When Daryl talks to Rick about wanting to leave the Sanctuary, he explains that he just doesn’t feel right there, leading those people. Rick, determined to make things work for everyone, insists on the responsibility they have, but Daryl pushes back, finally saying, "Man, there ain't no 'us' anymore. Everyone's everywhere. That small group we had back in the beginning... we could do anything. That was right. That's what I know."

It’s clear he’s feeling homesick, like he no longer has a place in the group or in the future Rick is trying to build. He’s grieving the loss of the family they once were, resenting how things have changed. Though he never explicitly says it, his rejection of Rick—over and over—makes it obvious he’s still deeply hurt by Rick’s decisions. Their conversation ends with Rick saying, "We're not together because things have changed." Daryl stays silent for a moment before nodding, but you can see how much he’s hurting, how hard he’s holding back. Then he says, "The thing is, you changed them, Rick. But I get it." But he doesn’t. He’s angry, grieving, overwhelmed by guilt. And what’s worse is that no one—literally no one—seems to notice how much he’s struggling to keep it together.

After that conversation, Carol finds him. He’s honest with her in a way he isn’t with anyone else, telling her he’s happy for her but that he doesn’t like not seeing her. And she understands him completely. She knows the Sanctuary isn’t good for him, sees what no one else does. That’s why she offers to take his place.
