Wednesday 09 September 2020; Night. A high fae walks into your bar. You notice him immediately, almost as though you are being drawn to him deliberately. He sits down, ordering a drink as he eyes you surreptitiously. The rank on his wrist says Eight but you know instinctively he outranks you in every way that matters to your species.

As you place his drink in front of him he asks in a calm voice, “Are you the son of Song?” You know immediately this is about your father.

Hanbyeol’s chin tilts upwards slightly as the man sits down, the hairs at the back of his neck rising. Something about this, he can tell, bodes poorly - and the minute the man speaks, he knows he’s been proven right. Usually Hanbyeol is very good at keeping his composure (little tends to surprise him these days with the state of this realm) but this time he reacts - his eyes narrow, and his nostrils flare, and he is instantly on edge.

“Who’s asking?” He asks sharply, his voice curt. No one mentions his parents’ names these days, and Hanbyeol is never sure if it’s a good thing or not. Now, he thinks he’s leaning towards the latter. “Or- perhaps this is a better question: Why would anyone need to know?”

strengths  :

charm  —  if hanbyeol is anything, he’s charming, and he has been ever since he was young and wanted to worm his way out of trouble in the academy. to date, he still considers it his greatest asset - honey rather than vinegar, after all, and it’s gotten him more knowledge than he’d ever have gotten otherwise.

knife work  —  hanbyeol is good at being a rather slippery person - he doesn’t actively enjoy a fight, after all - but every so often he gets caught up in something he’d rather not be involved in. he can usually deal enough damage to get away from most issues, and he carries a surprising amount of sneaky weaponry for someone who’s not a big fan of combat.

weaknesses :

strength  —  for all that hanbyeol is good at getting away from people, if he’s caught, he’s likely to be in a bad situation. he certainly has no brute strength to speak of, and if, for whatever reason, he didn’t have his weapons, he’d be rather out of luck. it’s why he strives to avoid such situations as much as possible.

emotional attachments — while hanbyeol thinks he’s rather good at reading people and having them open up to him, it doesn’t quite work as well in the opposite direction. there are few people he truly feels the need to make real friends with, less who he wants to share his thoughts with. as far as he’s concerned, the less people who know him well, the better. it’s for their own safety as much as it is for his, he reckons.

Anton took a sip from his drink, listening to the bartender with half an ear as his gaze continued to wander. As he opened his mouth to reply he finally looked at the other and realized his mistake. Medium length hair, a straight nose, pointed ears, a quick glance at the wrist and - well, it was covered but… wasn’t that a clue in and of itself?

The Strongarm smiled though there was no joy in it. “You, I believe,” he said cautiously, his tone light enough not to arouse interest in those nearby. “I have a few questions - and a few coins - and I was hoping you had the answers.” He took another sip from his drink, studying the other man’s features carefully as he let his words sink in.

This was exactly why the Club hated missions like these. He’d been an excellent assassin, was a great shadow, but was certainly not and would never be a great spy. The intricacies infiltration and the intelligence weeding out information required were simply beyond him. He was no fool he was just too blunt and impatient for this work. 

Hanbyeol smiled wider.

“I see,” he said simply, returning the bar rag to where it belonged. He paused for a beat - more for the suspense, more to see how this man would react than any particular reason, before he hummed in thought. “Pray tell, what would you like to ask me? Or-” His gaze shifted towards a side corridor, another door just within site. “Or would you prefer to perhaps discuss in private?”

It wasn’t difficult to tell that this fresh face would be able to snap him into pieces, bone by bone if he chose to, but Hanbyeol had dealt with larger and nastier people before. Besides, should they choose to leave the protection of a crowd, he had... Other means to protect himself in the side rooms if need be.

Beyond that, the newcomer seemed more cautious than he seemed particularly harmful. This wasn’t something he was used to doing, and Hanbyeol could tell. It was only an added bonus - he might be able to work more than a few coins out of him if he played his cards right.

