Last friday, i coincidentally found on Tumblr an image from Masamune Shirow that reminded me of how awesome it was to do line work. despite the digital line works i did lately, i haven't done a real sketch on paper from more than five years now, and it's starting to be a regret. yesterday, i decided to do something about it. i bought everything back, from pencils to inking pen and erasers. i am now equipped. a first sloppy test for tonight.

sketch derived of the painted version. sketching does bring a lot of challenges that i had left aside: you just can't fake or drown anything in brush strokes. you need to "design" each shapes, there's no alternative. it makes me think, design wise. i guess it's a good thing.

smudge sketch done with the same displacement technique explained on previous post. skyscrapers are dome by simply raising the top or lowering it according to taste and design balance. apart from a few lines, it's all smudge based.
