clark was still trying to wrap his head around the fact that there was another survivor from krypton. he had so many questions. when? how? had she known about him? but, they hadn't quite made it to that stage yet. there'd been too much chaos that he hadn't been able to properly process it.

at the very least, there seemed to be an incredibly protective group of people around kara.

" i understand your anger, " he holds his hands out in front of him unsure if he's going to have to duck or try to block the exit. " but there has to be a better way. who? and what happened before i got here? "

several bundles of chopped firewood had been brought inside. clark was far too hot for the fireplace but he carefully stacked several on the iron grate. old newspapers were stuffed into the free space to serve as kindling for the larger pieces. he lit one match and then two, setting the paper on fire until the blaze was so hot he had to take a step back.

the matches were tossed into the fire. clark wiped his hands on the denim covering his thighs.

" alright, that should keep you stocked up for a while. what else can i help with? "

while the pile on his desk he was hiding behind would indicate he was busy, clark managed to talk his way into a a clear evening. he'd owe lois in the long run. he'd also highly regret it once he read the proof and was faced with spelling errors that would blow his mind.

clark actually sighed at that, followed by a grin and a shake of his head.

" no, " the journalist finally looks up. that grin only manages to grow at the sight of delilah beneath the fluorescent lighting. one of which was flickering several feet beyond her. he'd forgotten to mention it to maintenance because he was so nose deep in his notes from an interview performed several days prior.

" as it happens, i'm not. lois wants to tackle some of this on her own. " hands hover in the air for a few seconds while clark takes mental stock of what's in front of him. then there's a haphazard pile pushed together and set to the side, finally revealing a keyboard. " want to go somewhere? "

clark was sitting on the edge of a building overlooking the bay that lines metropolis. red boots click back and forth against the texture on the outside of the building. he likes it up here. it's not exactly quieter up high but it's easier to block out the white noise like the traffic and the electricity.

he can feel batman's eyes on him. he feel that broody huff building in the other's chest and clark finds a small smile stretching his lips. what would it be like to have a more personal relationship with someone as determined to keep the people safe as the bat? clark doesn't agree with most some of how the black knight does things but he also understands gotham is a little more difficult on the soul.

" sometimes secrets are innocent, you know, " the hero muses more to himself than to the other. with the things they've seen and done to keep people safe it's hard to remember that. for instance, the little white lie to keep a christmas present a surprise. or, the cover he has to keep in order to keep a story as confidential as possible at the daily planet.

finally, clark stands up. hands wipe together to brush off any of the roof's dust. " i had a cerrtain cat traipse through metropolis. you wouldn't happen to know anything about that. would you? "

more than anything, he always wants lois to stay. she has this amazing ability to make him feel normal. as much as they push and pull, tease and play, clark always feels so safe around her. he feels seen. lois is the physical embodiment of everything clark wants to protect in the world. whenever he feels like he's falling off the edge she's always there to pull him right back.

" i... " clark takes off his blazer a little too slowly. it's folded methodically on his arm until he's ready to set it on the arm of the nearby couch. when he'd snuck out of the daily planet to attend to some screaming he didn't think the sight would shake him to his core. the kryptonian never understood how the one thing he wanted so badly was something others used and abused for their own benefit.