Monday 27 July 2020; 22:40. You chose to speak to the woman! The drink and the cheering from her fellows made her forget herself. Over the course of the next thirty minutes you manage to piece together some facts she let slip in her haze. She is an Earth Elementalist and she used her powers to kill the men that morning. At one point she also says ‘the girl’ which leads you to believe it was actually three men and a girl, or two men and a girl that perished at the elementalist’s hands.

Her and her friends leave for the brothels once they’re sufficiently boozed up, with the woman paying for all their drinks. This action, and the fact she skirted around the reason for the fight, lead you to believe this woman was hired to kill one or all of the people involved.

The news that Hanbyeol had managed to glean from her had been... Interesting, to say the least. Surprising probably wasn’t the right word - there was always plenty going on in the realm, most of it squirrelled away and out of sight to the general populace - but this information certainly had his curiosity piqued. For better or for worse, he was now intrigued. He’d found a new lead, and when Hanbyeol found a lead, he followed it.

But that was for later - for now, he was still a bartender, and for now, he’d think about what his next steps were. With a barely noticeable spring to his step, he returned to the bar, absently tugging back a copy of The Deck that a customer must have left behind. Absently, he skimmed the contents, pouring a glass of water for himself. Shortly after, however, he paused at the tap, the flow of water coming to a stop as an eyebrow raised. Eyes scanned the article, noting the names and the circumstance, and, with over a century of experience in doing so, he rather quickly put two and two together.

Tuesday 28 July 2020; 21:40 Diamond Territory; Club V

A mission. Anton had finally been given a mission after weeks of silence from the higher ups, and it had to be information gathering assignment. Dissatisfaction and disappoint coursed through the Club’s veins as he paid his cover charge for Club V, entering without a problem. Part of him knew it was his own fault for being unable to move past his issue with blood, but another louder part of his brain whispered about how useless he was to the resistance. He’d failed them and now? He was little better than errand boy.

The Strongarm wove his way through the crowd easily, those he accidentally bumped into rebounding off him like they’d hit stone. Once he reached the bar he took a seat at the end, his back to the wall as he waved down the bartender. After Anton ordered his beer the man allowed his eyes to roam the nightclub, looking for one man in particular.

Though he’d never visited the Club V owner personally, the resistance had been in contact with him a handful of times. They sent different agents whenever they needed information, the Jack being too high ranked to trust with their intentions nor the names and faces of their members. Tonight, Anton needed sought the whereabouts and routines of Heart Queen who’d caught the resistance’s eye. Her reputation for brutality towards lowrankers was founded in fact, and they intended to use her to send a message.

Club V never had a want for activity, and Hanbyeol had always considered it a bit of a blessing. When he’d originally purchased the establishment, he hadn’t been questioned, but those started trickling in once other highrankers realised that he planned on taking an active part in running the place, right down to manning the bar if need be. He hadn’t minded - they could think what they liked. He knew that the best information came from lips loosened with drink, and that was all that mattered.

Tonight, he was doing exactly that - manning the bar - and it didn’t take long for the newcomer to catch his eye. How could he not? The man was all but parting the crowd as he waded through it, and Hanbyeol bit back a grin as he arrived to take a seat right in front of him, deft hands pouring the requested drink. The man’s eyes were roaming the room still as Hanbyeol slid his beer over, and he hummed, raising a brow.

Interesting - so this person sought him.

“Looking for someone?” He asked smoothly, surreptitiously tugging a sleeve a little lower over his wrist. “Or perhaps you’re waiting for someone. If you know who it is, I might be able to be of assistance,” he offered. The words were familiar on his tongue, and the easy, welcoming smile he gave the man was well-practiced.

Monday 27 July 2020; 22:00. You’re in Club V when you overhear something that never should’ve been spoken out loud. The breath of the speaker is thick with berry wine as she tells the elaborate story of a fight she won that morning: a fight that ended in death of three men. She brags how easy it was to overpower them, how strong her control over the earth is.

