I gotta go to work but I’m still thinking about this rictor and rusty thing and

rictor running away to mexico the first time was published within like, a month of rusty dying. both were in the summer of 1995. 

and I’ve written fic before where rusty’s death happened afterwards, so ric didn’t find out until he was already gone, but… what if it happened before, and that was the tipping point?

rusty dying forced him to think about and remember their friendship in detail, which is what makes him realize he had a crush on him–so it isn’t just shatterstar. he actually likes guys. and now he’s dealing with that on top of losing a friend. and then cable tells them he wants them all to be mentally connected and rictor CAN NOT deal with that right now, he hasn’t even figured himself out, he can’t have other people inside his head, looking at his confused feelings for rusty AND shatterstar now

so he leaves.
