Tumblr media
At only 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) and with an impressive wingspan of 1 meter (3 feet), Scarlet Macaws are the largest parrot in the world and can live to 40-50 years of age, and sometimes until 80 years.
The birds have strong beaks and claws, and in the wild can be very aggressive during mating season. (October to April).
Habitat loss and illegal trapping are the reasons that the bird has landed on the endangered list. Look but don’t touch!

What To Expect On the Night Tour in Drake Bay
Many of the residents of Drake Bay are nocturnal, so it only makes sense that Drake Bay Greenleaf would offer a night tour! This new Costa Rica jungle tour hotel has set up the perfect after dinner outing that may leave guests feeling a little squeamish before crawling into their beds.
Departing the hotel at 7:30, our group, led by our fearless guide ‘Tico’, sauntered off into the night. As with all wildlife tours, you never know what you might encounter, so we kept our eyes peeled for movement.
Our guests were hoping to see a sloth on their first tour, but at night it is hard to see them but we did find a sloth high up in the tree, however too far for any good pictures.
Tumblr media
We soon found a Blunthead Tree Snake or Imantodes cenchoa, which is not venomous, yet can certainly raise the hairs on the back of your neck as it stretches out to catch dinner. This night hunter is able to stealthily capture their sleeping prey, usually lizards, without climbing the vegetation and waking them.
Tumblr media
Our guide then found a tailless whip scorpion, or Amblypygi. These harmless creatures look fierce but lack the sting of a true scorpion, and in fact are neither scorpion nor spider, but they are arachnids. They can emit an acidic vinegar-like substance if threatened, but for the most part are pretty chill to humans. That does not mean that they are so nice to prey. THe barbed palps on their mouth ensure that nothing gets
Tumblr media
We were fortunate to find a real scorpion, a bark scorpion (Centruroides margaritatus), and our guide wisely did not pick it up. It was climbing a tree so we had a perfect eye-level view!

It's easy to spot the toucancillo, which no one believes is his real name. but it really is! The Fiery-billed Aracari (Toucancillo Piquianaranjado) reminds us of the toucan, and in Costa Rica adding illo to the end of something means that it is small, or a small toucan.

The yellow-bellied siskin (Spinus xanthogastrus) can normally be found between Drake Bay and the Osa Peninsula, down to Ecuador and even Bolivia.
Tumblr media
The beautiful toucan that everyone knows and loves is one of 6 toucans that you will find at Drake Bay Greenleaf, Costa Rica! You have already seen the toucancillo or Fiery-billed Aracari, and this famous face is the Black-mandibled toucan or Chestnut mandibled toucan or Swainson’s toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus swainsonii) while the rainbow-billed or Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) has a green, red, and yellow beak.
Tumblr media
The Red-capped Manakin (Ceratopipra mentalis) is common throughout Central America and western South America. This bright-headed bird has become famous in videos for ‘moon walking’ and with over 50 varieties of manakins, there is no shortage of courtship dances.
Tumblr media
Enthusiastic birders have seen and documented an amazing 850 bird species – in Costa Rica, roughly 10 percent of all of the birds in the world!
