HOME ROOM :: Marc Boone’s classroom art studio

It’s a known fact we all live with - as a teaching artist, you’re always a house guest, working in someone else’s kitchen. But, there are cases when you have the chance to teach in your own CLASSROOM ART STUDIO. Marc Boone, after 10+ years as a teaching artist, is now ensconced in his PS 51 Art Studio. Thank you Princpal Hong! This is going to be a banner year of art-making and creating for the young artists at PS 51. Below see the way the class starts...

When students arrive, they sit down and spend the first 15 minutes working independently.

The materials will be out, waiting for them: colored pencils, pencils, markers, glue, pencil sharpeners. And, a posable figure!

Makers Make :: Cars
It’s always exciting to make thing MOVE! Here the MAKERS at Bronx Letters used some everyday (but cool!) materials like straws, popsicle sticks, & cardboard to make a car - with a real engine. The project finale - a DRAG RACE!

FIRST FOUR :: CARLA :: MARBLE HILL

Carla teaches 9th and 10th Grades at Marble Hill School for International Studies. The first four lessons of the year focused on LINE and drawing from MEMORY. Using Shantell Martin as inspiration, artists were free to explore drawing as a continuous act, to question who can be an artist, and to communicate a narrative through abstraction.

The outcome of these explorations was a surprising mix of 3-Dimensionality and line. In a limited palette, these objects are layered with meaning.

Marc Boone Presents...
Here’s a sampling of the incredible social justice posters Marc did with his 5th graders at PS 51. These images were the result of a semester-long exploration of the way artists use images and text to talk back to the world.
