the thing about professor!mark being so hot is that it implies that every day of filming they sit adam scott down in the hair and makeup chair and say "okay now make him look like shit"

I do agree with everyone who’s saying that Cold Harbor is probably death. However, I don’t really see the point of getting your innie to die for you—unless you believe the thing about innies going to heaven—since your outie will obviously cease to exist too. If you’re dying, and rich enough to afford convenience severance, you might as well go to a nice euthanasia clinic in Switzerland.
On a similar note, most of the unpleasant experiences we see severance being used/tested for could be avoided by other means, usually paying someone else to do whatever it is.

gemma reading a paper by one of her students titled "themes of religious conversion in tolstoy's the death of ivan illyich", the doctor picking up the same book in her room on the testing floor and saying "let me guess, he dies in the end", the rooms all representing some kind of fear whether common or specific (fear of the dentist, fear of flying, fear of endless writing) with one room not entered, "you were right, the numbers were scary", ivan illyich no longer fearing his own death as he lies dying. cold harbor is the fear of mortality, the fear of death. dots are being connected? kinda?

So, severance is a procedure that allows you to outsource experiences you may find unpleasant and/or painful (going to the dentist, giving birth, writing thank you cards, etc.) to a slave version of yourself. However, the problem with this (apart from the whole slavery issue) is that you may have lingering physical aftereffects from the unpleasant experience, whether pain or trauma that is held in the body if not the mind. Presumably, Lumon are trying to somehow solve this issue and that’s why they keep asking Gemma which rooms she feels pain from, but I’m not sure how it could be solved.

Another parallel between Severance and Dollhouse: the reasons that the characters have ended up becoming severed workers/Actives are very similar (which I guess makes sense as there are not that many scenarios extreme enough to make you want to get your mind wiped): bereavement (Mark/Mellie), being a traumatised military veteran (Irving/Anthony), wanting to bring down the evil corporation from the inside (Irving/Caroline). And then we have the character played by Dichen Lachman who seems to have been imprisoned by the evil corporation against her will and needs rescuing (Gemma/Priya).

15 Questions
Tagged by @sagiow and @tough-n-dumb. Cheers, guys.
Were you named after anyone?
Not a real person but a Biblical figure my mum once memorably described as "the person who invented sex." (You can probably figure out my name now...)
When was the last time you cried?
I am pregnant so I am crying constantly at the moment. I cried throughout the Barbie film yesterday!
Do you have kids?
Just the one currently underway.
Do you use sarcasm?
Rarely.
What’s the first thing you notice about people?
I don't know if it's necessarily the first thing I notice, but I've always thought people's shoes are quite revealing.
What’s your eye color?
Brown.
Scary movies or happy endings?
Not a big fan of either. If I had to choose, I'd probably go for happy endings but they have to be well earned and not trite.
Any special talents?
I don't really have any party trick-type talents anymore. When I was a teenager, you could give me a series, episode, scene and line number of any episode of Red Dwarf I-VI and I could tell you the line.
Where were you born?
In a ward for especially young and especially old mothers (my mother was the latter) in a hospital in London, England.
What are your hobbies?
Nothing very serious. I draw a bit, although not enough; I do a bit of baking and I'm half-heartedly attempting to learn Russian. Very occasionally (like, every 5-7 years), I write some fanfic.
Have any pets?
No, I travel too much. I used to have some African pygmy hedgehogs (hence my profile pic), but sadly couldn't bring them with me when I moved from the UK to France six years ago.
What sports do/have you played?
I am the world's least sporty person and I hate competition! I have been doing yoga regularly for more than ten years though.
How tall are you?
5'7"/170cm.
Favorite subject at school?
Art, hands down.
Dream Job?
I wish I knew. For a long time I thought I wanted to work in media production, then I tried it and realised I don't like the constant stress, long hours and big egos (though I do still see the appeal). Since then I've been vaguely pursuing academia as I like analysing stuff and hanging out with students (mostly), but I've never really properly tried to get a full-time, permanent academic job cuz deep-down I'm scared of the workload, especially the constant stacks of marking.
Tagging
I think most people have done this already. @emeraldsilvercabbage @desdemonaspace @undisclosed-serendipity @universallypandadelusion: any of you guys not done this and want to?

