of course, this exact scenario won't happen, because that would need papyrus to be on screen in deltarune
i feel like the Roaring Knight could look straight at the camera and say "My name is December Holiday" and then immediately beat the shit out of papyrus and there would still be people saying that that's a red herring and the knight is actually papyrus

#deltarune#deltarune spoilers#i acknowledge that posting this is like striking a hornet's nest with the BlackKnife#but i think some people just. hate deergirls or something#this is not the game for skelebros angst. plus the knight literally kills darkners on screen#do you really think papyrus would do that? commit murder?

pyramid conspiracies are so funny cause like yeah theyre extremely impressive feats of engineering but its not like. crazy unbelievable. i think even as a kid if you asked me how i thought the pyramids were built id be like "i think they probably cut rocks into rectangles and stacked them. it probably took a very long time." aliens or power plants would not remotely be on my list of options yknow.

June for My Personified Months!
I don't have much else to say other than June is a sweltering time of year! I decided to make them a sun/light themed critter to represent this- no specific species in mind this time!
(I didn't think to make them pride themed.. maybe next year!)

Could you imagine the iterators with a mouth? Geez, it'd be so cursed!
I've seen people do that quite a bit and it can look really funky! Although idk loses the iterator puppet bingus magic to me...
I personally dislike doing that in my art. Not only do I enjoy the more alien and inhuman vibe of a face that isn't built to have a mouth and so emoting is a little different, but there's also something about them not having a mouth like metaphorically I suppose?
Having no say in their fate- don't get me wrong I think it's largely a stylistic choice more than anything, but it adds to me.
Moonie's frown is cute though, gaze upon her. You're old as rocks... why do u look like this..
BONUS ROUND:
Innie and Sunny!

there is an interstice
and on the way down there is a pearl that you can 1. bring to looks to the moon and gain knowledge, or 2. use to cross the scavenger toll and go west past the farm arrays. a pearl about the cycle itself.
and then a termination.
at the bottom of the pit, there is rot. and if you aren't quick to escape, you'll be consumed (by the wormgrass)
through here, there are even more obstacles
but a knowledgeable little creature is able to climb right back up to the top

ancient urban design analysis !!
we as a fandom got over ancient urban MUCH too fast. from a storytelling standpoint alone it's both devastating and breathtaking but as a visual artist it's by far one of the best regions in the game for me.
the first thing that came to mind when i was exploring it was the karma murals and the weird mechanical doorway/gate thing which are both reminiscent of five pebbles... we don't get to see him at all in the watcher but these rooms do an excellent job of bringing everything full circle (heh) and tying the dlc back into vanilla and downpour. it's a separate world and a separate experience but it's still the same game we know and love.
but MORE IMPORTANTLY. the backgrounds. a rain world region having a moving, animated background is pretty much... unheard of. i'm kind of a nerd so i have read a large part of the devlog and a small section of it was dedicated to talking about the way the perspectives would work in rain world, and the game being a sidescroller was ruled out pretty much from the beginning. it was also made very clear that the backgrounds would be static pieces. they do shift slightly when approaching the edges of the screen and there are plenty of smallish animations in lots of places (for example, the perpetual rain/snowfall in rivulet and saint respectively, or the sandstorm and the falling stars in outer rim) but as a general rule the backgrounds themselves don't have moving elements.
the room with these moving fans is already waayy out there for a rain world background. i don't know if it's animated frame-by-frame or just by spinning the fan elements in the programming (i know very little about coding so bear with me) but either way it's just so... bizarre?? which is really fitting for the themes of rain world and the way it's experienced: everything we've seen until ancient urban is a world in stasis, a world whose mechanical components have stopped moving. the ancients are gone and their technology is too, but here we see what it would be like before all that happened. the machinery is still functioning and it gives the impression of somewhere that is living and breathing instead of what is effectively a dead world which we are used to. the contrast is striking too because there's so little moving in the foreground; normally there's flowing water or creatures wandering around and nothing going on behind them but here we have a world before collapse, something that's still running and functioning, but you're all alone. it brings a different kind of melancholy than vanilla or downpour and even most of the regions in the watcher.
but was that it? no it was not. no they went even crazier.
holy fuck. i cried like ten times in ancient urban alone but i think this was the first room where i couldn't keep it together. the graphic design and color/lighting choice is jaw dropping enough on its own, but the fact that they're not only moving but walking by. it might not be something that everybody notices when they're playing but it's so incredible in rain world for something entirely in the background to be moving and animated like this. the strangest part about it is that they're not even creatures. the body part of guardians is considered a background element while still moving around but it's part of the creature. this is a fully animated background with proper lighting and everything and it's absolutely, positively gorgeous.
the symbolism too is something that caught my eye. similar to the fans, you're in front, alone, and all the movement and life is behind you. with the fans it doesn't mean quite as much because it's more a limitation of the 2 dimensional style than anything but here it shows just how far away you are from all of this. you can't reach the warmth behind the glass, and all you can do is move forward and keep going. it reflects watcher's story and rain world as a whole, symbolizing just how unforgiving and cold it is to be lost in a world like that. spinning top gives watcher some of that warmth and it's very present in the ending cutscene and menu selection artwork, but it can't escape that sense of sadness and loneliness. you can never go home again, indeed.
#rain world#watcher spoilers#ancient urban was SO FUCKING WILD#and maintaining the size ambiguity by making none of the inferrable scales line up was probably the funniest way they could've done it#OH BTW#there's some DIEGETIC FUCKING MUSIC in the ambience that comes from the other side of the fans#like. holy fucking shit.#'AUcafe'#but the slugcat is not a creature that goes to cafes. it is a creature of ditches and sewers and maintenance hallways#so we can only hear this bustle of people living their lives through an air vent#this game makes me unwell. 10163 hours

it feels like people are aproaching the game as a mystery to be solved like a FNAF title than a story thats been. planned.
yeah like. idk Undertale just did not have major mystery factors in this way and literally outside of the Chara/Frisk/player divide situation (which was a clear Payoff thing for a bunch of other things) i can't think of anything that was set up as a full Twist on the conclusions you could reach by looking around. like, ok, mettaton is presented as a robot alphys invented when he's not, but if you look around all the evidence as soon as the signed poster in alphys' lab points to his actual backstory pretty directly and with very little misleading. toby has never Punished people for putting the pieces together into a logical whole, y'know, there's no second order twist where mettaton goes "oh no some other ghost lived there it wasn't my house"
i don't know if that makes sense. hopefully it does
#it's always been weird to me that people treat the knight as some kinda whodunit#when that's clearly not what toby's going for with it. like. the knight is very much riffing on Recurring But Not Final jrpg villains#like. golbez yknow#ch3 was like the perfect time to introduce the knight i really don't know why people were expecting it to be saved til ch5 or even ch7#honestly toby talking about the stairs opening idea should've been enough to make people realise the knight isn't a Mystery Villain lol
