EXACTLY like there’s still a bad taste in my mouth from the initial decision but at least there’s improvement
Whelp, I’m pretty satisfied with the shows becoming free one month after the premiere. Buuuut it is still kinda disappointing what they didn’t go with this decision in the first place
now this I could actually get behind. because they aren’t completely alienating a large selection of their audience. having videos release a month early is a good reason to subscribe for those who can but it also still allows those who can’t afford it to be part of the community.
im glad they listened and took feedback from their fans. but also clearly they need to work on money management for the company since watcher was in danger of shutting down.
i was thinking this exact same thing with the comparison to Game Theory, the Try Guys, and GMM. it’s baffling that watcher seems to think they’re above these other channels to that point that everything will be behind a paywall.
Sooooo Watcher is currently imploding and I have a lot of thoughts about it, especially on my anxiety of what this might mean if their streaming service actually works.
Spoilers on today’s announcement video: Watcher is moving all of their content to their own streaming platform for a fee of $5.99 /month, and they are also archiving all their old content so we cannot watch it for free anymore. This is supposed to all happen by May 31st.
I fit within the majority of feeling disappointed and betrayed. I can’t afford that, and even if I could, why would I support that when other options have not been tried yet? A patreon? Exclusive content? More merch? It’s frustrating seeing creators we trusted to understand and empathize with their audience slap us across the face like this.
I keep thinking of other channels, other companies, that have been on YouTube for longer and have not done something like this to us. Game Theory, Try Guys, Smosh, Drawfee, the list goes on and on. I understand their content might be less work/ money to make, but I feel like most fans would be fine if the quality had to go down a little for us to keep everything free. We don’t need a whole complex set design for them to teach us history or weird mysteries and love it.
And lastly the reason why it gives me so much anxiety is if this actually does marginally well, we might see more YouTubers alienate their content like this for money. Not only would we have major streaming services to worry about, but now all these minor ones too for YouTube content creators that have 1/100th of the available media. I’m exhausted.
Waking up today and seeing that Watcher is leaving youtube COMPLETELY and taking all of their content with them, only to go behind a $60 yearly paywall was shocking.
I’ve followed their career for years (since buzzfeed) and now I won’t be able to anymore. Many of us won’t be able to anymore. And them saying “It’s affordable for everyone!” was so unbelievably tone deaf and ignorant.
I thought the CEOs of watcher knew their audience, but it’s clear now that they don’t. And perhaps never did. Shane Madej once said “Eat the rich, you can’t trust the upper crust,” and that sentence has ironically come full circle.
Ryan Bergara, Steven Lim, and Shane Madej have become the very things they swore to destroy. Buzzfeed was many horrible things, but even they never put Ryan, Steven, and Shane’s shows behind a paywall. The absolute irony is never ending. If they don’t listen to their audience and continue forward with this plan, I believe this will be the death of Watcher.
Monthly payment BS aside, and purely from like, a business standpoint,
HOW does watcher expect to expand their fan/userbase like this??? What person who isn’t familiar with any of their existing shows and hasn’t followed them will pay for it????
Even leaving all the old shows on YouTube, as much as I love them, what new fan would feel the desire to pay for their service when the market is SO saturated???
One of the main reasons that other streaming services work is because they have well known shows and movies as well as mass advertising for their originals???
Not to mention that one of the main issues people are concerned with right now is like, how EVERYTHING is a monthly payment and how all media is being paywalled???
Just. In what world would this be a good business move. Because it’s not this one.
watcher really said “we don’t wanna depend on money from these big companies (that can afford it) through ads” then proceeded to gouge their fans for $6 a month just to watch YouTube videos (not tv shows…come on guys)
i am making this puppet history - mystery files crossover my entire personality by the way. shane madej and the professor both ganging up on ryan?? they’ve made a personal living hell for ryan on his own show and i fucking love it.
Shane Madej is so good at ghost hunting because no matter how haunted a location is, he still carries himself with the same cheerful whimsy during the investigation, like a kid in a museum on a field trip
