naruto modern au but the sannin are just the worst polycule you've ever met. like they're all in their 40's, tsunade is the sole bread-winner because she's a doctor, jiraya self-publishes erotica that only three people consistently read, orochimaru is fully unemployed but refuses to do chores (mostly gets away with it because they have permanent nerve and muscle damage in both of their arms because of The Incident) (The Incident is also the reason the three of them broke up for like four years before getting back together, much to the dismay of literally everyone around them)

Naruto is missing so much disability in its story. Disability often gets hidden away irl yeah, but in a world of frequent war and violence and conflict and child soldiers, it’s ridiculously unrealistic that disability isn’t prevalent, visible, and impactful in Naruto.
In 2022, 50% of American veterans were disabled. Number is said to likely under reported due to military culture. Konoha is engaged in war and conflict at home and away and much more frequently than the US. It would be realistic for the overwhelmingy majority of characters in Naruto to have disabilities.

it's so funny how sannin era flashbacks in naruto always try to portray orochimaru as like. a particularly weird kid to foreshadow their descent into immorality, but they always just end up coming across as mentally ill and horribly mistreated by everyone else instead. it's entirely unintentional on kishimoto's part but it's a strangely succinct allegory for how mentally ill kids are actually treated, what with every other character assigning malice to the actions of an unwell 12 year old baby snake just living their life.
trying to make orochimaru seem like they were destined to be evil from the start just honestly makes me sympathize with them more, because like. they'll show kid orochi and the narration will be like "this is actually literally the spawn of satan and we have to kill it before it grows" and i'll be like that's a baby? that's a little baby child who wants attention and love.

saw someone make a post calling Obito a redditor, which is boring but fine, and THEN saying he would be a pro-lifer and like. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I just forget that some people engage in Naruto fandom off of Tumblr, where Obito is the Put A Bomb On A Baby guy.

A combined version of the rant I went on after someone commented on one of my posts:
I have a LOT of thoughts about the… civillian? normal? NON-shinobi side of shinobi clans and i always considered Uchiha to be more nomadic, in contrast to the Senju who (aside from war) grow crops. It’s hard to classify it since the author didn’t pay it much attention but hi no kuni seems to be in large part some type of a tropical forest where it occasionally snows ?? so yeah i think when it got colder the Uchiha might’ve temporarily migrated to warmer another country. They’re kinda like birds. It’s also a never ending juxtaposition between the grounded nature of the Senju and free spiritedness of the Uchiha.
On the other hand we know Uchiha are considered one of four noble Konoha clans, and while we don’t really know what it means, we DO know that Senju are not one. I hc this as a category much older than the village, and think that noble clans are indeed just nobility that have are also shinobi clans. SO, keeping in mind that historically only nobility could even own land, imo regular shinobi clans are a whole new class in and of itself, that is placed either between nobility and peasants, or between peasants and the hinin (“the outcasts”, historical Japanese class) equivalent. Possibly depending on size and public opinion? And Senju are not nobles, so they’re a whole class beneath the Uchiha. Which just adds another layer to the politics of it all. Also the shinobi nobility and civilian nobility are two completely separate entities and each consider the other insane. Because I love court drama.
Essentially Uchiha more often get quests and such form upper class (daimyo, court aristocracy) members, so they’re paid more per assignment, and Senju get more quests but they’re paid significantly less + they do work on nobles farmland (can’t own their own land).
Once warring states hits they at some point get hired by two opposing sides and turns out hey. we’re both powerhouses. and now we hate each other. And so the cycle starts
Imo while I don’t think Uchiha were even just a civilian noble clan because of the Sharingan — to prevent eye theft, you need to protect yourself. That’s also why I think every single Uchiha is trained in combat (that’s why they have to pass the test to be qualified as adults, it’s to prove they can protect themselves and their eyes), and Senju have are split into two halves
To elaborate more on the Senju, I think at some point in history (possibly what marks the beginning of the warring states period?) the class of not-noble-shinobi was established, and allowed to formally own land (probably in exchange for something I haven’t thought of yet) and Senju were one of the firsts to do that, but they… I also consider them to be more… of a not-a-real-clan? We know that each of Senju characters in the series look very different, despite the other clans having all some characteristics in common. I think a lot of peasants who knew the skill to control their chakra claimed they were Senju and just moved to their land. And that’s why they have a wide genome pool, and also why my Senju are heirship-based (Uchiha are not) — because the clan head line is the only actually proven “Senju blood”. Nobody inside the clan talks about it, though there are rumors.

