Are doctor’s recommending the use of Diabetic apps?  Do doctor’s really think Diabetic apps are useful and what about them do patients find most useful? This news release addresses the overwhelming number of applications built to serve a medical need.  The physicans interviewed for the article stated that at most of the 200,000 applications, they recommend maybe 50.  It is important that healthcare providers evaluate the validity of the application by asking questions like;  Does the app reinforce medical truths that we already know? Is the app reinforcing proven treatments in medicine to help empower patients to stick to these proven treatments? Other things to think about: Who made the app? Has it been tested? Is it endorsed by a medical society and what is that society’s reputation? Apps that are not endorsed by a recognized or certified entity may not be reliable.

This article provides a comparison of apps like Glooko, SiDiary, Glucose Buddy and OnTrack.  The  article also explains that patients don’t mind checking their blood sugar, however they find it difficult to write it down.  The goal of using smartphone apps is to effectively manage diabetes by improving glycemic control and prevent further complications.  Keeping a record of your blood sugar levels help to identify patterns of blood sugar levels that are too high or too low. A record of your blood sugars also helps your healthcare team evaluate the effectiveness of your diabetes medications.  There are other articles within the diabetic connect website that specifically discuss diabetic app usage.  The great thing is that there are available areas for discussion after each article and on the main page of the website.

Finally a developer of Diabetes products that is actually Diabetic!  What better way to determine the app that would work better for you than to have feedback from someone that has actually used it?  Gary Scheiner, Clinical Director of Integrated Diabetes Services, known as the MacGyver of diabetes products, has lived with type I Diabetes for more than 30 years. He tries out new products before recommending them to patients. “It’s important to see new products from the user’s point of view, not just from the [health-care practitioner’s] side of things.” The article describes two Diabetes apps, the first being, DietSensor, the first nutritional coaching app to help better manage chronic conditions like diabetes. This app utilizes a tiny molecular sensor that scans the cells of homogeneous foods for macronutrients such as carbs, fat, protein, and calories through your smartphone.  The app has access to a database of over 600,000 foods to effectively calculate intake even before eating, so that the person can determine how much they can eat, if at all.  The mySugr mobile app introduces a new feature called mySugr Coaching that allows people living with diabetes using intensive insulin therapy access to personalized diabetes education. Users define long-term goals, such as losing weight, decreasing blood glucose levels, or even something like finishing a triathlon. Users work with their coach to attain specific goals. This is the interactivity that has been determined to be necessary for Diabetic apps to be effective in assisting Diabetics to better manage their disease.

Diabetes apps
My name is Jennifer Tyler and I have been a nurse for 22 years.  I am currently taking a communications class at ODU and in fulfilling one of the requirements have created this page in hopes of acquiring and sharing more information about the impact of electronic applications on Diabetes management.  One of the departments that I supervise is health education and we are constantly exploring innovative ways to improve Diabetes self management for our patients.
Diabetes is an epidemic, especially on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where I live.  We have one of the highest incidences of Diabetes in the state.  The Eastern Shore is very rural and is classified as a known food desert by the USDA, meaning there is limited access to fresh, healthy foods which are necessary for proper control of Diabetes.  There have been many developments especially in technology to aide Diabetics in being more aware of their lifestyle habits.  I plan to explore several types of applications, the benefits of each application and an evaluation of  the applications that produce better outcomes.
