to kiss tonight vanishing, there wasnât much use in hiding her emotions tonight.
If anyone understood, it had to be Alex. Alex wasnât someone Lena knew very much about, but she knew enough to be certain that Alex would do anything for Kara, do anything to keep her safe. She listened intently as Alex spoke about the Speedster. If there was a way to track him down, she would be the first to offer her help.
âAlex, just tell me what you need and Iâll do it. I just want to find Kara,â she said with quiet but determined desperation.
Alex was relieved to see that Lena was having just as much trouble holding it together as they were. If there was anything to take out of this crisis situation, Alex had Lena to thank for caring as much for their younger sister as Alex had since the day the young thirteen year old girl had been welcomed into the Danvers household.
As Alex spoke, they noticed the way Lena was surely formulating a plan in her head, just as Alex had in coming to Karaâs apartment, hoping to find some sort of clue to help the DEO find Supergirl and Wally, bringing them both back safe.
Checking their phone, they noticed a message from Winn, telling them the DEO had lost the signal from Wallyâs suit. Theyâd had Kara hold onto a tracker during the fundraiser, especially after Barry Allen had blown through National City last year. The DEO hoped to be able to track speedsters to prevent any harm done to the cities citizens. As with just about any situation, Supergirl was at its center, unafraid to put herself at risk for others. Supergirl was the perfect hero.
âWell, there is something we could try. Do you know anything about how to work an Interdimensional Extrapolater to program in locations outside of our universe?â Although they werenât 100% certain of it yet, Alex could tell that Kara was nowhere in National City. And considering how long it had been dealing with her radio silence, Alex had to assume her sister wasnât somewhere the DEO could reach easily.
Sheâs not dead, Alex told themself again. Just missing. Their stomach flipped again, as their hand shakily let the glass down on the coffee table. Kara was okay, she always perservered. Just hold on a little longer Kara, Alex thought, wishing in this moment that Kara could telepathically communicate with them, to let them both know things were getting done to rescue Kara and Wally, wherever they were.

It was a little strange being alone with Alex. They had only ever met briefly spent time together, and even then it was always when Kara was around. Lena didnât know what to make of the two of them, but she was glad her initial thought that the pair had been dating when she had found Alex in Karaâs apartment all those weeks ago had been quickly quietened.
It comforted her to know that the FBI already had a name for the Speedster who had attacked the fundraiser. That was a start. It was better than being utterly and completely in the dark. They clearly knew more about the speedster than Lena ever could, and that meant they could figure out how to find him, how to approach him. But her thoughts got the better of her and she spoke out. âHow do you even find or catch someone like that? He moves so fastâŚâ
Lena just wanted the dozens of text messages to Karaâs phone to be answered, for her enthusiastic, over-emoji using response to come through and let them know she was safe. Alexâs alcoholic offering was more than welcome and Lena took a long swig of it. She gave Alex a curious look at the question. âL-Corp has a number of sattelites and equipment that can scan hard to reach locations, but it really depends what youâre asking. I realise now isnât the time for boasting, but I was top of my class at MIT for a reason.â
Alex nodded, completely understanding where Lena was coming from. âItâs a challenge, especially if Supergirl or Superman canât catch them as easily as they would another alien enemy in National City. But we do have ways of figuring out his trajetory, even if the speed is difficult to keep up with.â
Alex was keen to observe the way that Lena looked distressed over Karaâs absence. They were unsure of what exactly to tell her, beyond the fact that Kara was away on a story. Because how could you explain the rest of the information, when they were sure Kara hadnât officially told Lena she was Supergirl, and therefore an alien living on earth.
âWell, the reason why Iâm asking is we canât seem to track the metahuman as well as expected. Because knowing Wallyâs location would certainly help....the FBI find Kara.â They blamed the liquor for the tidbit of information slipping out. Alex felt as though Lena deserved to know that Kara was lost; especially because holding onto the burden with Clark and the DEOâs help was becoming too much.

âWhoa, hey.â Lucy, mildly startled, put a hand up. âI didnât break any expensive lab equipment, promise.â While still getting used to the new DEO base, she wasnât a complete fumbling idiot. Although, a quiet big room does make for a nice place with a loud echo once something fell.
âAny reason for being jumpy today?â The DEO did have its share of infiltrationâkind of embarrassing, actually. So Alex had a reasonable explanation for why they were so jumpy, but it wasnât like there were any whispers of threats to the base. Then again, Hank Henshaw was still at large.
âSorry Lucy, I didnât see you there.â Alex said, quickly lowering their piece, tucking it in their holster. âAnd donât worry, youâre probably one of the few people that I can trust with the more expensive lab equipment.â
âI guess Iâm just hyped up from knife practice, and the fact that Supergirl and the metahuman have been missing for so long.â It was truly all consuming that her sister was lost, with no known location, leaving Alex distracted and less on their game than ususual.

