May 13, 1965: A full moon looms over the spectacular lightscape of “Missile Row” stretching north up the shoreline of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

     When driving through the main gate at Moffett Field in Mountain View, California, you are greeted by the sight of the 1/3 scale space shuttle wind tunnel model. During the 1970s, she underwent more than 200 hours of subsonic testing in the 40 by 80 foot wind tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center. When the tunnel was built in 1941, it was the largest in the world, now second only to the 80 by 120 foot wind tunnel now grafted onto the side of the original.

     In the days before computational fluid dynamics, testing this scale model was the best way to verify that the orbiter would fly true during the all important landing phase of the mission. These physical models are still often used today to verify that computer models are analyzed correctly.

Sitting down with a mug of coffee at three in the afternoon, Doctor Flug booted up his monitor and idly scrolled his inbox. It was mostly filled with advertisements from Black Hat Co (he had no choice in subscribing), as well as the various scientific journals he followed.

But to have an actual email from someone who was not a robot created to flood inboxes? That was a nice change.

He opened the message, sipping his coffee as he read through, making a noise of approval to himself.

He placed the mug down and began to write his reply.

‘Dr. Ramon,

Thankyou for your expression of interest. I am not legally allowed to share discoveries and ideas, due to the nature of my work and research, however a collaboration of work, on an outside project, would be a bit more ideal. Feel free to contact me outside of work hours, being nine to five, six days a week.

I look forward to your response.’

If he wasn’t under contract to perform research and create only for Black Hat Co. he would have been more than willing for a proper collaboration. But he wasn’t about to risk it.