Someone comments on my Naruto posts and I activate like a fucking sleeper agent because why did I spend like half an hour typing a response and connecting dots I somehow laid down half a year ago. I’m not even into Naruto now. Why does my memory work like that

i think it'd be funny if using the hiraishin actually had massive consequences for tobirama but he just never mentions it.
izuna: remember that time you almost killed me with your insane jutsu that literally alters space and time? can't believe that has no negative side effects when my dojutsu my body's born to have is slowly making me blind and-
tobirama: i never said that. i said the side effects are mitigated by the necessity of the jutsu.
izuna: what side effects?
tobirama: i do see the shinigami whenever i use it and he looks increasingly angry.
izuna:
tobirama: also sometimes i vomit blood.

the naruto vs neji fight makes me laugh because:
naruto frames his win as a victory for “hard work” (as opposed to inborn talent) even though the only reason he turned the battle in his favour was due to his innate potent chakra reserves. neji may be a genius, but he also learned and mastered the hyuuga main house techniques through his own labour. neji is a closer representation of hard work than naruto will ever be (especially when it comes to this fight).
naruto goes “haven’t you considered HINATA is suffering too” after hearing about how neji’s dad died for the main house
realized how fucked up it was that neji refers to hinata with the suffix “sama.” the only others who receive that level of deference are the kages and the sannin.
naruto seems more outraged at neji for reacting negatively to what’s been done to him and his father than hiashi or the hyuuga clan in general (because he, too, is an orphan boy and he alone gets to dictate how every other orphan in the series behaves, apparently)
naruto immediately shelves the issue of the hyuuga clan to be revised after he rises to the position of hokage.
naruto says to neji “you can change your destiny.” myself and presumably all audience members assumed that meant neji would not die for a main house member exactly like his dad did.
and watching this fight for the first time i thought “great we’ll get development on all these fronts for naruto and neji and the hyuuga plotline later on” and isn’t that just hilarious

Absolutely wilding that Tobirama's take on ending war is "people should just stop having feelings." I mean, it is a very nine-year-old take but it's pretty clear he holds that stance close for the rest of his life (may not be great at following it, but holds the idea). I like the interpretations that have him semi-parenting his other siblings; we can see that he's already got the "just shut your mouth and do what needs to be done because nobody else is going to" philosophy of parentified kids down.
I mostly don't like the interpretations that stretch sensor types to basically empaths because I feel like it loses some of what makes the idea unique to Naruto (the active choice to sense, the limited nature of the ability). For Tobirama, though...it feels fitting to me that he'd have a hypersensitivity to aggression. Not reading feelings as a whole, but just aggression/violence.
It helps paper over a few inconsistencies regarding how good sensing is supposed to be, and for a kid that ended up playing promoted-parent, that's exactly the skillset you end up with--hypersensitivity to when things are about to go bad, because it's going to be your job to head that off at the pass. That trained hypersensitivity can also set you to jumping at shadows or making people think that you're looking for a fight, because, well...you are, in a sense. You never trust, you're always looking for how a situation is going to go bad and how you're going to get out in one piece.
Notice I didn't say win, I said get out. In the scene with Kawarama's grave, Tobirama lies to and appeases Butsuma even though his personal feelings are the opposite. His goal was not to prove the rightness of his philosophy, but to get Hashirama (and Itama) out of the funeral without further violence. Even for a shonen manga with bloodthirsty nine-year-olds, that's thinking a lot of steps ahead with a lot of subterfuge--and it's not even a canon-typical level of child insight, because Itama and Hashirama standing right there fail to defuse the scene.
In spite of running jokes about how dumb he is working up a lot of steam, Hashirama is not incapable of subterfuge or thinking ahead! He suspects Madara's identity from the first five minutes they meet, identifying Madara's stone-skipping as identical to shuriken-throwing. He recognizes this, recognizes that there would be negative consequences if he let on the truth about what he was seeing, and played dumb. And it worked. Hashirama absolutely had the skillset necessary to talk Butsuma down in the funeral scene and had already demonstrated skill with it.
Hashirama wanted to win against Butsuma; Tobirama wanted to survive.
And I think this behavior tracks neatly with his lifelong paranoia about Madara; even when it's sabotaging himself, he cannot stop fixating on how things can go wrong and how he can contain the damage.