âIt does help you heal faster, yes. But only when the sun is out at itâs highest.â Alex was weary of giving too much information away, especially since they werenât sure if  Conner had spoken to Clark just yet about his true heritage.
âThatâs good that youâre making good on doing research during your time here.â  Alex said, smiling softly. âAnd I wouldnât be surprised Conner. Youâve proven to be quite strong and resilent during the testing process.âÂ
Their legs crossed as Conner hit the nail on the head, questioning his DNA. âThe DEO might have strong idea of where your genetic makeup lies. But you might not like it. Plus, the people you want to meet most might not be reachable if you want answers. I know the feeling, since my own father couldnât be farther away from me.â Oh no. Alex realized she might slip in the real truth just because they longed so much to get answers about Jeremiahâs Cadmus connections, and why he left them.Â

Conner huffed as he was lifted into the bed but figured that unless he was willing to go toe to toe with an angry Danvers sister and an angry martian it was in his best interest to go along with Alex willingly.
Still, his foot felt fine and if all of the tests the DEO had done on him were any indication it was unlikely that he was in any real danger, well, at any time really.
Perks of his pseudo-Kryptonian-ness.
But, with the way Alex was watching him he was sure that he would be sitting here for a while and that this incident would inevitably result in more testing, especially with how little sunlight he was getting in the DEO.
He clicked his tongue as he waited for one of the DEO physicians to arrive, the silence between himself and the older agent thick. âYou know this wouldnât really be necessary if I was allowed to see the sun. Thatâs how the powers work right? Radiation from the yellow sun?â Â He asked hesitantly.
âSome of the agents think that I could be as strong as Superman when I get older.â He said with more confidence. A bright smile over taking his features as he tilted his head to the side, âIâm not sure if thatâs true or anything but Iâve been reading a lot of the âSuperâ files,â He said with air quotes, âbut theyâre not really all that helpful, all things considered.â
He shrugged but bit the inside of his cheek, the files were nice but he couldnât help but feel even more disconnected from the super-cousins the more he read, not to mention more than a little disconcerted with the various pictures of a younger Clark Kent.
He shuddered just thinking about it, but there was more to it, something he just couldnât keep his mind off of.
âSo,â he trailed off in a lame attempt to be casual, âdoes the DEO have any idea where the human portions of my DNA came from?â

As soon as Alex had touched them, they had pulled away. Part of Lena wanted to beg them to come back, but she knew why they had done it. They were a trained FBI agent, and they had sensed her body tense at the initial contact. âItâs ok,â she wanted to say, 'Iâm just not used to it,â but the moment had passed.
âWallyâŚâ Lena repeated the name. He wasnât just some faceless person in a mask. He was a person. Like Corbin had been, except he had seemed young, and so uncertain. What had she done to him? What had Lex done? âHeâs got a name. Heâs a victim, just like so many people my mother and brother have touched. My family has so many debts to pay.â But he also was potentially dangerous, like Alex had said.
âAlex,â she said after a long pause, the name feeling unusual but welcome on her lips. âIâm sorry. Iâll help him in whatever way I can.â If Alex trusted that Kara was safe, Lena had to trust that too. âDoes Kara even drink?â Lena asked, finding it in her to give a hollow chuckle after a moment. âBecause I feel like something strong right now. Itâs safe to say any buzz I had from the champagne is long gone.â Right now, she just wanted something to help keep her calm.
Alex could tell that Lena might have wanted the intimate moment to last a bit more, but since she didnât say anything otherwise, they simply remembered that Lena might want some more physically comfort in another situation.
âHe does. And Wally seemed more afraid than dangerous during the fundraiser. But we will bring him in to question his motives, and to make sure heâs alright. We just have to find him and Kara first.â Alex discovered they paced automatically when worried about their sister.
âDonât apologize for anything Lena.â As their hand traced their face, Alex ruminated over how much to tell her sisterâs close friend, and what help the DEO actually needed to bring back Supergirl and Wally West. They smiled as Lena asked if Kara drank. âIn certain situations, she does. Itâs quite adorable to watch actually.â Alex said, laughing along with the L-Corp CEO. âIâve got whisky in the cabinet in the corner, Karaâs always nice about keeping it in stock for me.â Of course, next to that was plenty of her favorite alien wines and hard liquors, but Alex made sure to tell the difference as she grabbed two glasses and the whisky decanter, pour the glasses half full. âHere you are, Lena.â They knocked back half their glass, enjoying the burn as an idea sprung to mind. âHow are you about finding hard to reach locations? Where satelite signals canât normally locate people?â

clarkofkrypton:
Love wasnât a competition, but if there had ever been a person in the world who loved Kara as much as Alex did, it would have been Clark. The two of them were her family, Alex the family she had found on Earth and Clark the family who came from home. They were the last Kryptonians, only having each other to share their home planet and its stories with. âI know,â he agreed. âSheâs not just the strongest person I know, but the kindest and bravest. She doesnât deserve this. But sheâll have both of us right here for her when she comes home.â
In truth, he hadnât been asking about the nitrogen. Clarkâs concerns were over something so much bigger. It seemed as though Conner, in spite of everything that had been done to him, was a good person. What would happen if someone who wasnât a good person got Clark and Karaâs powers? Confronting that reality face to face, Kara going missing at the same time⌠It was all so overwhelming.
Alex seemed to feel the same way, because they wrapped their arms around him. Clark held them close. Every movement he made had to be so careful. Like Kara, he could never squeeze Alex or Lois or anyone he loved as closely or as tightly as he really wanted to, but he held them all the same, as tightly as he could allow without causing harm. âKara and I are so lucky to have you,â he said softly into her shoulder.
Alex wiped the tears they didnât realize had fallen from their face, still tucked inside Clarkâs strong shoulders. They didnât realize how badly they needed to hold onto someone and let go. âKaraâs stronger than she realizes sometimes.â They knew Clark would understand Alex didnât mean that in the physical sense.
Pulling back slowly, they evaluated Clarkâs expressions. He seemed torn in two places, holding concern for Kara and Conner at the same time. Clark wasnât ususally one to show that, in his body language or voice. It made Alex feel relieved that they werenât the only one feeling under stress.
The comforting hug was perfect. They wouldnât have cared if Clark had squeezed a bit too hard, although it was always reassuring when Kara and Kal restrained their strength in moments like these. âThat means so much Clark.â Leaning back to face the taller man,  Alex immediately had a question for him. âHave you heard from Kara at all? Our comms havenât picked up anything more than static and silence since she disappeared with Wally West.â
