Felix froze, Dimitri's words sinking in and registering a moment after he heard them. "You did what." He opened his mouth to say something about how silly, how childish and foolish such a conniption must have been, and why was Dimitri bringing up such a ridiculous thought at this moment, but something stayed his tongue. "That's absurd. We could never," is what he settled on saying at last. And if he happened to be looking down, suddenly overly interested in wiping microscopic dirt particles off of his sword belt as an excuse to let his hair fall forward and conceal his face, it was no one's business but his own.
"No," he said at last when he remembered Dimitri had asked him a question. "Or maybe there was. I don't know. He talked all the time about finding Glenn a wife, so I suppose as the second son, it wasn't as necessary for me. I'm surprised he hasn't brought it up to me yet." Maybe Rodrigue knew how Felix would bristle at the thought of arranging a marriage. He swallowed thickly, folding and re-folding the rag for something to do to distract himself. "Maybe he'll never and he'll let one of my cousins take over. I don't know what's in my father's head anymore. If I ever did." His eyes narrowed slightly. "Marriage is a sham, anyway."
Mirroring the pure exasperation, Dimitri answered with a sound of disgust as he pinched the bridge of his nose in an effort to alleviate an oncoming headache. "While I can see the appeal, I find it is more trouble than it is worth." A sigh as he too sheathed his sword, arms now coming to cross over his chest with a huff. "No, I am not, nor do I believe I ever will be. I find their interest to be...hollow. There have only been a few at the start that felt sincere, though as my title began to circulate, even they grew tiring." He almost sounded sad at that, Dimitri's shoulders slouching as a heavy frown took over his face. "They had been graciously accepting of my disinterest when initially expressed, though that was quick to change once learning who I was."
There was a weight pulling him down now, the prince sinking into his own thoughts as he mused his inevitable future. "It is foolish, I know, to desire something I might never obtain. Honestly, I am shocked to this day that I had not been promised to another the moment I was born, as Ingrid was. I...have always wondered her thoughts on the matter. She cared for Glenn yes, but what did that mean for ones so young?" He was simply speaking his thoughts aloud now, there being no moment taken to think how Felix might react to the topic at hand.
"I have an opportunity not many have in that I will be able to choose who I wed, seeing as it was not decided for me by my parents, though I do know there was talk on potential brides." A pause, and then a laugh as a memory came to him, a grin being beamed at Felix with once again no thought on the sort of reaction his words would bring. "You know, when I was first told of the matter of promised suitors and what it would entail, I threw a fit right in the middle of dinner. With how close we were as children, I insisted that you and I were to be wed come the time. It made the most sense to my young mind, and I could not fathom why my father thought such a declaration so humerous." A brief pause, a solemn look flasing over the prince's face at the bittersweet feeling the memor brought.
"What of you? Was there an intent for your father to find a promised one for you as he did your brother?"

the candle on yuri's desk flickers in the darkness of abyss, casting long tendrils of shadows onto the walls of his room. he hears the footsteps approaching, so there's no need to even knock before he's opening the door to see sylvain standing there. "two of my favorite things? careful, gautier, or i'd think you're trying to charm me." he tilts his head and steps aside, letting sylvain inside before he hastily shuts the door once more. two can play at this game, and yuri has a feeling they'll be at it all night.
yuri produces the single drinking glass he owns and sets it on the table between them. "we'll have to share. you don't mind, do you?" yuri's lip-glossed mouth curves into a smile.
@dontneedmemories
a well-trained dog follows when beckoned, and sylvain shows up right on cue. when the door creaks open, he displays a well-worn chessboard and a bottle of malt in front of him like a peace offering, a quirked grin gracing his easy lips. " hey yuri, you free to play? " he tries not to seem too eager, but what with yuri's sharp observation, it's clear that he's itching for more than a simple game.

