I think we all knew the new Lilo and Stitch was gonna be a soulless cash grab to get more settlers visiting Disney’s resort on occupied land but holy fuck.

Having an indigenous Hawaiian woman give up an indigenous Hawaiian child to the state, and then having said indigenous woman leave her homeland, is not lost on me. It is not lost on any indigenous person or anyone who knows indigenous history.

I am not falling for that shit when ICWA was almost overturned only a couple of years ago. I am not falling for that shit when native Hawaiians are leaving their homeland because they literally cannot afford to live there anymore thanks to settlers.

So back when I was a senior in undergrad, my partner went through, like, the craziest nervous breakdown I'd ever witnessed in my life. And like, maybe it makes me a back girlfriend or whatever but I was kind of like, "I'm gonna mind my own business on this one."

So my partner gets super close to two other students in his program. He was a film student so his senior year was being capped off by him making a movie. He decides he's going to make a movie about him turning into a salmon. He gets crazy into it. He starts eating salmon for every meal. He buys a bunch of salmon-related stuff. We found a T-shirt at Goodwill with a salmon on it and he thought it was divine intervention that he was doing the right thing. He walks into the freezing-cold Puget sound fully clothed several times to "get into it." He watches videos of salmon spawning and is like, "Nothing is more poignant than this." He gets a tattoo of three salmon on his arm.

The entire time the two students he got really close to are fully enabling him. It's a folie á trois sort of situation. They're out until six in the morning doing creepy art school shit and encouraging his (possibly no longer fictional) desire to become a salmon. My partner has an answer for everything. "Salmon get eaten by bears," I say. "That's a cool as fuck way to die," he says blithely. "And Salmon are free of the yoke of capitalism."

And if I dared to say, Hey, this is....getting a little odd..., he would throw a full-scale tantrum. I'm not supporting his dream (I wasn't sure at this point if it was his dream to be a filmmaker or his dream to become a salmon). I'm basically like, okay. Be a salmon! Fuck!

We had been dating for five years at this point and this behavior was such a left turn that I just decided to ignore it. And then after all that he basically went back to normal after graduation. Sometimes he'll be like, "That was weird, huh?" and has nothing more to say on the matter.

It’s so funny how people forget what certain dog breeds were bred for. A dachshund named Valerie has been marooned on a remote part of Kangaroo Island since she ran away from a campsite in 2023 and everyone in the comments was like “that is the last dog breed I would expect to survive on its own for 500 days”. Hmm. I don’t know if it’s just me and I’ve met absolute freak dachshunds my entire life but they’re tenacious little motherfuckers with an incredible prey drive. I’m more worried about the critically endangered endemic Kangaroo Island dunnart population than I am Valerie. No large predators, several species of small mammal, temperatures consistently between 55° and 75°? She’s the queen of the island now. All small marsupials quake at the sound of her footsteps.

Painting the things that speak to my soul

the "feminism check - comment positively on a flawed character" post going around is good, but also so many people are like "no she's NOT mean she's just MISUNDERSTOOD" and like, this is obviously nitpicking on a website that is generally far more progressive than society at large (and sometimes this is true of a character) but I don't love how many people's knee-jerk reaction to seeing a mean or flawed female character is to be like "actually there is NOTHING WRONG with her she is PERFECT AND GOOD." Like, personally, I am more interested in "no, she's an absolute rat-bastard of a woman, she's arrogant and mean, she would be an unpleasant person to deal with in real life, and also she's brilliant and correct." I don't love how many people jump to a flawed female character's defense with "no she is so KIND and GOOD and would be a GREAT MOM" or "she couldn't HELP IT she was CONTROLLED and she has NO AGENCY in this" and not "yeah, she is a terrible person but she is utterly captivating to watch and I cannot tear my eyes away from her crimes."

the whole point of a zine is that it's cheap to produce, amateur and homemade. if you're being asked to apply to participate in a print project, it is not a zine. if the final product is being printed and bound professionally, it is not a zine. if you are being asked to enter into any kind of licensing agreement more complex than "my work can be reproduced as part of this publication" it is not a zine. nine times put of ten if the final product costs more than $5 you have left zine country. im so serious about this.
