I know the post mentions characters from classical literature in general, but I'll focus on 'antagonistic' characters because they have the most physical changes.
It depends on how you look at it. In the past, bad guys were always represented as 'UGLY' because they were the bad guys. And of course, the good ones are always the attractive ones.
Now, it's okay for them to vary; they won't always be 'ugly', and they won't always be 'handsome'. For me, it all depends on what character you're writing.
If you want a 'villain' who's a wolf in sheep's clothing, he'll be handsome. If your villain is a classic horror villain, he'll obviously be unpleasant to look at (like Nosferatu). But if the character's appearance doesn't affect (really) the story, use creative freedom.
I could use Erik from the Phantom of the Opera as an example, he has had so much physical evolution that he is summarized as a handsome talented guy with a defect on his face, but his appearance doesn't define him, but rather his actions, his personality. Whether he is 'handsome' or 'ugly', he's a tragic, questionable and pathetic man, I love him.
So, morally questionable people like Ebenezer Scrooge won't necessarily be scary or 'ugly' for being a greedy jerk. It depends on how you want your adaptation/version, just have fun.
Besides, I'm not going to compare the animation of the Disney movie, which is scary on its own, to the Netflix one, which is more cartoonish. They were different techniques. The Polar Express already scared me.
And I, who am obsessed with ACC, have seen all the adaptations (movies, plays, ballet...) that exist so far and for me, none of the Ebenezer Scrooge have seemed 'ugly', many are actually handsome (to me).
Disney created a stereotype and now popular culture thinks Ebenezer is like that.
I find it very interesting how designs and casting for classic literature characters have evolved from the earlier adaptations to the modern ones we see today.
A lot of that is definitely the target audience and how media has influenced how we see the characters.
However looking at actors and designs from 20th century retellings and comparing them to 2010’s tv shows, it just.
idk i feel like its kinda silly and fascinating to see how distanced we’ve come from the original text but not necessarily in a bad way
I mean just look:

A Christmas Carol's Ebenezer Scrooge (2009, 2022)

Edward Hyde (1931, 2015)

Sherlock Holmes (1939, 2022)
like idek dude
I guess we decided they needed to drink the yassification juice after a couple of decades and i kinda love it yet at the same time question mark ???
edit: also someone mentioned that TGS isn't a show and i sincerely apologize for not putting that in here my brain was lagging bad but i meant to refer to different types of media and it ended up looking out of place ;-;
anyways i just hope yall get my point lmao
