Glossary

Ableism: discrimination and social prejudice against disabled people and/or people who are perceived to be disabled

Cripping up/cripface: (1) normate pretending to be disabled (2) able-bodied actors playing disabled characters

Crippled punk: (1) a subculture of physically disabled people that embrace the identity of disabled and reject socially acceptable constructs of disability (2) a subculture created by Tyler Trewhella who described it as, “cripple punk rejects the “good cripple” mythos. cripple punk is here for the bitter cripple, the uninspirational cripple, the smoking cripple, the drinking cripple, the addict cripple, the cripple who hasn’t “tried everything””

Devotee: someone that has a fetish for physically disabled people (note: this is extremely controversial)

Disabled coding: establishing a character as disabled through visual, audible, or subtextual cues

Drugcore: aesthetics involving the paraphernalia and appearance of drugs. Used in an effort to normalize the use of medication

Hospital glam: fashion specifically intended to be worn during hospital admissions and doctors appointments

Medicalcore: aesthetics involving the paraphernalia and appearance of all things medical. Used in an effort to reclaim and normalize images of sickness and disability

Miracle cure: a narrative plot in which a disabled person becomes able-bodied, usually to obtain happiness or forgiveness

Models of disability: exemplified by Ju Gosling below

a. according to the Charity Model of Disability:

I organise social events for non-disabled people. This raises money to create jobs for non-disabled people. Then we provide the disabled people whom we think are deserving with the things that we think they need.

b. according to the Medical Model of Disability:

I invent and administer tests to classify disabled people according to what I think are their impairments. Then I carry out experiments to try to make them more like me. If I fail, I try to identify and kill them before they are born.

c. according to the Administrative Model of Disability:

I invent and administer tests to classify disabled people by what I think are their inabilities. Then I judge the minimum level of benefits and services that I think they need to survive.

d. according to the Social Model of Disability:

I fight against prejudice, discrimination and disabling environments. I fight for equal rights legislation and better health and social care provision. I also fight to eliminate the poverty, abuse, violence and war that cause the majority of impairments.

Mutant: someone who is born physically disabled and/or has a congenital disease

Mutate: an able-bodied person who becomes disabled 

Normate: (1) NTAB that uses their privilege to have authority over disabled people (2) “The constructed identity of those who, by way of the bodily configurations and cultural capital they assume, can step into a position of authority and wield the power it grants them” – Rosemary Garland Thompson

NTAB: (1) neurologically typical able-bodied (2) a person with no disabilities 

Spoon: 1 unit of physical, mental, or emotional energy according to spoon theory

Spoonie: someone with a chronic illness that subscribes to the spoon theory

Spoon theory: metaphor that is used to describe the amount of mental, physical, and emotional energy a person with chronic illness has available for daily activities and tasks as coined by Christine Miserandino

Transhuman: someone who exceeds average physical form and/or consciousness with the assistance of advanced technology (note: this is extremely controversial)

Voidpunk: subculture created by Milkchocolateowl and Arotaro in which people dehumanized by society (due to disability, identity, etc.) reject the identity of human and embrace the identity of nonhuman
