”In the city of the dead, I lay stuck inside my bed. The house burns down around me.”

There was smoke. Everywhere. Why was their smoke? And why was it so strong?

”The language of the lost pouring from their open mouths… Nobody can hear a thing.”

“Hello?” Reina coughed. And she coughed again, and again. Where had her family gone? Everyone was too quiet. And the house was on fire. Why was the house on fire?

“Suddenly, I’m breathing in the smoke. Surrounded by the bodies.”

Reina moved towards the common area. And- The ground was sticky. And red. And it smelled like iron. Sickeningly so. She could barely see through the smoke, but everyone was on the ground. She tried to move further, but-

What was tugging her back? And what was on her wrists?

“As I’m tugging on my chains, I’ll be swallowed by the flames. “Freedom” dripping from the sink.”

They’d chained her. Reina was somehow alive, but they’d chained her in a burning house. And her family was dead. Some slaughtered, some half-eaten, others decapitated — her brother’s head was close enough to kick.

“This isn’t- Wh- I- NO!” She screamed. And cried. And pulled. And pulled, and pulled, until her wrists hurt. But she kept tugging, and tugging, and tugging, until the floor gave out (mostly because the fire weakened it) and she ran.

She was out of that burning house. But at what cost? Her family was dead, and she had nowhere else to go. The nearest village would take weeks, maybe even months to get to.

…where to now?
