speaking of my wips, here's the half finished outline of the SUPER high concept far future sci fi au where hannibal's the king of a hivemind alien species and Will lives in and was born in the human settlement on that planet and hannibal basically does an 'arranged marriage' kinda thing only it's 'arranged mates' and coerces Will into unknowingly slowly eradicate humanity on the planet

general plot

Humanity went extinct on earth three thousand years ago as a result of climate change and nuclear apocalypse and the remaining population left earth and now has colonies on hundreds and hundreds of planets throughout the universe and sharing planets with the native alien species. Most species allow human colonists to live mostly free lives, but still regulating their technological advances and pollution output/weapons technologies and governmental organization. There are strict policies and rules to prevent humanity from causing climate collapse and nuclear war again, and each human is normally chipped and tracked from birth to monitor and track.

On the planet that Will was born, an immortal insectoid and cephalopodic eldtrich species is the dominant species and is ruled by Hannibal, who’s ruled for two thousand years so far. Hannibal’s family has ruled for twelve thousand years total, but had a gap before Hannibal ascended to the throne of about four thousand years of different families. The previous kings had hated humanity and wanted to eradicate them from the planet, and saw them as a ‘plague’ on their world. Since Hannibal took the throne, he’s instituted a top secret breeding program that attempts to breed his species and humans together and to try and recreate the mating bond that his own species has with each other and observe the children that are born from the couplings.

Hannibal has always had an affinity for humans, and is still un mated at his age (he’s ten thousand years old) and is under pressure to find a suitable mate. He’s been watching Will for years and knows of his empathy quirk and is extremely curious about it would manifest in children of Hannibal’s species. So, Hannibal whisks Will away from human society and tries to integrate him into alien society and teach him the culture and way of governing since he’s going to be his mate and will need to be entrenched in Hannibal’s culture.

Until halfway through the fic, Will isn’t aware of Hannibal’s ultimate goal: to assimilate every human in this particular colony into their hivemind and the ‘universal consciousness’ to achieve true unity and understanding. The plan has been in place since the day humans arrived there three thousand years ago, and the human population is about halfway assimilated at the time when Will agrees to be Hannibal’s mate. To assimilate them and not raise suspicion, they eat the brains of humans and replace them with a synthetic created one that mimics human personality and thought so nobody would be the wiser. At that point, half of all the humans on the planet are so called ‘zombies’ and the human government is only partially aware. All they know is that the plan is ongoing, but don’t have an exact number of ‘zombies’ that exist among them.

Will’s presence in the alien government is poorly received at first, mostly from Chilton and Bedelia. But when Chilton confronts Will about being human and being allowed into this society, Will uses his empathy gift to absolutely read Chilton to filth and make him cry and run from the room. The rest of the government officials immediately change their tune and begin to treat Will like a circus act and quickly overwhelm him. Bedelia becomes very interested in him, but is also extremely jealous because she’s been trying to get Hannibal to mate with her for hundreds of years, so she warns Will of how Hannibal is and to leave while he still can.

Months pass and Will is getting adjusted to the culture and is learning just what mating with Hannibal will entail. The mating process is a long, complicated thing between two of the same species, but is even worse with humans in the few semi successful attempts that have happened. Since Will is a trans guy and can get pregnant (and being trans isn’t a thing per se among the other species), the breeding period window is random instead of being during certain seasons of the year.

It starts with a mating bite and the verbal confirmation and initial claiming during sex, then when the breeding season arrives, the mates make a nest together and they meld their minds together by eating each other’s brains (everything regenerates eventually) which completes the process. But since Will is human, he can become pregnant at any time and in order to breed, a nest must be made before the season arrives. By sleeping with Hannibal, his reproductive system begins to become attuned to him and when he’s at his most fertile, Hannibal will be able to sense it and Will will basically go into the human equivalent of heat. They try several times but are never able to conceive, and during this time Will starts to realize that something isn’t quite right with humanity.

Eight months after their initial mating, Jack manages to infiltrate Hannibal’s castle and warn Will of the assimilation plan and to tell him to go back to human society before he himself becomes assimilated and can’t leave. Jack then asks him to betray Hannibal and incapacitate him enough to cage and imprison him so that his physical body can rot and he can transcend into the universal consciousness and can’t be a danger to them anymore. He gives Will an experimental prototype of a gun that can supposedly neutralize the process in the alien’s cells that allows them to be immortal, completely killing them. But just as Will is about to give Jack his answer, Hannibal appears and knocks Jack out and tries to pounce on Will, just as both of them sense that Will has entered a fertile cycle, with Hannibal going into rut and trying to finish the mating process. Will holds him at gunpoint and tells him what he knows, and shoots Hannibal as he’s about to try and forcefully mount him, running and leaving Jack behind. He doesn’t realize though that Hannibal had swiped him in the stomach with his claws, and collapses on the forest floor of Hannibal’s property as human medics arrive.

He wakes up back in human territory and is greeted by the human president to tell him that Hannibal survived and has declared war on humanity. She says that they can win the war, but only with Will’s help since he knows every secret of the alien society. Will immediately refuses, saying that they can go fuck themselves and to leave him alone and drop him off in uncharted wilderness in human territory so that he can fend for himself and live out the time he has left all alone and away from the war. Obviously, she refuses and instead makes him go home and has a security detail watch over him, accepting Will’s refusal to help.
