[1.] :: already mentioned this, but layla strikes me as a non-binary (she/her) ace. [-: maybe that’s projecting though. (but also... her palette and drive...)

I also like to believe that she disregards unky’s spiel about marriage (no matter how well-intentioned he is) because she really is just all that much more focused on research considering she wouldn’t mind if her day was just... holed up in that clinic of hers. maybe the thought’d only come to her for tax benefits or research purposes. even if she happened to be more of a demi, she’d dismiss that nonsense as a distraction and do her best to not pursue it. ⠀

so despite unky’s theme of matchmaking, he does, in fact, at some point stop bringing it up. guy’s a cool friend!

[2.] :: the squid-like appearance is not... necessarily by choice. her deity insists on at least having enough of its likeness expressed (e.g., only showing the eyes), so it was either the practical(?) get-up she has now or what would be the equivalent of a blanket sheet.

[3.] :: the first time she emitted laser beams from her eyes was an accident and in the heat of a dispute. after that, it was at least a week of experimentation for the limitations and extent of what she could do (and how to subdue it).

[4.] :: rarely has a stable income and is relatively accustomed to debt. not to say that it isn’t manageable, but this is also a matter of course of keeping the anonymity she likes and focusing on experiments.

[4b.] :: can also pay for her own meals. doesn’t skimp on the details if she can avoid it - but on one hand she never at a lot to begin with, and on the other she’s a doctor so she at least doesn’t forgo meals entirely unless she was particularly absorbed with something. doesn’t really expect unky to pay for her and normally orders little when eating out only partially to save funds to save up for a medical tool.

[5.] :: the type of doctor that is fine with working out in the field and finding the patients herself... but that’s mostly out of slight malicious intent than altruism, as she’ll just take the business to people as a matter of hustling for money. if they can’t pay? well. that’s a new research subject. [6.] :: really though, layla would not mind living out her life in seclusion if it meant directing her entirety to medical studies. it’s only with the introduction of unky chai has she changed her sentiments about that only slightly - where she’s come to recognize his patterns and can notice his absence if he decides not to visit the clinic one day to talk her ear off or drag her out. he’s probably the only person she’d consider a reluctant friend.

[6b.] :: would go out of her way to explain why the pseudo-science nonsense unky shares with her is ridiculous, provided he asks or she decides there’s enough time to discuss it. she loathes it. but, she also doesn’t mind it too much - getting to share her own extent of medical knowledge and spending time with the dude.

It is easy to mistake Layla for an innocent child due to her youthful appearance, but that would be a grave error on your part.

At any given time, this eccentric medical genius is conducting morally ambiguous experiments and operations in her dark corner of the world.

If you ever lay eyes on her, you’ll never forget her creepy smile.

✦ CAREER II ✧ Only Unky Chai can forge these amazing ties of friendship with her.

Layla has always been a solitary person. She’s almost invisible to other people, which is how she likes it.

Her medical studies encompass her entirety.

That was until the Oolong Kidnapping Incident which thrust her into a reluctant friendship with Unky Chai.

The old man has taken it upon himself to act like a father to her. He often asks Layla about her day and frequently shares pseudo-scientific medical articles with her online.

Although his intentions are good when sharing these articles, she always chastises him for believing in such nonsense.

Despite her harsh words, Layla treasures her odd friendship with Unky Chai.

But whenever he tells her that she should find a boyfriend, she gets super angry at him.

✦ CAREER III ✧ Hide yourself in the dark and control everything.

Layla doesn’t want to be tied down to any organization, be it the Esper Union or the Shadow Decree.

The vast majority of the agents in these organizations don’t even know that she exists.

In Grandis, there’s an old saying, “Those who control the world do so behind the scenes.”

Layla understands this. Her medical genius and ability to work in complete secrecy make her a force to be reckoned with.

Because of her anonymity, she is able to venture far beyond the conventional boundaries of approved science.

She won’t stop her research until she finds results that satisfy her.

The “Secrets of Gyrate”? What’s this about a “Treasure Devourer” lurking in my clinic’s backyard? Huh! I’m going to show whoever’s been spreading these malicious lies and driving customs away exactly who the real “devourer” is!

I deserve to be commended, not attacked, for my affordably priced medical services!

Let’s have a think, shall we? The market price for the cutting-edge Debia MedArm that I need for my clinic is around 30,000 nexus crystals. So if I’m getting 1000 nexus crystals per patient, then I need to see 30 patients just to afford one of those devices.

Perhaps I should consider raising my prices?

My new business venture seems to have stalled. Why? Simple: costs, costs, costs!

Everyone’s physiology is “different”, which means I’m going to have to personally examine everyone before running the massage machine. I need to figure out exactly how much Esper power I can use, and that’s just going to take hours and hours of extra work. It’s just not viable.

If I can’t use some sort of fixed setting, i.e. standardization, it just won’t work! Meh. Time for a new venture!
