Reminder to myself, and for anyone who might need a reminder as well:
Joy is not a limited resource. I am allowed to enjoy life. Forcing myself to be miserable (with no farther goal) will not be helpful to others. My joy does not negate my own suffering, nor others' suffering. What am I fighting for if not more of that joy for everyone? Must I disqualify myself from that 'everyone' in order to achieve that goal?

PoG putting into words a recurring issue I've found with leftist YouTubers: How they fail to mobilize effective action as the platform keeps driving their audience towards the same idolization we've seen with successful internet personas time and time before.
I have no qualms with Contrapoints, but I find it disappointing that her decision to not make a video about Israel's genocide of Palestinians stems from a personal sense of apprehension and helplessness. She's allowed to feel that way, but she should've probably read the room a little better and not let it sweep her up into doomerism.
But of course, she's not the focus of this problem, and I absolutely don't hold any grudge. This is a problem with how we engage with complicated global issues online: We unknowingly treat the commentary and education around it as a cathartic spectacle, as reassurance that the people who tell us about it have got it all figured out and we needn't think or act further.
These essayists are not at fault for not being politically engaged enough, and they do not deserve to be burned at the stake for it. Gaining the knowledge and wisdom they share is not the end goal; it's the first step on a long path towards change. We still need to take many more steps before we all get there. Progress is a team effort, after all.

Out of curiosity, I looked up what Cobra's backstory is supposed to be, because all I've known about that series until now is that it's one guy with a laser cannon arm and a cigar going on spaghetti-western-esque adventures in space with his gynoid sidekick.
I had no idea that it's basically the plot of Total Recall! xD
In the manga, he starts out as an office worker on Earth. After he treats himself to a literal dream vacation, hoping he gets a virtual harem out of the deal, it accidentally awakened his dormant memories of his past life as a space pirate. Turns out he had faked his death, then had plastic surgery and his memory completely suppressed in order to leave his life of transgalactic debauchery behind.
No wonder why his face looks so dopey and why Terasawa originally wanted Lupin the friggin' Third to voice him! I thought it was an ill fit for what seemed like a hypermasculine escapist character, but knowing his origin story as a cubicle dork, that's kinda brilliant casting!

Just had my first non-delivery cooked dinner in the new place. It was frozen linguini with mushrooms and cream sauce heated up in the microwave, which technically counts.
I was bracing myself for it to somehow go very wrong, but thankfully it didn't. Outside of the oven being slightly dirty and the spinning mechanism squeaking sometimes, the meal was thoroughly cooked, even if I couldn't accurately match the required watts setting (the meal needed 800w but the closest I could manage without going over was 750w). In fact, it was cooked far more evenly than in the microwave at my old place. None of the pasta ended up tough and scalding, and the sauce was not nearly as watery. I'm legitimately impressed at how well it turned out.
The more time I spend here and the more I make use of its utilities, the more at ease I'm starting to feel. My plan for staying here for a few days might just work out.

By the way, there was another song that played at some point in ish's video that pleasantly caught me by surprise because of how funky it was.
Royalty-free music doesn't always have to be the equivalent of ineffectual background noise, and Epidemic's library is a prime example of that.

Just like ish's last Minecraft civilization experiment, the song playing during the climactic war is another hell of a banger.

