As someone who was there in ‘23 I can relay that opinion on the RB19 was definitely not like what we’re seeing now for this McLaren. That’s because the RB19 still had visible weaknesses and tracks it had issues at and it was therefore clearly a Very Good car in the hands of a Truly Great driver. Yes some teams tried to claim cheating, but multiple inspections of the RB19 didn’t show anything dodgy, and all the drivers basically were like ‘of course he’s that far up the road, it’s Max and he has a great car’.

A huge difference to what we have right now with the McLaren somehow magically being fantastic at every track under every condition with every tyre type. And the other drivers have been deeply suspicious of it since last year. (It’s also suspicious to me how much McLaren has tried to downplay how good the car is, vs. Red Bull in ‘23 being openly proud of their good car)