The hours passed in a blur that felt at once interminably long and like the blink of an eye. Felix looked away from the fire, spots dancing in his vision as he blinked and fixed his sights on the now-dark campsite. When had it gone so quiet? There were no more sounds of battle, not even the noise of weapons being repaired or sharpened. It must be quite late, now. But Dimitri's voice, clear as the monastery's morning bell, cut through to him immediately.
Felix turned to see Dimitri limping toward him, and the look of concern that momentarily flashed across his face was quickly replaced with yet another deep scowl. For once, though, that scowl was not (primarily) intended for Dimitri.
"So you're alive after all," he said flatly, standing and picking up his sword where it had been resting against a log. "Yes, this is yours, no one else bled all over me. I'm fine. But you—" Felix scoffed and shook his head. "I was waiting for someone to tell me how you were. When no one did...I thought the worst." Anger flared in his chest at whoever had been in the medic tent, but it died as quickly as it was sparked; it was no one's fault, really. Felix glanced warily at the leg Dimitri was favoring. "Should you be walking around on that?"
Healing session having come fresh out of a fight with no time to rest in-between, Mercedes hardly had enough energy to do much more than stop the bleeding. In a way, it was better that such a wound was being healed in short increments; white magic accelerated the body's ability to heal, which worked wonders for damage outside the body, but internal injuries were a touch more difficult once that external access to it closed. This way, they could ensure the damage under the skin would heal properly on its own should it not all mend with the closing of the gash later on. It was something to tend to come morning after Mercedes had her own chance to rest and recover after a long evening of slinging spells so quickly it wouldn't be a surprise should she somehow discover grey magic in accidentally mixing the two sides of the arcane.
Dimitri had awoken shortly after she had bound his wounds, his first question being about Felix's wellbeing instead of his own. Dedue had then brought him a fresh change of clothes a short time later, as well as what they'd set aside for his portion of their rations. Come morning, the plan was for Mercedes to help along his healing process as much as she could, then they would pack up and set out back to the monastery.
Dimitri had no way of knowing how long he'd been out, only that the moon and stars had now taken the place of the sun, and the rest of the camp had bunked down with it. Perfect, no one would be around to see him get up, the ache of his wrapped up side having him bite down a groan of pain as he tried to fully stand. His leg felt no better, but he could at least walk on his own now, albeit with a slight limp that he threatened to make worse being on it like he was.
"I knew you would be out here." Was his greeting to Felix, the prince not aware that no one had told him he was alright and had been for a few hours now. With how tired Mercedes was and how focused Dedue was on him, it wasn't much of a surprise telling the others of his wellbeing had slipped their minds. "I thought Sylvain had watch duty tonight?" A casual inquiry as if he wasn't shambling over to the fire to stand beside Felix, with him only acknowledging things were wrong upon seeing his friend still covered in blood.
"...Please tell me that is mine, and that you haven't been sitting here injured all evening."

"You—what?" Felix, who had just slipped his arm under Dimitri's to help support his weight, struggled and nearly fell along with him as Dimitri sagged to the ground. "Damn it!" Muttering curses and insults that he'd surely say to Dimitri once he woke, Felix managed to drape Dimitri's limp body over his shoulders, ignoring the blood still seeping through the prince's clothing and onto Felix, and staggered off the battlefield.
"Your Highness!" Dedue came out of what seemed like thin fucking air to literally take Dimitri off Felix's hands. "What happened?"
Felix's tongue felt like a brick in his mouth. "He jumped in front of a bandit. Where's Mercedes?"
Dedue hurried off to bring Dimitri to the medic tent, and all Felix could do was pace, and clean his sword, and haunt the tent looking like a damn specter himself all covered in Dimitri's blood, and wait.
He couldn't wait until Dimitri was healed, because he had words for the prince. A tirade sat, ready to be spat out, on his tongue, something about not guarding his sides like they'd talked about and reckless decision-making and not jumping in front of bandits when Felix had it handled, thanks.
He paced until Mercedes came out to shoo him away from the tent (and refused to give Felix an update), leaving him to either talk to Sylvain or sit alone with his thoughts. The choice was rather clear. Felix huddled up by a campfire, ignoring Annette's offer of tea, his stomach feeling too knotted to keep anything down. What would he do if Dimitri wasn't okay?
As soon as he heard Felix's voice, even with the words somewhat garbled like his head was underwater, Dimitri's entire body relaxed like he wasn't still on a battlefield where nothing was certain. He was obedient for once, the prince's body slumping half into Felix's as his wounds were assessed. The lack of insults was what tipped him off that the gash didn't look good, and yet Dimitri tried to stand despite it. He was like a puppet on frayed strings, moving by Felix's words rather than of his own desires.
He stumbled as he stood, one arm held across his middle in an effort to staunch the bleeding with the other blindly reaching out for Felix's help to stay upright. His eyes may be foggy with pain, and...oh, he couldn't even see out of one of them. When did that happen? He couldn't remember taking a hit to the head, but with how everything spun with a stomach churning sway, it was likely a concussion could be added along with everything else. He was no doubt a sight, half his body stained with his own blood from head all the way down to his thigh. Even his hair wasn't spared, the once fair strands now more a strawberry blonde where they stuck to his forehead at odd angles.
He could hear yelling as the leg with the arrow gave out underneath him, Dimitri not even sure if they'd made it any further than where he'd first been struck, or really how much time had passed at all. Felix was yelling at him now, so that meant everything was fine, right? Surely, it was safe to pass out like his body begged him to, it feeling as if hands were rising up from beneath the earth to pull him down to it.
"You were right," Words slurred, the prince managed a smile despite it all, a lopsided thing that curved up as his body fell down. "I leave myself too open..."

