I like that these digital pieces allow me to work through/out the chaos in my head when I'm unable to be in studio. I'm not sure what will make it into my handmade collages when I finally get back to them but I'm slowly learning to enjoy this phase of uncertainty (in spite of the mounting anxiety I've been experiencing all year). Thank you for doing the work and naming those unaccompanied women who braved the unknown in search of something better. Years later many of us are still confronted by that same fork in the road. "and by night, despite grounding" 2018 (from the Cusp series) Fun fact: I've been making work in this series in groups of threes (for a couple of reasons but mostly just to give myself the space/time to work out kinks as I go along). So within each group, the titles are all connected and read as one sentence. And while I've only completed two groups so far, I've also realized that the final pieces of both groups were actually the first to be completed. I've been working backwards the whole time lol! #DominiqueHunter #GuyaneseArtist #Collage #MixedMedia #Art

So happy to announce that my work has been published in Issue 11 of the Caribbean Review of Gender Studies! Thrilled (and intimidated) to be sharing this space with so many brilliant thinkers! On the cover of this edition is my work from the Caribbean Linked IV residency in Aruba and inside is my text contribution (which is more like an extended artist statement that takes into consideration the importance of gender relations and policy making). Coming out of my impromptu social media hiatus to say thank you to a new collector for giving this piece a new permanent home. It's the best feeling in the world to know that your work is appreciated (this series in particular as it chronicles my experiences of trying to stay sane and keep my practice going in a less than ideal space). This piece and two others were sent up for my Art Basel Miami debut in December of last year and the response has been nothing short of amazing. A huge thank you to the other collectors of my work. Can't wait to share the ones I'm currently finishing up! Back in about 2 weeks 💛

So grateful for the invitation to present at this year's Queen's College Student Conference. Equally grateful to have shared the platform with these talented folks. Congratulations to the planning committee and all of the volunteers who made the two-day event an even bigger success than the previous year. Deeply saddened that it ended on such a sombre note. Got a couple of things cooking but this one excites me most. After about 4 years I'm finally able to give this project the attention it deserves. A huge part of the work I've been doing over the past few years has involved examining the role of television and print media in how black women's bodies are represented (or not, in some cases). But how often do we (black women) check our own complicity in how those stereotypes about our bodies are perpetuated? Years ago, my own encounter with an older woman, who was a complete stranger at that point, made me realize that sometimes we do just as much damage (if not more) within our own community than any ad could ever do. #wip

On Sunday, December 31 my final column for the Sunday Chronicle was published. After two years of writing I'm redirecting my energies to my studio practice. So grateful to my editors for pretty much giving me free rein to write about anything (art related) and trusting me to follow through every week. I've met some amazing people along this journey and managed to create a space for them to share their ideas/work. It's so important that these engagements continue and for that reason I will always remain open to writing the occasional article for their consideration. Wishing you all a fulfilling year ahead! 💛
