there's a shift, a change at fifteen for riku. he notices the boys in the showers in the school locker room more often. his palms sweat and he stands as deep in the corner as possible when dressing in and out.

towels snap in the air behind him. a shout. laughter. the balmy air is heavy with the scent of adolescence and too much body spray that overtakes the teenage boys' need for deodorant.

it stinks.

it's sweet.

don't be weird, his mind snaps at him as he rushes through changing and out of the room to join his peers in a less charged setting.

he's breathing heavy, panting, as he escapes and ducks out behind the bleachers instead of running the track like the rest of the boys for their warm-ups.

he watches them, absently licking his lips when he feels a stirring in his chest. when he realizes he's been staring, his heart drops somewhere on the ground, probably around that empty crushed soda can nearby.

"riku!"

his head snaps up, eyes wide, heart now in his throat as sora comes jogging over. he's shiny with exertion, a brilliant smile on his face that makes riku's stomach twist before settling comfortably like he's just eaten his mother's fish stew after a cold day outside.

"c'mon, warm-ups are over. come play blitzball with us!"

sora, silly, simple sora who's only a year younger but still as boyish as ever, practically tackles him, arms around his shoulders as riku catches him easily. he had been working out the summer before school started.

sora laughs, and riku can't help but laugh too as sora's suddenly warm and close and so full of puppyish affection that riku's firm stance on keeping his distance from other boys is shattered.

"you can be on my team," sora says, face suddenly too close, too close. "we'll beat tidus and wakka if we team up."

don't be weird, his mind snaps at him.

don't think about kissing him.

riku bites down so hard on his lip he can taste the salt-iron tang of blood before he cracks a smile and shoves sora away, almost too rough to be playful.

"fine, but you're the goal keeper," he laughs, almost too loud, too forced

don't be weird. be normal. be a normal boy.

Not really one to articulate what I’m thinking the best but I did want to discuss this at base level at the very least because it’s a feeling I’m quite familiar with. I didn’t think as much into it when I was a kid myself. Probably because I felt it was only natural to want the things Sora and Riku did. I wasn’t happy, after all.

Sora and Riku going to the play island to “get away” from their home as far as they can go is REALLY sad…and Riku saying the adults won’t let them go alone until their older hints to me more than just “wishing for independence”. It makes me wonder just WHY they want to be independent at such a young age- not to say it’s uncommon for kids to think this way in general but bare with me and remember what I said at the start.

Kingdom Hearts - Traverse Town

Designs for the (most of) the other major players in the ghost au! Color versions for sora/riku/kairi to come later, I wanted to post this now and Riku was fighting me a lot even though I changed his design the least. Sora's outfit takes some cues from his beta design, Kairi's outfit is somewhat different since she was raised in Radiant Garden but is of a similar style and has the same color palette as her KH1 fit. She wears hiking boots instead of water shoes. Similarly, her keyblade is like Destiny's Embrace but uses different flowers (calla lily, tulips, maybe some others when I draw it in more detail.) As for who bequeathed her and why.... ദ്ദി๑>؂•̀๑)
