From Superman #11, The Name Game, November 1987, when the mischievous Mr. Mxyzptlk travels to this dimension to challenge Superman, and demonstrate his reality warping powers to transform the Man of Steel into a less svelte superhero.

My roll model in life …
Tumblr media
Pages from a 1971 UK children’s book, A First Do You Know Book, published by Ladybird Books, where the artist, Frank Humphris, projects a man of substance and power who carries his vast corpulence with style and grace. Unfortunately, the book’s author portrayed obesity as a bad thing:
The man in this picture is very large, as you can see … He is too large to run fast and too large to jump … He is too big for climbing mountains or diving … You are not as big as this … You can run and jump and dive and climb.
For added measure (pun intended), the caption reads “some very fat men and women are over 50 stones [700 pounds!] in weight.”
Somehow, I suspect the child psychology didn’t work quite as intended with more than a few British boomer youth realizing that could be them when they grew up, and embracing that future version of themselves!!

Fat man fine art!
Tumblr media
Odalisque by Jo Cassidy … https://www.jocassidyart.com/ and @thatpunkjocassidy on Instagram … the French term odalisque came to refer specifically to a concubine in a harem. Odalisques were very popular subjects in European Orientalist art of the 19th century. Typically, the scantily and exotically dressed female odalisque poses as if on display for the (assumed) male viewer, so the artist’s work here provides a decidedly fresh take on an old art form.
