Podcast
One of the first activities of the semester was to organise a 40 minute podcast with two other people, and so I grouped up with two other St Kilda supporters so that we could do a podcast on St Kilda.
We used an enclosed room to record the audio, and our phones were used for recording.
Recording was the easiest part mostly because the chemistry between the three of us made it easy to keep the conversation going and to ramble on about information we already knew about the club. While we didn’t get sidetracked, we took notes of what segments we wanted to talk about and outlined what our roles would be.
The editing process was easily the most difficult part as we had to fix up a few audio issues and piece together the appropriate audios from the three different microphones. Making sure that they were all around the same volume and that they were synchronised was a challenge that was overcome by learning how to to use Adobe Audition. cancelling out any background noise was also a necessity, and adding music for the intro and the outro was important for setting the tone.

Q&A Livestream
Another exercise that we were assigned towards the end of the semester was to start an Instagram live stream, where groups of 2-5ask questions for the person going live.
The topic I decided to base my livestream around was the AFL in general.
I spoke for five minutes and answered general questions about my predictions and my highlights of attending footy games. Speaking for the most part was easy, and continuing the conversation was never much of an issue, as the topic was centred around my interests.
The bit of concern for the exercise was the camera setup as we didn’t have a tripod to keep the phone at eye level, so we had to rely on a backpack to get the job done. Naturally, maintaining proper eye contact and posture conveys authority, trust and interest (Golum, 2017) but I found that both of these were a problem with livestreaming. Maintaining eye contact was a bit of an issue as it came off as off-putting or awkward and with posture, it was hard to sit still at times or be positioned where I’m sitting straight or facing directly at the camera.
The hardest part of the topic was determining the duration of the livestream, so we came to the conclusion that someone should keep track of how close it was to five minutes. Without vocalising the time left, we had to rely on gestures for when to wrap it up.
The easiest part was being a spectator and asking the questions. Quite often, I would be stuck with asking another question, to keep the conversation, but the group of 5 did help us keep up with the questions, and knowing when to move on or wrap things up.

Instagram Posts
My photography and editing skills were put to the test as the class was assigned to create three Instagram posts based off of our Photoshop knowledge.
The three photos I chose were all photos that were taken around the Chadstone campus and showed a bike shed, a stairway, and a person walking along the sidewalk.
The three photos were edited through Photoshop using the Camera Raw Filter and were intended to comply with the rule of thirds, where every third of the screen would provide detail to communicate an underlying message or provide a bit of detail.
While there were no use of layers or a diverse use of Photoshop tools, I felt that the Camera Raw Filter would be efficient in time saving, and would be an easier way to edit as I go along.
The first photo shows a person walking along a pathway on the corner of a street. The aperture has blurred out the background, while also giving off information based off of colour. The vibrancy of green, yellow, blue and orange has made it easier to discern nature and manmade objects. The added texture to the image has made it possible to reveal more detail in features such as streaks in hair and the wrinkles in the shirt. With the rule of third, horizontally, there is a distinction between the sky taking up the upper third, the road and further houses in the middle third, and the nature as well as the shirt logo in the lower third.
The second photo shows an image of stairs with low saturation and was intended to set a tone of gloominess. With the shadows and the blacks being clearly visible in the image and with the lack of saturation, it creates a feeling of gloominess as “typically, deep, dark colors and their shades prevail, reflecting to the full where there is apprehension, hopelessness and despair.” (Alekseeva & Ivanova, 2015, p. 149). This low saturation can also communicate weather patterns or time of day.
The third photo shows a bike shed with mostly blue, black, white and green colouring. This post was to illustrate perspective. The sign was shifted to the left to change up the focus of the image, with the bars taking up the centre of the screen. The depth of the image is almost invisible however as the interior of the shed is now almost too dark to see. The original image had too much exposure, and so I thought that darkening the image and taking the photo at a certain angle would create a dramatic effect.

St Mary’s Salesian VR Proposal
Tumblr media
Virtual Reality is now growing to be more popular in the sporting industry as new technological advances have changed the way that players and fans experience sport. Through a computer-generated simulation, VR provides users with a 360 degree experience to make them feel like they are present somewhere else. Sporting organisations like the NBA have introduced virtual reality to enhance the viewer experience, by offering a VR experience in the League Pass.
The trouble is however that virtual reality is not always available to every sporting team. It is expensive and affording the technology or the manpower to create a simulation out of headsets can be out of a local sporting team’s reach financially.
However, it is possible hire a 360 camera and uploading this to a social media platform.
Platforms like Facebook and YouTube have had a feature for a few years now where content creators can upload virtual reality videos, where viewers can use their technology, specifically smartphones to rotate and experience what’s being recorded in a 360 degree angle. Sporting clubs have made it possible where fans can view the action from the side-lines or be provided with a tour around a clubs facilities or a stadium.
Something like this could be possible for a local football club like St Mary’s Salesian. A 360 camera could be hired to show some game footage between the men's or women's senior games, while also providing the viewer with a tour around Ferndale Park and what it means to be a part of the St Mary’s Salesian Amateur Football Club. The game-day experience could show the players or the fan experience.
Facebook would be a good platform to upload this on because of the club’s large following. People of all ages would be likely to witness it in VR and would associate St Mary’s with being creative. YouTube is another platform that has been utilised to form interviews but a game-day experience would also be appropriate for creating more exposure and gaining more traction.

Video Interview
This task was assigned where a group of four had to organise a one-on-one interview to discuss their sporting passion.
The interview was a brief 5-minute discussion between the interviewer and interviewee to talk about their sporting passion of the St Kilda Football Club and Australian football in general.
From what we learned about the rule of thirds and composition, we hoped to distribute the camera on a 45 degree angle and at eye level with the interviewer, while also placing another camera beside the interviewer’s shoulder to set the main focus on the interviewee.
This task forced me to learn more about Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. I had very limited knowledge about both apps and it had helped me learn about more advanced video editing features
Setting the intro and the lower thirds meant that I had to learn about keyframes, adjusting the speed and applying motion blur to make the transitions look smooth. After Effects was the software I had used for this.
I found that Premiere Pro was the more challenging software as setting up the multi-cam took a few attempts to get right. Rendering was also a problem as I originally didn’t understand what all of the rendering details meant and why the process was more complicated than expected.
Colour grading was a bit of a struggle as well, considering that a lot of natural lighting was already present in the interview and it made it hard to suggest whether dimming the natural light would also lead to the interviewer/interviewee being too dark as a result.

Interactive Article
During week 2, the class was required to write an interactive article on WordPress to challenge our knowledge of writing, and to formulate an opinion piece in a short amount of time.
Tumblr media
The topic I decided to do mine on was the Sydney Swans, considering that I preferred to do a topic a team other than my own (St Kilda). The Sydney was the preferred choice being that they had high expectations coming into 2021 and because I had previously thought of releasing this idea into the media.
I used my applied knowledge to construct the article by dividing my main points into four sub-headings.
What I learned during this process was how to link a website through text. This will be useful down the track when I hope to write future articles and reference information that helps back up a statement or provides context for the reader.
The challenge of this task was making sure that the ideas were properly compiled together and that I would be able to complete the task in a timely matter.
Linking videos and images did help capture the image that I was hoping for, but at times, I found myself slightly confused with the SEO analysis. There was a lot of information that was in the improvements section but. It recommended that I provide internal links, and come up with a longer title. But reviewing the analysis did help, as I did my best to ensure that most results were good.
