I hope you become a singer. Actually, not just any singer. But one whose songs are played everywhere, like on the TV, in the streets and in restaurants. Become so famous that no one would ever dare to mistreat you.

March 29th | DAY 5: IN DEFENSE OF THE CANDY FEMALE LEAD
Here is a space to show love to your favourite Candy female leads, also known as Cinderella female leads. If you have no idea what that means, here is a great definition: “A “Candy girl” is described as a woman who has unfortunate circumstances but is 1) hardworking, 2) cheerful, and 3) innocent. The definition also extends to being able to catch the eye of a wealthy man (or men, for that matter). She’s basically Cinderella without the fairy godmother and with a more complicated life.” (Taken from: K-Drama 101: What is a Candy Girl?)

kww2018 Day Eight: Writer or Free Day
Let’s hear it for the women who write the women characters we adore! I have a lot of favorites that aren’t represented here, but they’re all heroines who’ve touched me and stayed with me.
Byung Hee was the first drama heroine I fell hard for. I was in my (early) mid-twenties when I first watched her bumbling her way through her career and love life, and she left me with a bittersweet feeling I cherished, because she made me think I’d be okay, even if I didn’t have it all figured out when I was older. Kim Do Woo is one of my favorite writers because she marries wistfulness, longing, and hope together so well, and she always allows her heroines to dream and to find a bit of freedom and joy, even though they don’t adhere to societal expectations of how they “should” look or where they “should” be in their careers.
On days I’m feeling low I remember Na Ji Young saying, “Just do as I have and give up. Don’t expect anything at all.” It reminds me my experiences with dejection, disappointment, alienation, and despair aren’t things I feel just because I’m some unique kind of failure in the world, but emotions that run so deep that an artist like Kwon Hye Ji decided to write a story where they’re addressed and dealt with kindness and hopefulness. Ji Young makes me feel less lonely.
Choi Hee Jin is everything joyful—she’s lively, loves to laugh, and transparent in her thoughts and emotions. But my favorite thing about her is how Song Jae Jong pulled a coup by giving a lighthearted, even ditzy heroine an immense amount of power. Hee Jin can’t fight, she doesn’t run around with a sword or a gun, she isn’t a high-powered attorney or doctor or plutocrat, and she isn’t even that well regarded in her chosen profession. But through the power of her desires she’s able to save a person’s life and re-write history, as well as her own narrative.
I’m still trying to figure out why 2022 was so hard for me, but I already know one of the things that made it easier—seeing Lee Young Yi tackle her first office job, raise her daughter, and navigate delicate family dynamics with both levelheadedness and deep emotion. In her Na Seung Hyun managed to create the platonic ideal of a heroine in a daily family makjang—young single motherhood, orphanhood, childhood cancer, manslaughter, continued-love-through-organ-donation, secret chaebol reveals, and all manner of makjang shenanigans came Young Yi’s way, and she met each with a grace and naturalism that had me cheering for her throughout.

Interest of Love and an image from Individualist Ms Ji Young. Women marked by their loneliness, a highly guarded and world weary nature, the constant male desire for them, the emphasis on their interior life, complicated relationships with their parents, their homes are sanctuaries for the outside world
