This makes gil's death all the more painful. I don't think he knew he was dying. The last thing he saw and imagined was Serge, tho he hallucinates Auguste. The way Gil looked at Serge as he imagined him (credit goes to @fuzzykazeki87 for pointing that out), that he genuinely had feelings for Serge, and that Serge saw a part of him in Gil and associated with him, and i think it is reciprocated. Oh i wish Takemiya didn't end it like that but it's her story. All we can do is read it and cry 😭 or make fanfics where both of them are alive, or come out with alternate endings.
