The first time I realized someone was transsexual

(Names changed for privacy) This is really, more for me then anything else. It happened more then ten years ago, and I've never really looked at my actions and reactions towards this individual. I think it's time for me to do that now. ... I was 14 years old when I met James. He was hot like burning and I had a huge crush on him. He was older then me, already in high school, and I think that added a great deal to his appeal. He was very sweet and never drew attention to my very obvious crush. Going so far as to introduce me to his girlfriend in a way that made it clear he was out of bounds, but never verbally rejecting my feelings. He was, in a word, awesome. It was almost a year later when his mother had broken her arm. My mother being the kind neighbor that she was sent me over to help with chores while James was at his job. His mother was very nice, and had me help her make cookies as a treat for helping fold and put away laundry. When they were in the oven, she had asked me to bring a basket up to her room. There I met Julia. Julia was the oldest daughter of a conservative Baptist family. She went to a private Christian academy for her elementary school, and part of her middle school. She did not want to be a girl. A divorce from a verbally abusive husband, and several talks with pastors and therapist later, James was born. His mother told me this when I asked about the girl in the pictures I saw on her dresser. I was shocked. I knew what a cross dresser was (thank you Bird Cage), but I never knew that you could change genders. I didn't even think it was an option. His mother was kind, and answered my questions. I already understood his attraction to females as I had a lesbian cousin with whom I was very close, but it was very hard for me to wrap my head around. Why would you WANT to be a boy? The next time I saw him, he was sitting on the steps to his apartment, and I asked him that. Why? His reasons were, and still are, his own. For the next few weeks, it was a little awkward. I was unsure how to act. The only thing I was sure of was his name. To me, he was James. Looking back I'm sure I made mistakes that hurt him, and I'm also sure that he had the heart of a saint, because he never stopped being my friend. He taught me so much about acceptance, and for that I am extremely grateful.
