To all of you who participated last year - we have changed a few of the rules, but overall things have stayed the same. To everyone new: WELCOME!

Once again my hand slipped, ahem.

Over the years, Helena’s gotten used to being alone when she wakes from yet another nightmare.

She’s learned to wake soundlessly from them, her adoptive fathers in Sicily of course have known she has them, haven’t been really able to help her with them, being the hardened assassins they are, but they have taught her how to hold the screams back, telling her an assassin shouldn’t wake up screaming and gain attention; and more often than not, she has woken in a cold sweat in her room back there, her heart racing and a cry stuck in her throat, and often just has sat in her bed then, trying to calm herself in the quiet darkness. 

The best nights have been those when she’s been so tired and exhausted from her training that she’s been asleep before her head even has hit the pillow, because during those nights, she’s slept dreamlessly until the next morning; those nights have gotten less though as she has built up strength and stamina, and while fighting crime in Gotham does take its toll, she’s hardly ever so tired anymore that she sleeps dreamlessly.

Part of her has hoped that maybe, the nightmares might stop once she’s finished her mission, but they haven’t done her that favour; they still come, not every night, but often enough to convince her they won’t go away anytime soon, finished mission or not, and she starts to resign to the fact that she’ll have to deal with them for the rest of her life.

She wonders if she’ll get used to them at some point if they’ll keep coming, if a person can get used to something like that; and as Dinah and she start growing closer, change from teammates to friends and from that to girlfriends, Helena is glad that she has learned to wake quietly from her nightmares.

Dinah is the one person who gets to see her softer, more vulnerable side, but even despite that, Helena doesn’t want to wake her with her nightmares several times a week, not wanting to be the one responsible for her losing sleep. 

What Helena hasn’t expected is the fact that Dinah is a light sleeper, and when bad dreams tear her out of her sleep at Dinah’s place for the first time, Dinah is pretty much awake a second after Helena.

“Shit”, Helena lets out, more in reaction to waking Dinah up than at the content of her nightmare, that has been the same as always, and while it leaves her in a cold sweat and with clammy skin, it’s nothing new, “I… I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be”, Dinah tells her, simultaneously wrapping both arms around her, and her touch is warm and gentle, Helena has experienced her touch many times before this moment, but it’s different somehow this time, it grounds her in a way she never has experienced before after a nightmare, slows her racing heart and evens out her breath.

She’s gotten used to being alone when waking from yet another nightmare, but as Helena relaxes into Dinah’s embrace and feels her rub her back, she realizes she doesn’t have to do this on her own anymore, and when she falls asleep again a short while later, nestled into Dinah’s embrace, nothing disturbs her sleep anymore.

When I started reading fan fiction I didn't think I liked AUs (lol). But now, a year and a half later, I love them SO MUCH! And I think that's very largely your fault! So thank you!

I now have like two different Dinah/Helena AUs ideas fully formed in my head (and maybe even bits written down 👀).

Anyways, I just really love the worlds you create for them. SO FUN! thank you

Dinah has never seen Helena asleep before.

That is perhaps not strange, they have been working together for a while, but while they do share a base for their work as the Birds of Prey, they each have their own home, Dinah knows Helena sleeps at their base sometimes, but she never has actually seen her asleep there, the assassin always having been up and about whenever Dinah’s arrived there.

She sees her asleep now, and while that is a bit annoying as she’s quite awake, it’s also oddly fascinating, and it surprises her a bit that the way she can’t stop looking at Helena isn’t waking the woman in question up.

She’s been a bit apprehensive when she’s realized there’s only one bed in the room they’d share for the night, very aware of the crush she has on Helena and of the fact it won’t go away anytime soon; Helena herself has seemed unperturbed, but then, the woman is quite stoic, except for the moments her rage makes an appearance, so if she has any thoughts and feelings about sharing a bed with Dinah, she’s been quite good at hiding them. 

If there are any thoughts and feelings, they haven’t kept Helena from falling asleep at least, as the assassin has been out practically seconds after her head has touched the pillow; and while she sleeps deeply and - thankfully - without snoring, Dinah lies next to her and studies her. 

It’s the first time she sees Helena so completely relaxed and calm - even though the woman sleeps with her arms crossed, which looks uncomfortable, but it doesn’t seem to disturb Helena’s sleep -, even when they are having drinks after a successful mission, Dinah can tell Helena is always on guard, always sitting with her back to the wall so she can keep an eye on the room and always glancing towards the door of whatever bar they have chosen for the night when a new guest enters, but now as she sleeps, she looks relaxed and somehow younger, Dinah somewhat mesmerized as she looks at her.

Her gaze starts wandering, from the assassin’s face down her bare arms, taking in the scars there, thin white lines Dinah knows are from knife wounds and thicker marks which have different origins, from broken glass to bicycle chains and even bullets, some of them looking newer than others, and Dinah knows exactly which ones have been gained since they’d started working together.

Perhaps, she ponders as she lies there, it is strange to know this so well, as it shows how much time she spends looking at Helena, but then, Helena is very nice to look at, Dinah’s not sure the woman is actually aware of this, but it’s true, and she’s not planning to refuse that eye candy any time soon. 

Helena shifts a bit, and Dinah freezes, wondering if her staring will wake the assassin up after all; then, Helena stills though, and remains asleep, and Dinah relaxes again as well, by now feeling her eyelids grow heavy too, holding back a hearty yawn as she’s fairly certain that would wake Helena up after all. 

She hesitates for a moment, not sure how the reaction might be, and she really doesn’t want to get punched by accident - before she tells herself to not be stupid, Helena surely would be aware enough to realize it’s her fast enough, and reaches out, placing her hand on Helena’s arm, feeling the muscle beneath her fingers tense even as Helena remains asleep. 

Then, she feels Helena relax noticeably again, and actually hers her let out a little content sigh, and when Dinah falls asleep as well a short while later, she’s smiling to herself, her hand remaining where it is for the rest of the night.

And there was only one bed😳
