Avo toasts featuring local strawberries from the farmers market + greatest compliment in the world + looooooots of dog pictures + tart & tasty + shopping for a grill tray for my dad + sedge at loweās i wanted to id (itās papyrus!) + my kink IS karma

You may notice the feature of Jennifer Nealās My Pisces Heart in thereā¦i will take a leaf from the reviews on the back and say that this soon to become a must-read for the travel memoir genre which i will say i quite enjoy. I fear that after years of scoffing, Wild by cheryl strayed is in my future after all. I am excited to say that i am in the final 100 pages of Pisces and she is finally about to get to germany!! I am enjoying it and appreciate how thoroughly researched this book is and i am consistently presented with things i did not know before. But ! The research-heavy chapters are moving slooooooow and at points i am struggling to keep focused on the big picture here. But i fear i only think that because i read it in some manās comment on goodreads and i have this fear that my opinions are never really my own and they arent good if i get them from somewhere else so. We will see, i am definitely more invested in the personal stories, but a memoir is for the author to say what they need to say, so. I am here to listen.
I also checked the library copy of Platonic back out so I can finish up the last 100 pages of that one sometime soon!

[ID: an illustration labeled āIconic fauna of Hawaiāiā, depicting animals - an iāiwi bird, a monk seal, a humpback whale, an Oahu tree snail, a yellow-faced bee, a nÄnÄ goose, a Hawaiian hawk, a hoary bat, and a reef triggerfish. Teal leaves adorn the background and there is a red, yellow, and blue patterned border. Animals are labeled with their Hawaiian and English names. End.]
The theme for Creature Mail this month is endemic island creatures! This design will be a postcard. :-)

May 31-mundane and slightly too personal edition
Home decor at Michaelās (rip joann) that was funny to me + photos of my dog + Ludacris lyrics that tickled me + things i found looking through family photos: picture of my dad when we were little playing with glow sticks + a sign i made for my mom that made me realize that my association of affection with achievement started WAY earlier than i thought. Not that i blame my parents for that; i think they just wanted the best for me. And still do

Anyways working thru my tbr and made it to Double Blind and tbh i am not loving it. I think he is dumping too much irrelevant information into the prose. Like i think sometimes thatās good for enrichment but sometimes it just feels pompous and i donāt feel like iām learning so much as fighting to get scraps of a narrative. I donāt know. I guess when classic authors do this itās like art or whatever but when this guy does it i donāt like it. Tbh im not a big fan of actually READING those classic authors but i respect their hustles. So maybe thatās my take on St. Aubyn. Even though last night i was really getting into the story! Heās losing me again

I fiiiiiiiiiiinally finished The Heather Blazing! Here is the review I put on goodreads:
I would recommend this book! I enjoyed reading it, but i did end up challenging myself to finish it quickly and didnt take enough time to digest it, because i didnāt think i was interested enough to finish reading it if i took a break to read something else. I thought it was cool as a character study, but ultimately it wasnāt really just about the one character, but about his whole community (and of course the state of Ireland, though I would recommend looking into the history of Wexford and Irish politics before jumping into this one! I wish i had). I donāt know much about Irish culture, but i get the sense that this is a very Irish take on a novel like thisāthe focus on community, family, and history is a given and something that I see in my own Irish Catholic family as well. I think I am too young to really āgainā something from reading this, but if i had to pick a takeaway, I would say that no man is an island, even those who think of themselves that way. Also something about generations? I think there is something to the way that TóibĆn weaves the three generations/times of Eamonās life togetherā¦something something cyclical nature of life and perhaps this extends even to the political side of the novel, although that part (from my limited understanding) seems to be the oppositeāEamon grows up hearing stories about fighting for whatās right and against the current government, but ends up a member of the government and even attempts to hide things heās done from his friends and family. Well maybe by reconciling with Niamh and her son he like dissolves this tension. I donāt know. Iāll have to think about it.
Trying to get back into reading since I canāt go out as much. Here is my tbr :) i think i am going to start with Unsinkable because i think it will be easier to get into, but Lemon also speaks to me. Well they all do which is why i have them. Anyway glad to be moving on from this book since it took like a month and a half to finish! Hopefully my new picks are interesting and i can gain some new momentum

Food diary today: i made avocado toast my usual way (tomato and hard boiled egg) and it was delicious as usual. We got some nice sourdough bread from the grocery store and it was noticeable! I was very happy to be eating it. Now having yogurt with granola and strawberries and frankly its not hitting the way i thought it would but thats ok. Have been overly worried about my cholesterol lately so thats exciting. At least the egg was hard boiled and not fried???

Local cat sightings plus cool finds from work: owl pellet dissection, unexploded ordnances, and someoneās mining claim tag that i thought was cool. Also made me think about the implication that a $100 fine was equivalent to six months in prison and how the prison system punishes people who cannot pay bail/fines. Like is six months of someoneās time with their children and loved ones only worth one hundred dollars to the people making these rules? Anyway sunset at camp photo and selected beastie boys song that reminds me of a friend also included
