A team of six Arts University Bournemouth students have been tasked with organising a crafts fair to promote the use of waste materials within the arts, as part of their Creative Events Management degree. The event, Sea of Scrap, takes place on Saturday 18th February at The Old Fire Station, Christchurch Road.
Sea of Scrap features a series of arts workshops, print sales, and performances from artists Alex Page, Beth Grew and Tino G. By collaborating with local charity Dorset Scrapstore the team aims to use the event as a platform to reduce the amount of waste which goes to landfills.
Government figures published recently show that the recycling rates in England have dropped for the first time ever, from 44.8% in 2014 to 43.9% in 2015. Waste management company Suez have suggested improving this rate by introducing taxes on packaging for manufacturers.
Student Katie Clark states: “this is an alarming drop in the recycling rate, however we believe there are ways of overcoming this issue creatively, and hope that our event Sea of Scrap will highlight this and inspire people of the possibilities of working with waste materials”.
She continues: “we are pleased to be working with the Dorset Scrapstore on this occasion, and are finding the process beneficial and rewarding. It is giving us the opportunity to develop key skills within the events industry, as well as making the community aware of the work of Dorset Scrapstore and resources available on their doorstep”.
"Each week businesses create large quantities of waste and then pay for it to be removed. At Dorset Scrapstore we can collect it for free, giving it a new purpose and stopping it from going in to the landfill. Our scrap becomes a low cost community resource for arts and crafts. We get an amazing range of materials perfect for individuals, schools and groups of all ages. Great for every kind of crafter and any imagination." Sarah Selby, Marketing Manager at Dorset Scrapstore.
Sea of Scrap is open from 2.00pm until 6.00pm. Donations accepted on the door of 50p and above, with all proceeds going towards Dorset Scrapstore.

Craft from Sophie Melissa
Easy to make craft and perfect gifts ideas from the super creative Sophie Melissa, using scrap from Dorset Scrapstore.
The Scarf
fabric and wool from Dorset Scrapstore
thread
pins
fabric scissors
sewing machine
“For the scarf I found some beautiful grey fabric at Dorset Scrapstore, and measured it out against a scarf I had at home to make sure it was long enough. I then cut it in half to get the width right. The scarf took me about an hour and a half in total. I simply hemmed the edges of the fabric to keep it neat, and then made some tassels out of the wool (which was easy enough to do when copying a tutorial from Pinterest). I then hand stitched the tassels onto the ends of the scarf.”
Bead Key Rings
wooden beads (from a broken necklace) and wool from Dorset Scrapstore
key ring loops
scissors
“These key rings were super easy to make and there are tutorials all over Pinterest explaining different ways you can make them. I simply tied some brown wool to the key ring loops, making sure that the wool was long. I then choose a couple beads of different colours and threaded them onto the wool (if the bead holes are small you may need to use a needle to get them on). I then tied off the end and cut the wool off with a little bit left under the beads.”
Make Up Bag
fabric from Dorset Scrapstore
button
elastic
thread
sewing machine
“This make up bag was made using a craft book that I received as a gift recently (Super Craft by Sophie Pester and Catharina Bruns) but there are many other tutorials all over the internet, especially Pinterest. The book had a template for me to copy onto the fabric, I then pinned the fabric in place and tacked along the edges. I then used the sewing machine to sew the sides. After turning it in the right way, I sewed the button onto the front making sure it was in the right position. I then measured out some elastic so that it would fit around the button nice and tight. The elastic was then put into the top flap's seems and stitched all together to complete it.”