Hello world! Emerging temporarily from under my rock to say thank you for the tags, various people--I think @sagiow @combat-librarian @tough-n-dumb--sorry if I've forgotten anyone!
last song: 'Because the Night' by Patti Smith. Thank you, Spotify algorithm.
currently watching: We've always got various things on the go in my house in varying states of abandonment. Just started the new Black Mirror; Beef (Mr DC likes it; I'm not really keen); been rewatching Community slowly for literally years as Mr DC hadn't seen it. Eagerly waiting for the second season of The Bear to make it onto Disney+.
currently reading: Almost finished Kindred by Octavia Butler, after recently having watched the FX series, which has sadly been cancelled--I thought it was really good! The book is obviously excellent too, although harrowing.
current obsession: I don't really have a current media obsession. I'm pregnant for the first time at the age of 40 after a long struggle with IVF, so that's been preoccupying me for the past couple of months--mainly worrying something would go wrong! Plus there was the usual end of semester craziness keeping me busy. But now I'm safely well into the second trimester and on summer holidays, it may be time for a new obsession to emerge! Not to mention that there is a load of fic from my last obsession, The English, that I need to catch up on reading.
I have not really been on Tumblr much recently so I have no idea who has already done this. If you haven't, please do!

Based on the best-selling novel by Octavia Butler, FX’s Kindred premieres December 13. Only on Hulu.
Mallori Johnson stars as Dana, a young aspiring writer discovers secrets about her family’s past when she finds herself mysteriously being pulled back and forth in time to a 19th century plantation.

Being quite new to Tumblr, I've been gradually following tags related to various media I've been obsessed with over the years, including stuff I haven't really thought about much lately. I am surprised but pleased to discover that one of the most active fandoms among them is the one for Red Dwarf, my very first fandom, aged 12 in the mid-90s! It was the subject of the first fic I ever wrote (well, it was the script for an episode, if that counts) and also my first fan art, including my bedroom walls, painted by me and my best friend (below) and my first fan vids (we remade several episodes). Long live the RD fandom!

The tenth and final* chapter of "A Woman Stands Among the Trees" is now up at AO3.
Thanks for your patience, everyone. I've got a lot going on at the moment. Am very behind on reading and commenting on everyone else's fic as well, but it's a good problem to have!
*Really final this time. Unless it's not. But it is. Maybe...

Getting To Know Me
Rules: Tag 10 people you want to get to know better.
Thank you for tagging me @sagiow and @tough-n-dumb.
Relationship Status: I'm gonna go with the French "concubinage" as it sounds so much more exciting than "living with a partner."
Favorite Colour: Red although people usually assume it must be purple as I wear a lot of purple and often have purple hair.
Song Stuck in My Head: I don't have one right now.
Last Song I Listened To: "I Need My Girl" by The National, purely because Spotify put it on one of my daily mixes. (I had never even heard of The National before Spotify somehow decided I love them and started playing them at me all the time.)
Three Favourite Foods: I don't think I can narrow it down to three precise ones. Three types of food I like are proper Italian pasta dishes where the pasta itself is homemade; comforting milky puddings such as bread and butter pudding and most kinds of dim sum.
Last Thing I Googled: Probably something medical; I'm a massive hypochondriac.
Dream trip: Japan!
Tagging: I'm pretty sure all my mutuals have already been tagged!

Please head over to AO3 for Chapter 9 of "A Woman Stands Among the Trees" aka "Sure we're married. We had a sandwich on his blanket and tons of sex afterwards" (if only the chapter was as amusing as that subtitle courtesy of @sagiow)!
