Dreammare - Flower Language
[a soft Dreamtale epilogue featuring Error, Ink, and implications of Dream x Nightmare]
Grass swayed in the light summer breeze. Green rolling hills stretched out for as far as the eye could see, spaced out like the beat of a slow and steady metronome. It was peaceful. A sea of solitude only interrupted by the rustle of plants, warble of birds, and the two skeletons trudging up the slope of the highest grassy peak.
“Ruru,” Ink whined. “Why are we even here? It’s so boring.”
Error’s frustrated sigh glitched along several pitches, but he didn’t stop walking. Ink skipped around in front of him, full of effervescent energy and unending complaints. Curse the damned apple twins for choosing such an inconvenient spot.
“You annoying squid! Like I told you the last five times - you asked me to bring you here.”
“Well I don’t remember that,” Ink pouted. They threw themself on the ground and rolled backward down the hill, passing Error with a giggle.
“Oi!” Error shouted. “The longer you faff around, the longer we have to be here. Idiot ink splotch.”
The insult didn’t sound half as mean as Error intended. He regretted ever promising to bring Ink to Dreamtale. It was the same tedious process every year.
“Fine, you’re no fun at all.” Ink scrabbled on their hands and feet to catch up as Error approached the top of the hill.
“I still don’t know what could be so important.” Ink complained airily and almost ran into Error’s back. He had come to an abrupt stop. Ink pinwheeled their arms to avoid touching him and looked over Error’s shoulder curiously.
An enormous tree stump stood before them. It was taller than Ink. Yellow and blue-purple flowers grew around the pettified roots.
Ink crouched to take a closer look. Buttery yellow nasturtiums with soft round petals intertwined with tall, vibrant asters. The delicate scent wafted into Ink’s nostril cavity and made them sneeze.
“These are so pretty!” Ink cheered. They pulled out a canvas and a paint palette. “This must be why we’re here.”
“Sort of,” Error hedged. “Don’t stop yet. I’ll show you a better spot. It’s your favorite.”
He climbed up the stump, cursing when his flipflops slipped against the time-smoothed bark. Ink tucked the art supplies under their arm and followed. If there was a favorite spot had they come here before?
Ink felt a little bad that they didn’t even remember the story of Dreamtale. The AU was dormant and empty. It was strange that Error hadn’t destroyed it to conserve energy.
Error had to pull Ink onto the stump by their scarf in the end.
“Oh! Wow!” Ink exclaimed happily. From here they could see the flowers spreading in a ring around the stump. It was a clear sunny day and the view was beautiful. In the distance was the hazy shadow of the ruins where Error had opened the dimensional portal.
Ink sat down, crossed their legs, and began to paint. Error stood next to them as Ink incessantly nattered about nothing and everything.
“Did you know that nasturtiums and asters are both perennial flowers? That means they die each winter and grow back every spring. I haven’t ever seen them growing together like this - but you said this is my favorite spot so maybe I have!”
“It’s a weird combo though. Nasturtiums are usually associated with victory and joy. Asters are more elegant, but they are also used to represent love and wisdom.”
Error grumbled in acknowledgement as Ink’s watercolors bled delicately across the fiber of the canvas.
“So I guess that their meaning is something like ‘victorious love’ or ‘joyful wisdom’. Maybe both! What do you think Ruru? Do you know who planted these? Did I get it right?”
“I knew them. That sounds about right.” Error watched the flowers form under Ink’s brush. He had almost a hundred pictures of these flowers, each similar but unique. Ink always gave it to him as a present.
“Can I meet them?” Ink asked. They looked up at Error with mismatched eyelights. The gold star and purple moon lingered in their eye sockets for a moment. Then Ink blinked and the shapes turned into a question mark and exclamation point.
“Yeah, you’ll meet them again someday.” Error said. Ink huffed and went back to painting. Waiting was no fun!
The two skeletons continued to argue companionably under the bright sun. Behind the god of destruction and the muse of creation, a small sapling spouted from the center of the stump. Its tender leaves fluttered in the wind.
The new Tree of Feelings grew a little taller and stronger each year. When it was fully grown the twin lovers would return, united and sure in their purpose. Then the soulmates would join in the multiverse’s dance of power once more.
Until then Error would remember and Ink would forget.

Dreammare - Forbidden Fruit
[Swap!Dream x Swap!Nightmare]
“No, Night. Please -” Dream begs. His voice is hoarse from screaming. His skull pounds with agony as he arches off the cold marble floor. Molten gold wings grotesquely sprout from his upper spine. It is the near final part of his transformation and Night holds the last piece in their trembling hands.
The last sacred apple gleams crimson against Night’s pale bones. The cultist who raised them made the twins pick the final harvest from the Tree of Feelings before it was cut down just yesterday. There would be no more apples after this.
This had always been their destiny. The twin guardians must eat the apples and ascend to godhood on their 20th birthday. But to eat those sacred fruits was to be transformed. The cultists had raved in ecstatic bliss of how the intensity of the pain would distill and amplify the very essence of the twins’ beings. The years of worship would finally pay off as the twins became more powerful than mortal comprehension.
But Dream could not stand to see his twin soul suffer. Night was perfect as they were. Dream loved every part of them, from their standoffish facade to the underlying tenderness which they hid from everyone but him. Dream knew that they longed to escape the cult and live a quiet life, surrounded by books and the few things they held dear. The change would destroy any chance of that life.
So Dream took action. He stole the apples. He barricaded himself and Night in the cold ceremony chamber.
Night had cried as Dream explained his plan. They had tried to change his mind, but when Dream was determined he always got what he wanted. At least this way one of them could be free.
They sat side-by-side on the stone cold floor. Night held the basket of apples on their lap. Dream rested his skull on Night’s shoulder like they had a thousand times before.
And then he ate.
The first apple was sweet and tart on his tongue and so was the one after that. The third caused his jaw to tense as it puckered. Each was more bitter than the next. Magic coursed through his body, shaping him into something new.
He couldn’t stop. He couldn’t give up. The pain swept him up to a crest so high that there was no way down. Delirium overtook Dream. He couldn’t move, but pleaded for more.
So Night moved the basket aside and rested Dream’s skull on their lap, guiding the apples to Dream’s gaping mouth. They sobbed as Dream’s bones cracked and lengthened, magic leaking from his writhing body and surrounding them in a pool of golden lifesblood. The wings emerged last.
“No,” Dream begs again, staring up at his twin’s devastatingly sweet smile. One of Night’s hands caresses his fevered cheek bone. He is too exhausted to reach for the final apple that Night clutches protectively to their chest.
“I won’t let you go alone. I can’t do it. I’m sorry, Dream.” Night kisses Dream’s forehead.
“Please don’t!” Dream cries.
Night brings that last red apple to their pristine ivory teeth and bites down. Juice runs down their jaw. Their soft lavender eyelights glimmer as the color of their magic shifts, their own transformation now unstoppable.
“You would’ve been free.” Dream chokes out.
“There is no mortal life worth living where we are not together.” Night reassures him. “Nothing can separate us now.”
Dream shakes with anguish and joy as Night devours the entire apple, core and all. He laughs high and broken. His secret wish was fulfilled - that they would be doomed to eternity together. Night holds him and kisses Dream’s apple bitter mouth.
