In half a day, a throwaway SU rant post has gotten more notes than any of my art has for weeks, maybe even months

Hours of effort to make art that still challenges my skills? 20 notes MAYBE.

Benkei Mizuno

The Ultimate Exorcist

Benkei was born on the road by a local Shinto temple. His mother died during the birth and he was found by the monks that lived and served within the temple. Seeing the child as a gift from the gods, they decided to take the boy in and name him Benkei after an elder who had just passed the night before.

Benkei served the temple his whole life and found he had an aptitude for dismissing and warding off evil yokai and sicknesses. Anyone he prayed over was soon cured of their grief and an air of purity and wholesomeness seemed to follow him where ever he went.

Benkei is rather reserved but, like many of his fellow monks, has a great sense of humor. He’s a fantastic cook and is able to persist with very little comforts for a long while. He’s loyal, dedicated, albeit a bit stubborn, and always eager to bridge the gaps between all sorts of people.

Did I mention Benkei has lived his whole life without ever seeing a woman? As such, he refers to everyone he sees with masculine terms, no matter what they look like.

Also also one aspect to Steven’s decision to talk through an issue rather than fight it, is that it creates a contrast to his mom

Whether as a Diamond or as Rose, she showed time and time again that she preferred actions rather than words. And while actions may speak louder, they don’t allow for the resolution Steven eventually created.

But sure yeah he should’ve powerbombed the diamonds 🙃

YES yes yes yes, the fact that he always talked people down, GENUINELY listened and loved, that he was a bleeding heart--

Rose wasn't 100% a villain, she was incredibly complex, but Steven being the best of what she could've been was such a wonderful way to show that children of abusers can break the cycle and be better than what they were "destined" to be

Everyone expected Steven to be a war hero, a general, and instead he was kind, he was compassionate, and THAT ended the war

Also I’m baffled when people say that the ending should’ve been a physical fight with the Diamonds

You know, a complete betrayal as to what the show was about regarding war and fighting

LITERALLY. A show about forgiveness, a show about second chances, a show about understanding that everyone has their own insecurities and flaws and traumas and expectations, you think Steven Cutie Pie Universe would BRAWL???? Bananas.

I'd say these people should watch Houseki no Kuni instead but I think the message of that anime would also entirely fly over their heads 🙃

Steven Universe discourse still cracks me up like

Y'all got a show made by people who clearly love doing their job with explicit LGBT+ rep including non-binary rep and a majority female cast with a variety of body types and with multiple women POC voice actors regarding topics like mindfulness meditation, forgiveness, trauma, PTSD, establishing boundaries within relationships, compassion, with an overall message of forgiveness

And yet y'all seemed to wish for the series' demise at every moment and complained about the most insignificant details like that the storyboard artists had slightly inconsistent art styles

The messages and characters are so complex and compelling and the show gets you to think about difficult concepts and topics which flew over people's heads completely

People still think Steven should've idk wiped out the Diamonds? In the show where the whole message is that people are complicated representations of their experiences and trauma and people deserve second chances?

Idk I feel like a lot of "fans" who start discourse don't actually like the show, otherwise they'd actually absorb the basic premise of it