There are some interesting ties between Lupin III and Space Adventure Cobra here: Lupin III's pilot film (the original Cinemascope version, not the 4:3 cut from Secret File) had Nachi Nozawa voicing Lupin before he would end up being cast as Cobra in the TV anime. Cobra's creator Buichi Terasawa originally wanted Yasuo Yamada to voice him, but TMS already had him locked in for Lupin by that point. He would eventually get his wish when he took on the role for the PC-Engine tie-in games.
After posting about Yasuo Yamada's music album over on @monkeyfaced-trickster, I've been hunting for examples of his other voice roles outside of Lupin III. Of course there's the various dub roles he's done (Clint Eastwood, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Kermit the Frog,...), but I was mainly looking for anime roles, and I did find a few interesting ones.
youtube
Before World Masterpiece Theater, there was Calpis Comic Theater, and its third anime in 1971 was Andersen Monogatari, a children's anime where two pixies named Canty and Zukko (Bubbles and Bingo in the English version) witness the various stories of Hans Christian Andersen. In this show, Yamada voiced Zukko in this soft-spoken yet cheeky manner that's very endearing. What's especially interesting is that Canty was voiced by Eiko Masuyama, who would go on to be the voice of Fujiko Mine from 1977 all the way up until 2010.
youtube
Speaking of Calpis Comic Theater anime, in one episode of Shin Moomin (the 1972 Moomin anime made by Mushi Production, one of two that weren't approved by Tove Jansson), Yamada got to voice a ghost. He's introduced as Too-Ticky's pet, and he's depressed and can't move on because he's been unable to scare anyone, so the Moomin family and friends try to help him out. Say what you will about pre-1990 Moomin anime, but imo hearing Yamada trying to be all spooky-scary in this episode is just so funny and adorable.
Tumblr media
In the 1972 film Panda! Go Panda!, he voiced a police officer who comes to check up on Mimiko while her grandmother is away and becomes scared out of his wits when he finds that a literal panda is living with her. A minor role, all things considered, but still noteworthy nonetheless.
youtube
He was also once the voice of Dr. Mashirito, a recurring antagonist in Dr. Slump. Early in the first TV anime he was voiced by Akio Nojima, but in the 1982 film Hoyoyo! Space Adventure, Yamada briefly took over the role, playing him up as a flamboyant rock star to the point that he even has his own musical number.

Finally, I can sleep like an angel again!
The specific brand of valerian tablets I was prescribed a year ago had apparently been discontinued pretty recently, so not a single pharmacy was supplying them anymore. I just tried a substitute from a brand I was a bit more familiar with, and it worked just as effectively. I woke up at around 8am well-rested instead of the usual 6am groggy.
I'm thinking of using this medication when I'm sleeping at my new place. It may possibly make my transition towards living there a little easier on me.

God, there's so much Spamtenna on my dashboard!
Not that I'm complaining or have anything against the ship. I'm just seeing so much of it that it's getting ridiculous. So many people are being REALLY horny about a glitchy scammer and a sentient TV, and I think it's hilarious. xD

The story that unfolded between Saparata and Fluixon was what got me hooked throughout most of that video.
Saps just wanted to live a solitary peaceful life and not ruffle any political feathers, only for his friend Flux to take advantage of him as a neutral mediator in order to kill a bunch of leaders he disagreed with and then frame Saps for the murder so he could get away scot-free. The whole time that Saps was on-screen, I was on edge, hoping that he would be alive long enough to be proven innocent. The moment that happened when Flux's mask started slipping and everyone finally caught on before the war started, I let out a huge sigh of relief.
Infernus may have been the final boss of the larger conflict, but Flux was the true villain here. He was distrustful of Island 1 from the beginning, having been swept up in their early anti-Island-2 propaganda and never really letting it go. He went so far as to sow discord among Island 2's factions to try to turn them against all of Island 1 (and ultimately failing), ironically becoming no better than the propaganda machine that Island 1 had since left behind.
Island 1 wasn't exactly a perfect utopia, but neither was Island 2. Most of the strongest factions were rife with corruption (mainly at the hands of Flux) and hasty alliances were formed as the war fast approached. This is a remarkable difference from the last experiment, where one large faction descended into full-blown tyranny while all the others were itching to establish a peaceful democracy and unanimously banded together to defeat them. Here, it feels more like drama and misunderstandings piling up without proper resolution until the shit inevitably hits the fan and the two sides are at each others' throats.
The war this time was also a lot more costly, with the number of surviving players dropping from 721 to 320, compared to from 730 to 502 last time. I was not kidding when I said that it felt so apocalyptic.

YOOOOOOO IT'S FINALLY HERE! AND IT WAS ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE WAIT!!
youtube
This is only one side of the story that played out on the successor to Ish's epic "1000 players build civilizations in Minecraft" video, but this makes me excited for that video to get uploaded someday. This feels like being witness to a grand story from the perspective of a humble group of friends, and it's every bit as much of an emotional rollercoaster, with the final battle feeling close to apocalyptic.
I really want to know the full story behind the tensions on the Arc, the planned mutiny on the Pirate Republic by CasualPotato, the rise of Infernus, the trial for the murder of Lingulini in Harbour Bloom, the mystery of the theft of the cartel's entire stock in the name of Tricolor,...