She seems like an Academy graduate turned mercenary, which should make her a Diamond but you’re not quite sure since she’s dressed like a Club. Lies are prevalent in Kadeu, but your experienced ears hear overtures of truth in her words.

Hanbyeol was always listening.

He wasn’t always at the club though - he owned it, that much was true, but he would be too recognisable if he was there day in and day out. Tonight, however, happened to be one such night that he was indeed present.

He was manning the bar. The position was a little, or perhaps a lot, below him, but his hair fell over the tips of his ears (which were free of jewellery for the night) and his sleeves were long, easily covering up his rank. He wore a no-frills outfit, and while it probably should have been alarming how much people relied on physical features as such to determine other people, it was in his favour for the night. Few of the lower rankers would be able to tell who he was. If he caught anything interest, it would be far easier to slip in.

And what he’d just heard had certainly been interesting.

Smoothly, he tossed the spare flannel he’d been using over to the actual bartender, who looked vaguely terrified to be in his presence. He ignored the expression for now, exiting the bar through the back and re-entering through the front. It didn’t take long for him to work his way through a throng of people, face carefully set into an easy grin as he slipped in to take a seat at the woman of interest’s table.

“May I?”

hanbyeol had a good childhood for sure - he was only child, and a wanted and waited-for child at that, so his parents were heavily involved and had him wanting for nothing, both in the fae realm and otherwise. a pivotal moment in his childhood was their initial move and his start at the academy, and he misses their presence sorely - he has great-great-grandparents alive and he knows his parents’ time was cut short. if it were possible, he would definitely relive his childhood.

byeol gets by, in his opinion, pretty okay. it’s true that he seems to catch a case of the sniffles often enough that it’s a little alarming, and that he seems to be a lightning rod for all the various germs that like to come through his fine (perhaps not) establishment, but... well, he’s still alive. he does go to get checked out semi-often - annually if not semi-annually - but he’s been lucky enough so far to have not been seriously, dangerously ill very often.

hanbyeol is definitely smart. it’s hard to say he isn’t, and it’s hard for anyone to deny it - he wouldn’t have been able to climb diamond ranks the way he did without at least a modicum of intelligence. plenty of his smarts are school taught indeed, given he was a student at the academy, but he likes to think that the way he conducts his work is a skill that he’s honed on his own. he doesn’t know that he’s the smartest person in any room (especially in diamond territory), but he thinks he knows enough to get by.

autumn, through and through, although summer tends to lead to looser lips in his experience. hanbyeol personally likes autumn though - it’s cool and crisp enough to be pleasant, to be tolerable and fresh and different and new, but not quite cold enough yet to be as cumbersome as winter is.

Hanbyeol absolutely values companionship, but he values a network equally as much. He’s constantly with people just by nature of what he does, and he has to actively work at keeping track of all the people he meets as well as what they have for him and what they want. He doesn’t always aim to become friends with the people he sees, but he usually tries for some kind of acquaintanceship, just to have the reference for future yes.

Despite all this, however, Hanbyeol has only a handful of close friends, and fewer yet who are likely to have peeled back every layer of his.

Hanbyeol likes to think of himself as relatively stable and, in all honesty, he wouldn’t be far off the mark. Assuming he does have issues, they certainly haven’t affected him enough yet for him to notice it. He’s not been diagnosed with anything and has no reason or desire to see a psychologist in his opinion, especially since they tend to be more concerned with human matters as is. It’s certainly possible that therapy wouldn’t go amiss but Hanbyeol has no current plans to attend any such meeting.

Most wouldn’t expect Hanbyeol to be particularly good at chess - he’s rarely one to sit still - but he is regardless. Hanbyeol is particularly strategic in general, and is good at visualising the moves he needs to make and the pieces of information that he needs to get what he wants. He sees no reason to hide this penchant of his, but he’s not quite out participating in tournaments either.
