Do you have an opinion on CC's latest (long and very ugly) rant on Tumblr regarding the fandom? It'd be nice to hear all your thoughts on it.

OK I’ll answer this bc I have like 5 mssgs abt this. It’s prob not obvious anymore, but those who followed me early on know that I came from book fandom. I agree that some of the messages she gets, even long before the show, have been out of line. You do not @ people with slurs and misogynistic comments; this is common sense. If this was the sum total of her post, that would have been fine.

I do take issue with her misconception regarding exactly why fans have been drawing a line between the show’s version of malec and her version. It’s not about a silly ship war and she is welcome to claim the book version all she likes. But the criticisms about their portrayal in the books are valid, and this is why lgbt+ fans in particular don’t wish to lump the two versions together. Despite the show’s missteps in 2x07, they’ve been portrayed a lot better overall and it’s largely thanks to Michael Reisz, an openly gay man on the staff.

So it is frustrating to watch her claim things that she has not actually done for the relationship or the characters, especially when she is claiming to have done them by erasing a gay man. It’s interesting that she mentions Michael by name and says “men” to deliberately obfuscate that Reisz is not a straight man unlike the rest of the ones she named. Had this topic been about portrayal of women, then sure – but it’s not; this is specifically about the portrayal of mlm. Reisz is a part of the lgbt+ community; Clare is not, and to act as if he is just “a man” and thus invalid is not only disingenuous, it’s insulting. She doesn’t get ally points for simply having an lgbt+ relationship, and having problematic aspects like rampant biphobia. Neither does the show, for the record, which is why 2x07 got a lot of heat.

I equally take issue with her drawing a divide between the straight white men behind the series (again, ignoring Reisz and Y. Shireen, both executive producers) and herself just because she’s a woman. What white feminists like her do not understand is that to lgbt+ folks, to people of color, and especially to lgbt+ people of color, straight white women and straight white men are no different when it comes to our issues. Just because she belongs to one minority (women) doesn’t mean she gets to stand among lgbt+ and poc as if she knows our experience. She’s an ally just like the straight white men she derided are, nothing more.

Anyway, her rant overall was a mess; I’m haven’t even touched on her reducing Matt and Harry to “lol hot dudes”, especially Harry who has worked endlessly for Asian-American representation and who has always been careful to be a good ally by speaking respectfully about Magnus as a bisexual asian man, and has apologized where he has made missteps. Good allies who have a visible platform are hard to come by, especially for lgbt+ poc, so yes, despite being straight, Harry is still very important to the lgbt+ Asian community and it isn’t because he’s smoking hot.
