Strikingly simple 'dial' in the brain may help it distinguish imagination from reality | Live Science
The fusiform gyrus is involved in high-level visual processing, such as identifying objects and people's faces from their appearance. The study suggests that during imagination, the signal strength is weaker compared with during perception; this difference in signal strength enables the brain to distinguish between the two. That is, if the activity crosses a certain threshold, the brain interprets it as reality.

Success
What is success? What does success mean in a dream? How do you know you have achieved success in a dream? If we define success as the opposite of failure, then does failing teach us how to be successful? Or, is success based on a process that triggers a dopimine reaction in our brains to helps us remember a pattern being learned?
What if success where defined as a boolean value, either you have achieved it, or you havent. How else could success be defined?
For many of us, the projects we undertake are small and easy. Learning to make a peanut butter and jam sandwich is easy for me. Success is achieved when i can.eat the sandwich.
Larger projects have more steps and more chances to fail. But, if you define success as completing the whole project, like preparing a 7 course meal, then you are missing out on all the pieces.that are successful along the way.
And, what happens when the ingredients you need for a perfect meal are not available? Have you failed again to prepare?
When i teach my students Gracie Jujitsu, i am careful to.define success for them. Success when learning a new technique is not learning to execute it perfectly. To just achieve understanding of the technique requires executing it 1000 times. And, over the course of years to come, they will.see how the technique can be executed from many different positions.
Thus, success or failure is not defined by whether or not the technique has been mastered. Its based on our expectations of what the outcome should be. We should win the match, prepare the complex meal, implement the long arguious implementation of a project.
No, instead of defining success on our expectations, we define it based on progress. Progress in both the project at hand, and how often we have executed this type of project.
If you have never studied accounting, how will you know if the techniques being applied are correct? In high school, i took an accounting class, that taught us how to separate each receipt, categorize it, and mark it into different accounts. Then we were taught how to confirm our addition was correct. I used this information to reverse engineer an accounting project for our class for which we lacked the materials, but had bits and pieces in the book.
Success for me, then was ... to determine if the information provided in the examples in the book were complete, and if not, could i create enough material to complete it?
I achieved my goal, with an understanding that i may fail to achieve the goal because not all the information was present.
Success in a dream is not achieved the same way we achieve success in reality. Or, i.have not been able to sustain an environment long enough to achieve success as defined in reality. Success is defined around understanding or a specific feeling in a dream. If you understand something your emotional response is to.relax and be happy, when you dont understand something the emotional response is frustration and anger.
To achieve constant happiness in the dream realm, you would either need to hold the dream in a constant state .. like having a picnic at a beach on a sunny day with friends ... or you would need to see each situation as it is in the dream, understand it, and be emotionally ok with it.
This then allows our curiosity to take root, because human nature abhors boredom. If we can achieve success in these small realms, then we can achieve success in larger realms, or by tweeking the scenario ever so slightly.
Success is no long defined by achieving it or failing in its attempt, but in learning something new about the processes you already know and love. Expanding on how they can be applied, or where they can be applied. Becoming a scientist who is.more interested in the results of a study than the outcome.
So what if you,re missing an ingredient to replicate the perfect 7 course meal, find a new ingredient, or set of ingredients. This is the difference between a student and a master. They are not.creating on the fly, they understand from 1000s of examples of what tastes great together, and know how prepare it in such a way that its surprising and new.
It evokes curiosity, pleasure, excitement, and awe in their ability to skillfully take something that looks extremely detailed and difficult and make it look like magic.
Therefore, i ask that you look at your definition of success and ask what it is truly based on. Is it on failure? Is it on progress? Is it on understanding? Is it on curiosity? Or is it on holding onto a static unchanging world view where you are hapoy all the time?

The depression
Its really strange how physics works and the tools we have to rest them in dreams.
I became aware when i felt a depression form in the foam mattress i was sitting on. I took a pillow to swat the air around the depression, to no avail. And, after several exasperating scenes, with the depressions kept forming to my left, i woke up.
Apparently, i had acid reflux, which became worse on my left side, and had to use the restroom.
