I think a cool concept for another reason why Nie Huaisang doesn't carry around his saber, at least after his brother's death, is because it's permanently rattling in its sheath.

there are so many people who keep @-ing me lately who are obsessed with the idea of WWX being this underprivileged victim who suffered unfairly at every turn…
no, he wasn't a "scholarship kid" in contrast to JC being a trust fund kid, his family paid for him to go to college exactly the same as his brother, where he had the confidence to behave with absolutely no regard for consequences; before the war he carried a platinum credit card with JFM's name on it and he had job security from like age 10 as JC's future head of R&D
no, he was never treated as a servant, he was the HEAD DISCIPLE of a top 5 sect and afforded much of the privilege and respect that came with that. after the war he was JC's right hand, being second in the sect only to the sect leader. even in the burial mounds he never did a single chore and in fact got lightly scolded for creating more chores
he wasn't hated by the cultivation world because he was an uppity servant trying to climb beyond his class and making the gentry look bad through his own integrity and righteousness, he was hated because he was extremely powerful and super scary and violated a ton of social taboos and behaved erratically in public and seemed beholden to nobody
like girl… you're thinking of Meng Yao!

some of you are making sect leader yao way too brave in your fics. in canon he's just an annoying yes-man who goes whichever way the wind blows and (pardon my language) rides whichever dick is the most powerful....he's not going to openly pick fights with sect leader jiang or chief cultivator hanguang-jun if he doesn't think that a bunch of people are also going to do that. he doesn't want to be the Lone Voice. he's not wen chao.

Established Chengqing where JC is insecure about the soulmate-ness friendship between WQ and WWX, and WQ is unearthing the realization that WWX is abominably jealous of WQ for being with JC

someone needs to make an exhaustive count of how often Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes because man is sassy as hell
what makes this better is that the actor didn't even realize he rolled his eyes that often because it was just a "reflex"

AU where Meng Shi was just a bit more cynical and spent her hard-earned on buying Meng Yao study materials for the Imperial Examination instead of dodgy cultivation manuals. Cultivation is for his father to teach him, after all.
Meng Yao fucking blitzes the exam, because of course he does, and the first time he arrives at Koi Tower it's with an imperial mandate to audit the shit out of them for tax purposes.

thinking about an incense burner dream featuring wei wuxian, demonic cultivator extraordinaire, trapped in jiang cheng’s artfully lit underground torture dungeon/boudoir, all bound with zidian and looking up through his lashes at a vengeful and scantily clad sandu shengshou, who is here to set him on the righteous path

the more literal/grounded version of this poll. Be sure to vote in both!
[novel canon]
imagine a canon divergence alternate universe in which everything leading up to the sunshot campaign happens exactly as it did in canon, with only one change: no wens ever helped wei wuxian, jiang cheng, or the yunmeng jiang as a whole.
suppose that wei wuxian had not said anything to wen ning at the archery competition. suppose that jiang cheng (+ his parents' corpses) were smuggled out of lotus pier not by wen ning, but rather by a surviving jiang loyalist. suppose that the golden core transfer was performed not by wen qing, but rather by the actual baoshan sanren (who then immediately went back up her mountain).
to keep things balanced, let's say that wen qing, wen ning, and their disciples/subordinates never harmed wei wuxian or any of his people either.
now suppose that the sunshot campaign has ended and the surviving wen remnants have been put in brutal labor camps at qiongqi pass by the jin, just as in canon. wen qing still asks wei wuxian for help, not because she knows she helped him in the past, but rather because she saw him on the street and chose him randomly.
would wei wuxian still do what he did in canon: directly rescue the wen remnants and subsequently continue to protect them?
please explain your reasoning in the notes.
#nope. that was a debt he felt he owed#wwx does not care about the wens! he owes wn and wq#and that's okay

I’m kind of done with the ‘heh Jiang Cheng is so bad with women! He got blacklisted and is bitchless’ jokes. The only two marriages we see in his generation of young masters was his sisters and poor JGY and QS’. No one else is married besides MianMian. You don’t see people making maidenless jokes about LXC or NHS. It just feels like a weird way to try and push the ‘JC is a misogynist and unlovable’ agenda. MXTX just didn’t want to write extra women.
the biggest, most devastating tragedy in MDZS is that Jiang Cheng’s life is being narrated by his older brother slash kinda ex. no one could ever emerge from that situation with dignity. things he does that are totally normal that other characters also do are painted as weird and soggy and pathetic and that is because the narrator is his older brother
