Illustrator Personal Branding - Shantell Martin (shantellmartin.art)

To match within their artistic style Shantell Martin uses a black and white colour palette throughout their personal branding, using a thick, bold, blocky sans serif typeface which compliments their hand drawn work. Shantell uses a direct, straightforward but informative tone of voice, sharing their experience within the creative industry. The layout of their website is professional and engaging, using motion graphics and user interaction to make their work dance around the screen. Shantell has many links to their social media platforms, such as instagram (@shantell_martin), twitter (@shantell_martin), YouTube (@shantellmartin), Facebook (@shantell Martin), Tumblr (@shantellmartin) and Soundcloud (@shantell Martin). As an established illustrator, Shantell's website does the most in promoting their work but also the successes they have had as an illustrator, showing off an impressive clientele.

Portfolio Research - Shantell Martin

Another designers work we had been admiring, was Shantell Martin's. What stood out to me straight away from Martin's portfolio, was how well she combined photography with design. I love how when we visit her website her homepage is a photograph of her lying down against her drawing canvas' holding a black marker. I feel as if this really personalizes who she is and conveys it to everyone visiting her website, which is great because we immediately know what she is about and I think thats important for me to keep in mind when I am designing my own portfolio. Before seeing a portfolio like Martin's, I can honestly say I would have been slightly against uploading a picture of myself onto my portfolio. However, this has definitely moved it up in my viewpoint; it has made me realise how effective it can be!

I am a huge fan of how Shantell Martin has utilised a black and white composition throughout her entire website. I think the simplicity of the colour scheme keeps the portfolio looking really professional, sharp and compliments everything really well. (Even down to her wearing all black in her photograph!). I think it's amazing how the homepage and whole website in general is so Interactive. When travelling down the page, we notice that when we hover over her art set as the background picture, the sketches move and perform different animations! There is a clickable 'Play' button near the bottom of the page. When pressed, a menu appears on the left hand side of the screen allowing us to change how the sketches interact with each other, the speed at which they move and the area the animated sketches cover with our cursor, which is incredible and such a pleasant user experience. I think this really epitimises how Martin combines art with design and fittingly uses this as one of her main strengths.

When we click on the hamburger icon, a giant navigation is brought up for us. Normally I am not a fan of hamburger icons if the designer has a full page of space, however, I can understand that Martin did not want this bold, block navigation to take anything away from her homepage.

When I checked out her work section I seen that her different projects were shown to users by using different images of the work. These images interact with the user when we hover over them and can be clicked to then bring us to a detailed case study of the project. On the left hand side of the page there is a scrolling navigation made up of five dots which change colour when we move down onto the next project. I’m beginning to see more and more of these subtle features on various portfolios and believe I will incorporate something similar to this on my own portfolio. The only criticism I would have (and i’m picking at scraps) would be that I think the work section of Martin’s portfolio could distinguish a bit more clearly just when we are moving onto the next project. I know that it is the style of her design but I personally feel it is perhaps all a bit too much the same and sometimes unclear when we are scrolling down the page.

Overall I think in terms of Interaction it is the best portfolio I have ever been on and I have certainly gathered a lot of inspiration from it that I plan to use to improve the design of my own portfolio.