Felix stiffened as he heard the details of this so-called agreement. Something about Dimitri—loosening up? And some relentless foolish girl pursuing him? Stubbornly, he didn't want to think about Dimitri being...pursued. And he didn't want to think about why that mental image felt worse than a hilt to the gut. "So he's dragging you into his incorrigible ways now, too?" Felix rolled his eyes.
And, because Felix apparently happened to be some sort of social masochist, he went on to ask, "So what does it feel like, then? Having girls chase you all over the monastery like you have the last sweet from the dining hall?" He snorted ungracefully, folding his rag and tucking it away. His sword was also put away in its leather sheath at his hip to protect the steel. "Aren't you used to that shit, anyway? You're the damn prince."
With Dimitri having expected a blatant 'I don't care' from Felix, it threw him for a moment at the complete shrug-off his tease had earned. It was too little of a moment to assume that maybe Felix didn't actually hate him as much as it seemed, that this was at least mostly his usual broody schitck, but it had Dimitri smiling just the same. "I know how to wield a sword, I am simply not as skilled in the art as you."
Taking the oil from Felix, the prince couldn't help but scoff along with him as they lamented over their friend. "Believe me, I am aware. I've tried multiple times to talk some sense into him, but you know as well as I that speaking to him is the equivalent of speaking to a brick wall." Handing the oil back after applying it to his blade, Dimitri mirroed Felix's movements with a roll of his eyes. "Did he tell you about our agreement a short time ago? That if he behaves, I have to 'loosen up', as he so put it?" A short, bitter laugh as he remembered just how that had ended, with him cowering like a fool in his friend's room. "The only reason that young lady is not still tailing me is thanks to him 'wooing' her, which I would normally be thankful for if it had not been him to get me into such a uncomfortable situation in the first place."

If there was anyone who knew just how difficult it was to harm Dimitri, it was Felix. Not even because of their shared history, but for how often they trained together. It was one of the few ways the prince could get his old friend to look at him without disdain anymore, or so it seemed. Be it lance or sword, they'd run through every maneuver they could, and at times, it even felt as if Felix was using such drills to spend time with him as well. No doubt it was simply wishful thinking. Felix had changed so much over the years, and they'd grown so distant, who's to say Dimitri had the ability to read him anymore.
At least he could blame his ignorance on pain this time around, Dimitri having found the wrong end of not just a sword, but an arrow that had struck him when he'd faltered after the slice to his side. Chest heaving, air having been knocked from his lungs by the hilt of said sword before pain flared across his right side, it was nothing but a lucky swing of his own weapon that brought down the closer combatant as his own knees hit the dirt. At least, he was pretty sure it was. He'd shouted for Felix to watch out before putting himself between him and the offending sword, so he wouldn't be surprised if his old friend had gotten to the bandit first with how quickly he moved.
There was no doubt a lecture in his future, seeing as it had been his choice to use a sword for the battle. If he'd had his lance, perhaps this wouldn't have happened, but it was supposed to be a simple suppression of wanted thieves, so he decided to try and test his skills in a real fight.
Then again, now that he thought about it on his hands and knees, hand unsure if it should press against the gash to his ribs or arrow in his upper thigh, this wouldn't have happened if he hadn't taken that blow for Felix. He had just…panicked, and Felix was right: he left himself open all too often. The arrow was just an insult in the prince's eyes, something meant to bring him down along with that first blow, but Dimitri only growled like it was a mere annoyance as fingers twitched to just pull the offending thing out, no matter how stupid of an instinct it was.
Seeing as there hadn't been another added to the pincushion his body had become, he could only assume someone else had taken the archer out before Dimitri himself could get his hands on them. That had to be the last of them if his mental count with a shaky gaze flicked across the bloodied clearing was correct. Only, where was-
“Felix!” There was no reason to believe anything had happened to his companion, but watching his own blood seep between his fingers and drip to stain the patchy grass under his hunched over body, his adrenaline refused to allow him to believe otherwise until he saw for himself. “Felix!”

continued from [x] @curse-of-the-phoenix
It happened before Felix fully registered what was going on. One moment, he had just slain one thief and was turning around, only to come face to face with another who'd tried to poorly sneak up on him. The next moment, he saw a flash of royal blue, and reeled back as a figure hit the ground right in front of him. No, that was—that was Dimitri. A storm of emotions rose in Felix's throat, threatening to choke him; he shoved back the tempest and went for it.
The thief who'd dared strike Dimitri fell, dead before he hit the ground, right as an arrow zinged by and found its target in the prince's side. "Damn you, boar—" Felix growled, pulling his blade from the corpse and stalking off, crimson dripping from the steel. And as he thrust his sword, running the archer through, he spared a thought—was this was Dimitri had felt that day Felix looked at him and saw a wild beast instead of a young man? Was this the blood-red rage that soaked his vision, turning every enemy he saw into a target that deserved revenge?
A glance around him told Felix that his allies had the rest of the battle handled, so he went back to Dimitri, dropping to a knee at his side. "I'm fine, boar, now stop drawing attention to yourself," Felix snapped. "Let me see..." Shit, that didn't look good. It wasn't pretty, but it seemed mendable—right? Felix's hand hovered over the wound for a moment, trembling, before he clenched his fist and swore under his breath. "Can you stand? You need to see Mercedes. Come on. You're not bleeding to death right now, you hear me? Not before..."
Not before I finally tell you all the things I've wanted to say.
Felix pushed the thought away and left it to gather dust in the attic of his mind. "Before I tell you how asinine that was," he said instead.
