Yeahhhhh so I just went to watch this movie, and ya'll are wrong as Fuck

1: Nani doesn't give up custody of Lilo so she can go to college. She was forced to surrender custody after Lilo was taken to the hospital in an ambulance (from drowning) and they didn't have health insurance. The social worker said the government would pay this huge bill but only if Nani let's her go. It becomes a commentary on how families are ripped apart if they can't afford to stay together. It's resolved by the community stepping in in the form of Nani's neighbor (David's elderly grandmother) fostering Lilo so they can stay together, and that is INCREDIBLY true to how Hawaiian communities come together to raise children instead of leaving an 18 year old to raise her 6 year old sister. Lilo then encourages Nani to go to college for Nani's sake because, yeah, she wants that for her. Congrats on missing the bigger message

2: there was a stich fart joke, but it was a blink and you miss it sort of thing

3: I completely missed the Jumba fart joke

4: there was absolutely tourism commentary. Lilo trolls the FUCK out of the tourists lmao. It's just that she's no longer making fun of fat people in the process

5: yeah, no Gantu. Jumba stays bad. It sucks. But Cobra becomes Pleakly's earth partner so A gay ship is still on lol

6: yeahh, no ugly duckling story

7: yeah stitch never reveals his alien form; he doesn't have his moment with Nani. She refuses to leave him behind all the same

8: PLEAKLY 100% CROSS DRESSES AND IT'S STILL FUNNY AS FUCK LMAO. His disguise is that of a man... who likes wearing woman's clothes because they look pretty and he doesn't understand the binary. I loved it

9: they did forget about Leroy's origins, but it doesn't really matter. The kid i was sitting beside started crying "no! I don't want him to become Leroy!!" Besides Jumba and the gerbil worked together so it's not like they didn't share notes

10: the ohana scene was absolutely not played off as a joke and was infact a lot more painful/ serious to watch because it was about their dead parents and how Nani feels like SHE was left behind

11: tik tak lmao

12: the evil scientist didn't have a German accent AND THAT'S A GOOD THING, FUCK STEREOTYPES

The cartoon is still the better movie, but the live action does a few things BETTER than the cartoon if you want to give it a watch. The usual issues with Live Action and Disney apply, but ya'll. This movie still showcased a lot of native Hawaiian values and hired mostly native actors. There will be racists trying to tank the movie by using shit like the post above to convince you it sucked before you ever watch it.

Not that it was rigged, no, but there is an investigative journalist for The Guardian and New York Times who is finding evidence of widespread voter suppression. It's a slow process because the EAC are reluctant to release this information to him, but he is gathering real evidence of election interference

Dunno what can be done regarding our current nightmare, but at the very least, we need to prevent this from happening again

I've always headcanoned that they were only school friends until the portal accident tied them together *outside* of school - which is why they know so little about each other's personal lives. Sam is obvious (Danny and Tucker didn't know that she liked playing video games, loves the winter holidays, and is rich af), but an argument can also be made for Danny and Tucker given how Danny just... doesn't really understand Tucker (insecurities and phobias and such).

So, in a way, it's not just being teenagers. They're learning about each other too

I know I focus a lot on Danny's complicated relationship with his parents, but there's really not enough on how messy his relationship with his friends can be.

Because in some ways, they are the best friends. They're amazing. There is no amount of crazy, no amount of terrifying, no amount of danger that can make them abandon him. They are ride or die to the end.

But they are also such teenagers.

And that's fine! They're allowed to be! It doesn't make them bad people or even bad friends. But God, these two are Danny's only support system, and emotionally speaking, they can be... kind of unreliable.

Because both of them? Are constantly trampling on Danny's feelings. Which Danny has a lot of, all the time, because his life is awful, and Sam and Tucker... don't really seem to respect that. (Again, perfectly understandable! They're teenagers and they've become used to this as their new normal.)

Every time Danny breaks down from the stress (WHICH HAPPENS A LOT) Sam and Tucker bitch about it, and his behavior, and how rude he's being. Whenever he's in a bad mood, he's a buzzkill, he's belligerent. When he's doing something just for himself, he's abandoning them, he's irresponsible. A lot of times, during intensely traumatic events, they openly blame him for what's happening.

(In fact, Sam and Tucker are a big part of why I hold 'struggles to assert himself' as a cornerstone of Danny's character.)

And they're kids, it's not their job to be Danny's therapists or his emotional sponge, and they should absolutely not be his sole source of support... but it's also so, so bad for him. Have I mentioned that Danny's life is a nightmare of abuse conditioning? Because it is.

And this is of course not the only or even the most important aspect of their friendship! But it's such a recurring theme (both with them and in Danny's life in general) that I'd love to address it at some point.
