I love reading theories about Mayoi!

I actually want to add on a bit, so I hope you don’t mind OP! (I apologize for the bad English, it’s not my first language)

There is a theory explaining Mayoi’s parents’ paranoia, here’s the link (hopefully the link works)

Anyways, in short the theory is that Mayoi is connected to the Shinkai cult (admittedly I know NOTHING about the cult since I only play the EN version, and I don’t know anything about the other characters). OP from the TikTok basically claims that Mayoi is the ‘curse’ of the Shinkai Cult since the ‘curse’ are people who had an illness. The people of the cult drove out those who had the illness. It is believed that the people went hiding under ground, and as you stated, Mayoi lives underground!

As for why his parents told Mayoi scary stories about the Sakuma family… I don’t know. Hopefully more information about Mayoi comes out!

Okay so I have a theory on Mayoi's parents

I will clarify I haven't found any translation for the voiced story where we get to actually see Mayoi inside his house so if there's any important info from that (I doubt it) I don't know about it.

This isn't that long but I'm putting it under a read more

As we know from the main story, la mort and all that, Mayoi has grown up terrified of the Sakumas. He's told us the reason is that his parents have told him horrifying stories about them that have caused him to fear them. This raises a lot of questions. Why was Mayoi told these stories? Why the Sakumas? What relationship does Mayoi's parents have with the Sakuma family? We don't know any of those answers, but something else concerns me. Mayoi may have been being dramatic saying this but had once called the stories "traumatising". Why were his parents "traumatising" him this much with these stories? I'm gonna move onto my next point.

Mayoi lived underground apparently, by picking up what he says in the main story and the story I mentioned at the beginning with him in his house and we get to see that is in fact underground.

This is the thing I'm wondering though. Why does he live underground? Why do the Ayases live underground?

Additionally, I wanna talk about Mayoi's self image. Considering from what we know Mayoi grew up underground with just his parents and assumingly no one else. So that begs the question, why is his self image so abhorrent? Surely his parents would notice just how awful their son thinks of himself.

What am I getting at? Basically, I think Mayoi's parents are incredibly paranoid and think people are out to get them. This would explain living underground for safety, being scared of the Sakumas and possibly to blame for Mayoi's self image being so low. Since we know Mayoi has a "deadly genetic disease", I have a baseless theory that his parents consider him 'cursed' or 'filthy' because of it which they probably ingrained into his head, hence why he constantly seems to be self deprecating and just as paranoid as I theorise his parents to be.

I wish I had more to say but Mayoi literally never brings up his parents other than when saying he was told stories about the Sakumas so this is pure guessing.
