buck heard 'everything that matters is in texas' and it translated to 'eddie doesn't need you' and that is what devastated him. thinking his presence in eddie's life didn't make a difference to him. which is not the case, as we know, but buck stinks of rejection sensitivity dysphoria and the moment he feels unwanted he's immediately triggered to being a child born for spare parts, thrown away once his usefulness expired, then thrown away like a used toy whose novelty has expired by every single partner he's had since. that wound runs deep. and the fact that he managed to pull himself out of his own pain to do one last, huge thing to ease eddie's stress is a testament to his growth and his big fat stupid heart, and how desperately he just wants to do good for others. it's why he became a firefighter. to be someone who matters. the help that comes at the eleventh hour, when all hope is lost. to be important, to anyone. and above all that, he just wants to be somebody's first choice. favorite choice. favorite person. and i sincerely hope that person is eddie because otherwise what the fuck are we doing here
